GPD G5A DPAD Problem
« on: March 23, 2014, 12:45:17 am »
I have a problem with the D-pad of my GPD G5A.  When I press the left, right, and up directions, they work fine.  When I press the down direction, it (like a game character, for example) doesn't go straight down.  It randomly goes down-left or down-right.  It can be difficult to play games with this problem.  I have the same problem in the main interface of the G5A, so the problem does not lie in the key mapping.  I believe most G5As have d-pads that work just fine.  It is just mine that doesn't want to work correctly.  I have opened the G5A, so the warranty is void.  Here is a YouTube video that shows the problem I am having.

http://youtu.be/0-AnCxLlQCM

I bought the G5A from Willgoo.  They have been great and have answered my questions to the best of their ability.  They said they have seen this issue before.  They said to fix the issue, one must separate the down from the left and right.  This is in relation to the hardware.  So the circuit board, plastic insert under the d-pad, or the d-pad itself must be adjusted in some way.  I asked for clarification, but they couldn't describe it any better.

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem, and what would be a good fix?

Send it back to Willgoo and ask for a replacement?

I opened the G5A.  The warranty is void.  So I can't send it back for a replacement.  Before I opened it, I asked Willgoo if they wanted to repair or replace the device.  They said they wanted to repair it and the cost would have to be shared.  I didn't want to have to spend the money to ship it to them and repair the device.  Instead, I chose to open the G5A and see if I could see any obvious repair I could make to get the d-pad to work properly.  There was nothing obvious to be done.

Did you get a good look at the dpad membrane? My guess is something is causing the left/right contacts to touch when you press down. I have a ygpd16 that had a membrane defect out of the box that made the Y button random. I added a little bit of foam to fix, cost nothing and works great. Hopefully all you need to do is a simple mod to the dpad/membrane/contacts.

Ygpd16 button fix:

I have this problem too. It's a faulty d-pad that is not correctly molded. Mine has issues with right up and right down. I looked at the plastic d-pad and beneath it are four crossed plastic bars that push the membranes. One of them is slightly lower than the others. I've put some glue on it so it has the same levels as the others. Now it works fine.

The dpad membrane on my g5a  was slightly oversized and had been caught under the two bottom screws of the dpad pcb so it was not correctly seated. You can tell this as the membrane was scuffed on the two edges where the pcb fixes to the housing. I very slightly trimmed the membrane so it missed the fixing points and reassembled. So far working well. ;D

I've just received mine from Geekbuying and I've a similar problem:
- Right button works fine
- Up button is hard to press. Most times press is not detect
- Down button also launchs right press 95% of times I press it. Same to up button (when I'm able to press it)
- Right button generates up or down randomly

I've just sent an email to Geekbuying with a video showing this issue.

I think there is almost no aftersale service :)

I had a similar problem with one of the shoulder buttons which did not have contact and the email correspondence was like real-life comedy...

The English is hard to understand, they do not know their products (tehy ask me for a photo to indicate the button) and their answers are pointless - they told me I did not map the buttons correctly...Well, if I could map that button that do not have contact...

Fortunately the GPD is good for repairs, and I was able to fix it myself. But you have to take the risk, you are completely left alone - and my device was just 2 weeks old...

However, writing them will let you enjoy some nice emails from Weenie or Anna, starting with "Hi there", "Hi dear" and they are written in purple or pink... (No, I am not joking...)

One week from my first email and still no answer... Awesome

My english is really bad. I think I'll not enjoy these funny emails.

These days Geekbuying conducted an Easter promotion where everyone could get a $5 (off a $100 purchase) discount code easily.

It's always a hit ot miss with these products. My JXD S7300 had the same d-pad problem and so has my GPD-G5A. The fastest way to fix this is to take matters in your own (or other nearby) hand and open the device to fix this (mostly) tiny issue.

I wish the sellers got some spare parts for the device though.

I'm pretty sure that I will have to fix it myself, but after a week and 4 emails on my part I think an answer is a minimal requirement for a "reliable vendor" support department.

Geekbuying is very responsive when you want to buy. It seems they have become deaf when they received the money   :-X

I've Geekbuying response. They offered me two alternatives:
1) Send console to repair. They estimate that the process will take two months. I'm waiting confirmation about shipping cost
2) Don't send console to repair. Geekbuying offered me 7.5$ as compensation

They refused to send me a replacement for the defective dpad.
