GPD G58 Very initial impressions
« on: May 15, 2014, 08:47:46 am »

Hi, this is not a review at all, just very initial impressions of this device, specially comparing it with 5110B, which is the more similar device to this.

FEELING:
As you can see in the picture, device is very similar to 5110B, but there are some differences. The first I noticed is that device is very light, 5110B is much heavier in weight.
The DPAD is not the same as 5110B. It's a 2-piece DPAD which reminds me to the first 5110.
Screen is a TFT panel 800x480, quite similar to the ones of g5a or 5110B. So, don't expect wonderful view angles.

CONTROLS:

As I say, device use a 2-piece DPAD. The first thing I thought was that it would be difficult to handle. However, I inmediately played SF 3 and KOF games and I can make special moves without issues, so in this sense I have no complaints. A one piece DPAD would have been better though.
Analogs are different story. I have heard some people that have problems with left analog stuck. In my sample unit this does not happen, but analogs are not very good in any case. Are completely similar to the ones of 5110B, so not very precise. After using G5A, I find quite difficult to play with these analogs, to be honest.
Buttons feeling is ok except for L an R which a are bit hard, exactly like the ones of 5110B.

SOFTWARE AND PERFORMANCE

Device comes with Android 4.4.2 (kitkat). Firmware has a very similar structure to a Legacy ROM so it's pretty stable.
It comes rooted and with some prebuilt emulators and apps that I suggest uninstalling and downloading them from google play store.
Device is a RK3188-T, so clocked at 1,4 ghz max. I will see If I am able to overclock it. In any case, performance is good, similar to devices like G5A. Screen rate is 60 hz and device has proper joystick driver, so no problem so far. Tincore keymapper works nice with the device too.
About battery time is hard to tell yet. It went from 100 to 80 in a hour running games, so I suppose it will be similar to G5a, about 4 hours or so max, but it's too soon to tell.

If someone wants me to test anything (except paid games from google play store xD), let me know and I'll try to find some time to run something.

Sounds like it's a pretty good device. I have ordered one, too. Convienient size if you don't want to lug around a g5a.

I've been waiting for a first impressions thing like this thank you! I'm debating between this and the JXDS5800 but it seems like this is better because better performance and better hardware. The only thing tempting about the S5800 is the L2, R2 buttons and the analogs.

BUT to be honest if the analogs on this are like the one on the PSP thats not all that bad really. Sure PS Vita analogs would be great but PSP analog isn't all that bad.

PSP analogs are better than g58 analogs. I personally don't suggest g58 if your main use is analogs. For good analogs you have the G5A to be honest.

LOL its a double uncertainty. With GPD G58 analogs are not the best and JXD S5800 great analogs but HORRIBLE DPAD apparently lol its like one can't get good portability and style in one machine lol jk. I think I might still go for the GPD G58 because most going to use DPAD mostly and right analog to use to substitute L2 and R2 (like I used to on my psp, left=L2 right=R2 lol). Only would use left analog for N64 games that require it in fact I realize I can always switch and make the dpad the joystick and the actually left analog the dpad in n64 games.

Did anyone tried if 64GB microSD works with G58?

Yep, I am using a 64 GB Sandisk. Must be formatted to fat32 before using it.

Great I was wondering that too. Just looked this up does anyone know if FPSE or ePSXe (preferably FPSE) supports dual analog (like I could map buttons to the right analog stick like L2=Left and R2=Right).

Right analog use Axis values. Not sure if FPSE or ePSXe support an axis value for L2 and r2. Most probably you'll need to use Tincore to convert right analog to standard keys and then map the emulator. I don't think it's too confortable to map a l2 or r2 in a second analog though.

Hmm True maybe L1, R1 then lol. Its what I do on my PS Vita. Hmm if the tin core thing isn't too hard maybe I'll do that then. I'll look up and see if FPSE and ePSXe support it natively though.

I subscribe Skelton impressions. L2 and R2 can be remapped although they are not in a very comfortable position.

Do you feel like the G58's build quality is worse than the JXD S5110b's build quality? You mentioned that it is much lighter, does that make it feel cheaper as a result?
Ordered one of those fancy GPD G58 devices. Review soon.

They are similar. It's lighter, but I don't know why. I suppose Rockchip board is lighter than anlogic one.

I paid custom charges ?4.50, so it's make total cost with delivery of ~?61 - not bad at all! My first impresion is good but this is my first android console so far, so can't compare to enything. I'm very new this and looking for advice. Any recomendation for must have emulators? I already buy PPSSPP, but not sure for rest of emulators. Any advise what place is best for game roms?

Take a look at that post for emulators:

I agree with the post almost a hundred percent.

I got my G58 on friday and have been very happy with playing around with it. The screen is not amazing, but other than that it's been good. I've been mostly playing reicast and PPSSPP games and it works nicely.

I tried UAE4all-SDL today and it's really difficult to set up with the controller.

I can see my two drives in the pc without problems. Did windows install you some drivers? Because it should have installed drivers automatically.
