[ROM] LegacyROM 1.5 GPD-g7 Kitkat
« on: August 21, 2014, 05:41:10 pm »

I don't have a working g7 anymore, so don't ask me for updates, because there won't be updates by me unless I can get another device.

INTRODUCTION:

The purpose of this firmware  is to provide a firmware just with the essential apps and tools needed for gaming, with no bloatware applications. It also includes several fixes to make system more stable and usable.

FEATURES:

 Rooted with superSU
 Google Play full compatibility (device spoofed as Samsung Galaxy S3)
 Init.d support for manual scripts (you can add scripts that you want to be run in init)
 Stock AOSP launcher
 No bloatware or chinese applications. Only apps added are Tincore Keymapper, Tincore Quickflasher, and CIFS Manager. They are all installed in userspace area so they can be removed easily in case you don't like them. You will need to install your own emulators from google play store.
 Stock mapper is compatible now. Tincore keymapper is also include if you need advanced features.
 Compiled using AOSP and latest RKSDK patches in the framework
 Oveclocked kernel to 1,6 ghz as optional patch (see above for further instructions)
 New kernel compiled from scratch with following features:
- Joystick driver changes. Renamed to G7-GAMEPAD and solving some minor issues with a couple of games.
 Vsync video playback fixed: Video playback is smooth now.
 CIFS/NFS support
 Mali, HDMI, wifi new drivers
ABOUT TINCORE KEYMAPPER:

This tool is used for remapping or increased compatibility from gamepad.

ABOUT TINCORE QUICKFLASHER:

This tool is used to flash kernels or other system modifications
without PC or recovery.

Play store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tincore.and.quickflasher

INSTALLATION:

In order to install the firmware you need RK Batch Tool in your PC included in the rar package.

 Open Batch tool and select the Legacy_XX image file (.img).
 With GPD power off, just connect it via USB Cable to PC. Then just press and Hold Volume + button and Press Power. RK Batch Tool will detect device, and you'll see the number 1 with a green box. If you see with a pink box, just select Switch Button until you see it in green. If the system ask you for some drivers, then just use the one included in the Batch Tool (or using driverInstaller package to install rockchip USB drivers).
 Once device is detected with a green BOX, just select Restore and wait patiently while firmware is written.
 Device will auto reboot to recovery and format your partitions. Just wait patiently until all process is done, since it's a long process and first boot can take several minutes, so just wait until it finishes and you see the home Android launcher.

PATCHES:

We have included several patches in the rar than can be flashed via Quickflasher. Just copy them to mnt/sdcard/quickflasher. Patches are the following:

 Kernel Overclocked: Is the kernel included in the rom but overclocked to 1,6 ghz
 Kernel_standard: The kernel that comes by default with this firmware, in case you need to re-install it.

You can check this video to see how to install a kernel or patch by using Quickflasher.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIyxwX7BnYo" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIyxwX7BnYo</a>

GENERAL TIPS and CONSIDERATIONS:

 Default CPU governor (interactive) and I/O Scheduler are pretty conservative. For very demanding applications like PPSSPP or Reicast I suggest using ondemand CPU governor and deadline I/O scheduler. You can control this by using a CPU app like SETCPU, NoFrillsCPU, CPU tuner, etc...
 If something (an app or game) is not working, send me a logcat to see what's going on. All complaints just saying ?This app game doesn't work? without a logcat will be ignored. And of course apps should be legally obtained. If your get an game or app from unofficial sources and does not work, then buy it and try again.

 If you want to make your microSD as primary sdcard, just go to settings/storage and select micro SD as primary sdcard. This will swap internal and external memory. Then power off and next boot memories will be swapped.

THANKS:

 To GPD for their support and collaboration.

0ne - thank you!
Two - Is it just me, or is there NO blue-tinge to the screen, now? Blacks seem REALLY black. How the heck did you do that?

Thank you Skelton.
Although I was wondering, is there is a way to select what mapper is selected by the onscreen button?

Perhaps are the new graphic libraries. But I have never seen the blue tint some people mention in my screen, so I don't know.

Bedbug1226, that requires full compilation. If I assign tincore to the gamepad button, then we lose stock mapper. If you don't want stock mapper then perhaps it's better don't update, since this update was made for those that required me stock mapper in the build.

That's my idea. Since the source is the same, but for g5A I have to make some changes to kernel yet to make it compatible with stock mapper.

Great ROM.  Great kernel.  Really stable and smooth.  Thank you for sharing your hard work.

How do we buy specific people a beer around here?  The donate page seems to be for Dingoonity in general.  Sorry, I'm very new to emulation, to the community etc.

Thanks.

Don't worry, no need to donate anything.

BTW, bad news. My g7 is dead. My nephew was playing and it fell to the ground and now is a complete bunch of pieces, screen broken, etc etc... so that means my end in g7 development, sorry. (it was going to be probably the end anyway)

Don't let small chldren to play with this stuff because this can happen xDD

I have added a wrist-strap to my g5a to hopefully prevent a similar catastrophe.  I took a wiimote wrist strap off of a wii controller (because it is white so it matches the g5a and has the tightening clasp) drilled a tiny hole in the side of the g5a right next to one of the screw posts, took the back off of the g5a, put the cord around the screw post to anchor it, and put it back together.  It seems to work well for me.

That's terrible. Well, can I just say thanks very much again for this ROM. We are very lucky to have the benefit of your brains and hard work.

Is the kernel the main reason for it's improved performance?

Truly bad news, Skelton. At least thanks for all your effort and time you worked with these wonderful roms for the GPD devices, even after your retirement. Everyone here is in debt with you.

Just a silly joke: Please, do not let your nephew play with your G5A. :B

Wow - I thought Skelton had retired from GPD devices (and all devices?) so we would never see this happen, but I'm quite glad that he decided to come back for at least one more rom!

Skelton - as a way of saying "thanks" for all your hard work for us as a community would you like me to repair your GPD?  I have a ton of experience pulling the G7 apart and reassembling it (I've literally stripped my entire G7 down and rebuilt it multiple times) so I could probably resurrect it for you.  The shattered screen would need to be replaced, but I could probably take care of that for you, you've done so much for us, it's the least I could do - they're not that expensive anyway, the panels in these devices is around $20 on Alibaba (I should know, I was trying to source an IPS replacement for the longest time but I could never find one that was pin-compatible)

If you aren't interested in having your G7 repaired, would you be interested in selling it for parts?  I'm trying to get a replacement d-pad for my G7, but GPD wants a *crazy* amount of money for that tiny piece of plastic, so if you haven't yet thrown away your G7 let me know and I might be willing to take some or all of it off your hands to help you recoup your loss there!

Thanks!

Thanks for the offering, but device is completely screwed. I will probably keep the parts because  they can be used in g5a (not sure about battery though). I will remove the board and compile new kernel to use it as a TVBOX, so at least can be used somehow. I only used G7 for development and testing, so not a big loss for me anyway.

About my retirement, I consider myself retired but if Rockchip release new SDK (like android 4.4.4 or L or something) I will try to update at least the GPD devices I have. (except g7)

Just gonna piggyback a question on this one, how exactly do you go about these custom roms? Is the process anywhere near simular to building Cyanogenmod?
