Good x86 Dev Board
« on: February 01, 2018, 05:25:08 am »
I'm looking for a good, inexpensive x86/AMD64 development board.  Something very small with USB, HDMI, EMMC, SD Card Slot and Wifi.  I'm currently building an arcade bartop with an older ODroid-U3 board and am just considering upgrading.  Just considering options right now.  Would prefer to keep it under $100.  Also looking into newer ARM based boards.

I was looking at some of the NUC boxes.  It's an option.  Also, if I go over budget a little, I may be able to do an older AMD MiniATX board and CPU.  I may have the room in the back of the cabinet but will have to make some modifications.

I think I may just get everything going on the ODroid for now and consider upgrading a bit later.

I have been considering using something like these and just using the guts:

I think the board will fit if I mount it to the back cover of the machine.

If you doing that you could use a laptop too with those same processors and prices. Might even be able to use the laptop screen depending on how you do it. I searched ebay for AMD A4

I have a 13" LCD panel and driver board already.  It may have some big bezels due to the cabinet dimensions though, so I'm considering finding a 17" LCD.  If I can find a cheap 17" laptop, it may be a consideration.

For this price you could have just small cheap and slow board with atom.. without case, or could buy bigger that much faster complete old PC, often with Windows lincence.

If you want something new, small with case and not slow, it will cost twice as much.

I've got the cabinet parts in -- had them built pretty cheap actually -- and can actually fit an ATX board in the base, if I need.  So, I may go standard sized motherboard and AMD for a cheap solution.

Intel Atom z3735f 1gb RAM linux compute sticks are 35 dollars on amazon, but it only has 1 USB for input and a micro for charging. It does support bluetooth and wifi though. I have two, VERY good after you install the xfce desktop or even better use the linuxium OS respin on it.
