[ROM] LegacyROM 1.1 for GPD-G5a Kitkat (Android 4.4.2)
« on: February 25, 2014, 07:43:25 am »
NEW VERSION 1.1

Changelog:

Updated Mali, gralloc and hwcomposer to make it more "kitkat friendly"
CIFS/NFS support
New kernel (standard and Overclock 1,6 ghz)
some minor updates for system and kernel to make device smoother.

Everything else like 1.0

You don't need to have installed 1.0 in order to update, you can flash this firm directly, no matter the firm you come from (instructions at the bottom).

We'll make more changes when Tincore has a working screen for his device again.

Download 1.1:

INTRODUCTION:

The purpose of this firmware provided by Skelton and Tincore is to provide a firmware just with the essential apps and tools needed for gaming, with no bloatware applications. It also includes several fixes to make system more stable and usable.

FEATURES:

   Rooted.
   Google Play full compatibility (device spoofed as Samsung Galaxy S3)
   Init.d support for manual scripts (you can add scripts that you want to be run in init)
   Stock launcher replaced by apex Launcher (stock launcher has some bugs)
   No bloatware or chinese applications. Only apps added are Tincore Keymapper, Tincore Quickflasher,  and Total Commander. They are all installed in userspace area so they can be removed easily in case you don't like them. You will need to install your own emulators from google play store.
   No GPD stock mapper, replaced by Tincore Keymapper. You can invoke Tincore using gamepad icon at system bar like in stock mapper. If you are a lover of stock mapper, then this firmware is not for you.
   Added reboot option to power system menu.
   Oveclocked kernel to 1,6 ghz as optional patch (see above for further instructions)
   New kernel compiled from scratch with following features:
- New joystick driver written by Tincore, much faster and much more responsive than stock driver. Full analog ranges and following Android standard for gamepads. Analogs are much more responsive and there is no input lag at all.
   Vsync video playback fixed: Video playback is smooth now.

ABOUT TINCORE KEYMAPPER:

This tool is used for remapping or increased compatibility from gamepad.

ABOUT TINCORE QUICKFLASHER:

This tool is used to flash kernels or other system modifications
without PC or recovery.

Play store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tincore.and.quickflasher

INSTALLATION:

In order to install the firmware you need RK Batch Tool in your PC included in the rar package.

   Open Batch tool and select the Legacy_XX image file (.img).
   With GPD power off, just connect it via USB Cable to PC. Wait until battery charging animation dissappears. Then just press and Hold Volume + button and Press Power. RK Batch Tool will detect device, and you'll see the number 1 with a green box. If you see with a pink box, just select Switch Button until you see it in green. If the system ask you for some drivers, then just use the one included in the Batch Tool (or using driverInstaller package to install rockchip USB drivers).
   Once device is detected with a green BOX, just select Restore and wait patiently while firmware is written.
   Device will auto reboot to recovery and format your partitions. Just wait patiently until all process is done, since it's a long process and first boot can take several minutes, so just wait until it finishes and you see the home Android launcher.

PATCHES:

We have included several patches in the rar than can be flashed via Quickflasher. Just copy them to mnt/sdcard/quickflasher. Patches are the following:

   Kernel Overclocked: Is the kernel included in the rom but overclocked to 1,6 ghz
   Kernel_standard: The kernel that comes by default with this firmware, in case you need to re-install it.

You can check this video to see how to install a kernel or patch by using Quickflasher.

KNOWN BUGS:

- Dead Trigger 2 shows graphics incorrectly, so the game is unplayable.
- sometimes, after a full charge, you may experience a slight screen flicker with max brightness. Just move brightness slier or enter an app and should be fine.
- There could be some bug here and there, android 4.4.2 in RK is rather new and is constantly changing to be improved, so let me know your findings.

