OpenDingux Rescue Disc v0.3

OpenDingux Rescue Disc v0.3

This CD-Rom can be used to reflash a GCW-Zero through USB, from any computer with a CD-Rom drive.

How to:
- Burn this iso to a CD-Rom, or flash it to a USB stick
- Reboot your computer, and from the BIOS, boot from the CD-Rom or the USB stick (just like with Linux or Windows installation CDs)
- Follow the instructions

If your Zero is bricked, it is advised that you first try to only flash the system partition, as this (hopefully) will not trash your data. If after that, the Zero still refuses to boot, do a full reflash.

This CD-Rom will flash the 2014-04-27 release of OpenDingux.

Download: http://gcw-zero.com/files/opendingux-rescue-cd-v0.3.iso
Changes since v0.2: Now flashes May 5th update with corruption bug fixed
Changes since v0.1: Fixed flashing of prototypes (thanks Harteex).

Hello. My Zero runs with a previous version of firmware (2013-10-04).
I want to backup my data and flash the new firmware via this Rescue-CD.
Will the firmware installed correctly without any issues?
I have no linux on my pc, only raspberry pi, to flash like in manual for separatly partitions.

a) If you try to install April firmware with this CD, you'll just get October back, unless you do a complete reflash (and then you lose your data). The CD is meant for everyone except those who have a working October firmware already, have not tried April at all, and want to keep their data.

Please wait for the OPK updater.

b) This is a CD with a bootable ISOLINUX on it, so you can pop it in and run the rescue environment even if you have a triple-boot of Mac OS X Hackintosh Edition, OpenBSD and Windows ME on it. To run it, you would just need to make sure that the BIOS is set to boot from CD. :)

edit: previous answer to 'a)' was tl;dr

If this thread is what you were going for, know that it's almost impossible to hard-brick a GCW Zero. The USB boot mode is built into the Ingenic JZ processors and it's written on a small bit of read-only NAND. You will always be able to run this CD and get a GCW Zero in working order again, unless you become physically unable to raise Power or press the Select button, or one of the connections is broken on the PCB, or your power circuit has died (but in that case, it's nothing that software can hope to fix).

Well he didn't say that his Zero is bricked and that he can't backup his data :)

Yeah, but then updating to April from a working October isn't the best with this CD.

Please wait for the OPK updater. This CD is for those who already have the partition table from the April update, but got a soft-brick as a result. They will run the system partition flasher only. (And those after April who want to restore their Zero to a pristine state, or get a soft-brick later on, already on the correct partition layout. They will run the flash-everything option.)
No, this CD is for everybody who need to reflash.
Doesn't matter which firmware was running before.

Thanks soooo much for this guys! I'll try it out tonight, as I have a dead zero at the moment.

I use Mac OSX, so I've read that it might be tricky to boot from a Linux CD like this, something to do with the Mac's use of EFI rather than BIOS. There appear to be workarounds, so I'll do a bit of digging and report back for any OSX users out there.

Blessed are you and the womb that bore you. My system is no longer bricked and I'm at peace.

If I understand correctly:
I want to reflash my Zero for the new firmware, and I can use this CD for it.
With this CD I can flash all partitions, include MBR, UNIBOOT, SYSTEM, DATA?

To update your console to the new firmware te best choise (IMHO) is wait that the fixed update will be out... this CD should be used if you have a "brick console"...

With my proto it fails each times, I tried with every options.

Tried with a new microSD ( removed the internal) with no luck. Does it need to be formatted before ? I don't think so.
