Hi!

I've been trying to reflash my GCW, but I keep getting an error.
It starts flashing, and gets to a part that says:

filename=/usr/share/od-rescue-cd/images/system.bin, addr-0x01000000, check=0
bus 005 dev 005: pid 4770
last_block_len 512
block_nums 144790
last_download_block_num 480
download_times 142 :

after that, it goes red and says "ERROR! Flashing failed!"

Anyone know what could be wrong, and how I could fix this?

Try with a different cable and/or a different PC, the software on the disc has problems with some USB adapters.

I've tried different computers, different cables, burned the disc aswell as convert it to a bootable usb, but it always fails at the same spot, over and over.

What firmware version are you running right now? Maybe your trying to flash the newest version of the os over an older build which might be causing the issue?

As a last resort due to possible problems with breaking wires and such, maybe try taking out the micro sd card from the zero and formatting it through windows first then putting it back in the zero and re-flashing it?

I think that when you flash a GCW Zero the previous firmware installed is irrelevant.

PS. @ Dr. Tails: obviously you remembered to start the device in USB boot mode (select+hold powerslider up), am I right?

Probably a new release of the Rescue CD that contains the latest firmware will be very useful.
Practically is the best and faster way to recover the GCW.

For those who are struggling to create a mac bootable USB rescue disk on mac os X, I used the instructions here (from step 3 onwards):
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx

Other methods tried and failed on my machine (15-in Macbook Pro 2012, OSX Yosemite):

  • unetbootin: currently, the mac version of unetbootin cannot create mac bootable usb linux disks
  • disk utility: failed to restore iso to usb volume
  • dd iso: disk was unreadable

If the gcw-zero.com website is down, you can use this mirror of the ISO I've hosted:

Download (70MB):    https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5tSn03yRsHvNDF4clZfRHp1M28

If you want to verify integrity before use:

Yes, it will work. You don't need to format the memory card. The CD-rom will flash a basic filesystem to the SD card, which will expand to the full capacity of the card at the first boot (which will take a bit longer than usual).

Thanks what if I was to use the rescue CD and put the target firmware in a USB card reader instead of the GCW internal just to flash to a new card and put it back in when done will this work? And last question can we use the rescue CD on a CD or DVD and will they work with Windows 10? Thanks for all the help.

I am having problems I tried to flash a 64 GB card and a 128gb card they both said it flashed successful when I boot the cards only a blank screen no boot I did full flash on retail GCW on blank new memory cards am i doing something wrong? When I put my original 16gb card back in boots just fine any help would be appreciated thanks.

Update fixed i was not pressing the spacebar to select the flash option duh. All sorted swapped out 16gb card for 128gb sandisk booting great so now we know 128 gb internal card works ;)

I would get a flashing yellow screen anytime I connected to power.  I thought my proto was DEAD! I was simply looking through the forum and found this gem.  Tried this recovery disk and it worked!  Im SO happy!  Thank you for creating this.  Unfortunately, I had to do the FULL flash.  Its been years since Ive used my Zero and now I gotta brush up on the basics, like installing stuff!

Great to hear all went well. You potentially have to install both the 2014-05-05 update and finally the 2014-08-20 update from the GCW Zero website to avoid incompatibility with recent applications hosted at the downloads page. The Rescue Disco does not include the games which were originally pre-installed on the device. You will have to re-download them manually.
