Best settings for EPSXE?
« on: February 03, 2016, 05:59:30 pm »
EPSXE is the best PSX emulator imo. Love it.
But I would like to know what the best settings are for the GPD XD.
Of course every game is different. One game is more demanding than the other.

I'm using hardware for graphics with 1x resolution.
2x resolution is far better, looks awesome but a lot of games have fps drops.

My CPU governor is set to interactive.

What settings do you use? What can I improve?
All tips are welcome. :)

hey. Personally, I don't mess around with many settings for this particular emulator. With so many to choose from, you COULD end up harming rather than helping fps during gameplay, etc.

I've mainly just experimented with the ps3 controller scheme... 'mode' setting I set to the R3 button... that allows the ability to switch from analog to digital n vice versa.

My settings:
Video Renderer: Hardware
Internal Resolution: 2x
Video Filtering: Enabled
HW/Soft Threading Mode: 2-Threads
PSX Dithering: Enabled
Sound Quality: Full sound effects
Sound Latency: Low

With this settings I have rarely framedrops or it is manageable.
Image quality over fps! =P

The only thing I want in ePSXe Android is a aspect ratio-mode for PAL games with removed PSX bands.

If you use 2x resolution use performance governor instead of interactive, though even with performance you'll have some fps drops in some games. I personally just use fxAA mode (or something like that is called if I remmeber well)

Other choice is using pcsx core from retroarch with Enhanced resolution set to ON and together with some shaders like scale2HQ and some games look very good, mainly 2d games.

Thanks guys!
Appreciate the replies.

When I have 2x internal resolution Dead Or Alive is not "playable".
FPS drops to 30 - 40 and everything is really slow...

I will tweak some more. :)

This is my 3 main setup.

[My default setting]
Internal Resolution: 1x FXAA
Video Filtering: Enabled
HW/Soft Threading Mode: 2-Threads
PSX Dithering: Enabled
-Accurate + Perfomance. A bit smudgy, but still looks great. No framerate drop.

[2D sprite games]
Internal Resolution: 1x
Video Filtering: Disanabled
-Maintain a sharp sprite

[3D action games]
GPU Plugin: v15
Subpixel Precision: Enable
Reduce Internal resolution: 480p
Texture Mode: Auto Detect
Threading Mode: 2-Threds/None
-Missing effects, but unnoticable in some games.

Usually, I will tweak a bit more in each games and save the "game setting" individually. I rarely use 2x resolution as the game already looks fine on 5" screen.

Dead or alive (and most 3d fighting games) works great on GPU plugins btw.

Since the 2x resolution is available I cannot change to 1x because it is a difference like dvd to blu ray =P
I played Silent Hill with 2x and I had really rarely framdrops for a second. The rest of the game I had 60 fps.

Acceptable.

Yeah, Silent Hill best setting is 2x, while it's look fantastic in OGL but I think..some effects are missing. Unfortunetly, 2x only works fine on non-graphically demanding / effects heavily games.

Sorry for misleading, I'm talking about OGL Plugin.

The only missing effect on I noticed at the moement is "Montion Blur" effects after the first FMV at the start of th game. When Harry is running in the black brackground.

This ony happend using OGL plugin as it usually missing "transitional screen" effect when you try to leave/enter the new area. It's not a big deal but I'm a fussy person.

Hardware renderer seems to be the best choice for accuration. I wish all the games would run well on atleast 2x but I will have to stick with 1x for now.

Using hardware or OpenGL plugin I can't get Soul Blade to work ok.
FPS drops to 10 FPS in the menu's. Actual gameplay is ok...

I use both epsxe and pcsxr/retroarch regularly, and I now prefer pcsxr. main thing I liked about the pcsxr core was that when I set my screen to 60hz, you can see the difference in smoothness panning side to side, compared to epsxe where it stutters. and that's with 2x scale also.

What would everyone say the best settings would be to make it look as close as possible to the actual PS1 graphics? I sometimes get weird shadow type squares when PSX dithering is enabled. Should that be turned off or left on?
