This has to be one of the strangest devices I've ever seen. But still not as strange as this person's thumbs. I can't stop looking at them.

Thanks Eragon, I was afraid you'll say that. I'll have to wait till July 10th - I hope the code will last ... Yes, I use PP, too.

Rotate, because that always happens and my afchos gamepad 2 was useless after that started happening because it also caused huge drift in the left stick - controlling the ui :-( wont happen om q9 and you get used to it quickly...
But these are true joystics anyway, like on the vita, not nubs :-)

Hmm, it looks like the release date has changed. Now it says 31st of July.

Hopefully, it doesn't mean there are too many problems with the device itself upon release.

Hello everyone!

I'm quite interested to get the GPD XD, was previously debating with myself whether to get the JXD 5800b or the Nvidia Shield Portable...but the appearance of this has thrown the other 2 contenders out (for me).

However, without a review, i'm not very sure...some odd pictures here and there somehow doesn't cut it for me. Hope the manufacturer will do more to entice people to get it.

I'll assure you right now - the nVidia Shield Portable is better.
It has the best ergonomics (basically and XBox 360 controller), best screen (1080p 5'') and the most powerful SoC of the three. Plus, it's naturally compatible with TegraZone games.
Its only fault is that it's bulky as fuck.

Its 720 p right? And cpu is a15 (<a17 in xd) and gpu about equally fast but mali 760 newer/more features (opengl es 3.0, opencl)

Shield has a much larger battery tough :-)

@geekbuying, why has presell lead time changed from 07-19 to 07-31? This only for new orders or is it being delayed?

You're correct about it being 720p, I just remembered it was HD.
And A15/A17 doesn't really matter. The fact is that the drivers nVidia publishes trump everything else on the market, and they can even offload some of the CPU tasks to the GPU.
For instance, Mali760 doesn't support Google Cardboard, because the shaders it uses aren't incorporated correctly.
As to OpenGL ES, I know of only one app which uses the 3.0 spec and doesn't need TegraZone, and it's the Dolphin emulator. It won't run properly even if you have a compatible SoC, so you shouldn't even bother right now.

nVidia Shield Portable will probably be overtaken as the best handheld console (or at least the one with the best SoC) in the next year, but currently it's still the best.

Hm on other hand, all the quake games can only do msaa on non-tegra gpus , just to name something...

And there is the much-imporved version of the saturn emuator yabause which does run full speed with compatible games (at least plyable) and it needs opengl 3.0 . also riptide pg 2 and their other games offer better graphics on opengl 3.0 gpus.

So i think they are on par , depends on which game you're playing which one has an edge. :-)

And mali-760 supports gpu compute so it can do certain cpu tasks too AFAIK

Yes the shield portable is ridiculously bulky, don't fancy that. I'm kind of drawn into the XD's svelte form factor.

Not sure if this has been discussed before, I'm only interested to play PPSSPP, psp games with perhaps 2x rendering switch on (remove jaggies). And all the old school GBA, GB, SNES, NES etc.

I'm hoping that future software optimizations will make most games run smoothly.

And Nvidia is coy about the supposed successor to the Portable. Resellers are setting the price of the Portable to a unrealistic level, don't think casual buyers will bite.

That's where the XD comes in, I'd guess.

The shield is a great device, but the problem is the price. Nvidia didn't care about european people, so getting one in my country is incredibly expensive (300 EUR or so), which is much more expensive than the price it was sold in US. So, if Nvidia doesn't care about europeans, I won't care about Nvidia. I can understand that a chinese company don't sell a device directly in Europe, but Nvidia is a huge company with lot of resources, and there is no excuse for them.