GENERAL TIPS and CONSIDERATIONS:

   Default CPU governor (interactive) and I/O Scheduler are pretty conservative. For very demanding applications like PPSSPP or Reicast I suggest using ondemand CPU governor and deadline I/O scheduler. You can control this by using a CPU app like SETCPU, NoFrillsCPU, CPU tuner, etc...
   If something (an app or game) is not working, send me a logcat to see what's going on. All complaints just saying ?This app game doesn't work? without a logcat will be ignored. And of course apps should be legally obtained. If your get an game or app from unofficial sources and does not work, then buy it and try again.

   If you want to make your microSD as primary sdcard, just go to settings/storage and select external SD as primary sdcard. This will swap internal and external memory. Then power off and next boot memories will be swapped.

THANKS:

   To GPD for their support and collaboration with the communtiy.

Is it as good as the Jelly Bean LegacyROM? while I don't have a lot on my GPD so I was thinking of upgrading, what you think Skelton?

Thank you skelton. I have not yet a GPD device, but I'm more confident to buy one.

I've just realised you have GPD link in your signature. Are you some kind of official developer/agent?

Ruffnutts, it works ok for me. But it's difficult for me to decide. My advice is always the same: if someone is happy with their current firmware, probably no need to update. 4.2.2 is very good, and 4.4.2 still needs some improvements by rockchip people. But I just decided to make that one for those that love flashing an trying different alternatives.

Kerheol: No, I am not agent or whatever of GPD, it's just a way to say thanks to them because they are being very collaborative with me in terms of support and tools to make a firmware. In fact they are including my changes in their stock firmwares little by little. If other companies want to be so collaborative like this one (JXD??), would be nice for me.

Could we have a dual boot so we can choose which to boot or even use a rom manager for switching roms?
This would be cool, what do you think?

I wish I could, but both JB and kitkat use different bootloader, so I am afraid is not possible. Bootloader from RK is close though too :S

Nop,e rom manager is for ZIP file based roms. Rockchip are full img files, that need to be installed using BatchTool with restore option.

Rom updated to 1.1, check first post.

Before someone ask me which one is better (JB or Kitkat), I have no answer for that. I could not choose between my son and my daughter xD. Both are fine for me.

I think that 4.4 is better. Only issue could be if some apps do not work.

Rom updated to 1.1, check first post.
Skelton, are you sure? I've downloaded the file from the link, but it's named "1.0". And when I opened it next to 1.0 version of your rom in WinRAR, both images shows me same CRC32 and date of changes.

Just the link after the changelog.

Edit: I just checked download and it's fine, it's the 1.1 version. Be sure you have downloaded the correct one.

CWM does not work ok in Kitkat, have some issues restoring backups, so I am afraid no. That's why it's not included.

Hi Skeleton,

I read between the lines that you recommended the 4.2.2., also you softened your recommendation later. Latest since yesterday with the 1.1.1 from GPD I am unable to keep pace with this fast development. Could you say something (maybe in a new thread) about the differences?

Btw: I still do not have my decive, but that will hopefully change soon...

Latest stock is just a minor update. So, they still use stock driver (which have some problems), bad google play compatiblity, no overclock possibilty or no vsync fix for videos. In my opinion, it's better to use LegacyROM unless you like stock gpd mapper.

4.2.2 or 4.4.2 is fine. Difficult for me to decide between the two.

By the way, I don't update as fast as GPD because I don't have time enough, and because there is no reason to update frequently in my opinion. System is good as it is with both legacy. So, it will be some time until my next update (if there is an update at all). So please understand, it's 4 roms to maintain, and the fact that I am not getting almost any feedback on them makes me think people are not so interested in firmwares, or system is just good as it is. So, less work for me I guess.

Thanks For the quick reply i have flashed the "iFive X2 Android 4.4.2 CWM Recovery by ManuPC" via ArcTools and it appears to work fine but i will test more.

Edit i have successfully created and restored a backup with this recovery on the stock kitkat V1.1.1 firmware. The only errors i get in CWM are at reboot system:
Disable Flash recovery
Fix Root
I ignore these and it still works.I have also noticed that reboot into recovery works from ArcTools but not always from QuickBoot.
