Handy320 1.0- Atari Lynx for GCW0
« on: July 14, 2013, 12:39:19 pm »
Hi
Here is Handy320- Atari Lynx emulator- compiled and packaged for GCW0.
Credit goes to: d_smagin, I've just compiled his sources and David Knight for fixing bugs.

USAGE:
You need a copy of lynx bios -lynxboot.img (512 Bytes, MD5: fcd403db69f54290b51035d82f835e7b), put it in /data/local/home/.handy
All other instruction in original thread

Download:
Here's an updated version of this emulator, now with full speed and doublebuffering enabled. I've also enabled the IPU to do the scaling and fixed the 'crash on exit' bug (accidentally as it happens ;)).

Thanks for this release Dmitry and Darth.   8) I was actually hoping you're picking up the ball.  ;)

Just a few minor things...

Exit in menu (and Select) does not terminate the emulator. It must be terminated using Power+Select.

Where can I put the ROMs in order to have them in the list, without navigating to a folder each time?

And is it somehow possible to save the settings, particularly the screen size (really a minor question)?
Emulator packs and fact sheets for Wiz, Caanoo, Dingoo and Pandora.

This is great! The sound is superb. I love Battle Zone. Some bugs like it crashes when I try to exit but who cares.

Exit in menu works fine for me. Select indeed behaves strage.

Handy doesn't save settings, initial settings are hardcoded. I'll chek if I can change this :)

Where can I put the ROMs in order to have them in the list, without navigating to a folder each time?

UPDATE:
file browser starts in /usr/local/home and remembers last directory used until emulator is terminated.

Download- link in the first post.

In future it may be possible to use gmenu2x file selector to launch Handy but now .lnx and .lyx (rom files) are not registered.

Thanks for the update Darth.

/usr/local/home for the standard ROM directory is much better than /mnt/lynx before. I use now /usr/local/home/lynx. Of course, it would be great, if the last selected directory could be saved together with the screen setting. As a temporary solution, I'm wondering if it would make sense to use /usr/local/home/.handy, since this directory has to exist anyway for the BIOS. The only problem I see, you're unable to navigate back to it, since hidden directories are not displayed in the ROM selector.

Btw, exit and select depends on the game. For example; it works for Block Out, Blue Lightning and Chip's Challenge, but it doesn't work for Batman Returns, Klax and Rampart. Pretty strange behaviour.

You can't use /mnt/lynx, it's read-only (opk file mount point)

I'll look into it but please don't expect quick response (I still have much to learn)

This may cause also other problems since .handy is a hidden directory

This is an emulator after all, original hardware didn't support "exit" except for power off ;)

Update
-version 1.0 (version numbering added by request)
-Handy now uses gmenu2x rom selector- this requires latest OD update
-icon may not be displayed properly (in my case it dosesn't), I'll check that later

I was randomly trying to find the menu, and pressed both SELECT and START together, the result was a hard lockup of the unit. There was no response to any keypress after the lockup, and I had to force power off with ( power -> up and hold ). This is easy to duplicate.

On another note, all games I have tried so far have worked very well, thank you.

Guys, sorry, I am a noob but I bought the GCW only for the lynx emulation; right now I am preparing an Sd card but I don't really understand the BIOS stuff. Where do I have to put it?

If you connect the GCW to your PC with USB and then FTP to 10.1.1.2, the "lynxboot.img" file should be to the "/data/local/home/.handy" directory.

Unfortunately, the Lynx emulator is not perfect yet. It does not play games that are meant to be played vertically like Klax and centipede. The screen is garbage then. And the sound is often distorted. Try checkered flag. The sound stutters and the framerate goes down to less than 35 when in the track select screen. Handy on the native Dingoo A320 performs better so I still can't live without the Dingoo  :P

There's also a way to connect the GCW via wi-fi. Then the address 10.1.1.2 changes to whatever IP your network has assigned to the GCW. The rest of the steps remains the same.

Does anyone know if it's in "scheduling" a new release of this emulator?

I only compiled and packaged it for GCW.
I monitor sources (both d_smagin's and official), if there will be updates I'll update GCW build.

USAGE:
You need to copy lynx bios -name must be lynxboot.img- in /data/local/home/.handy

Could you update the initial post with the MD5 hash of the correct bios image?

Thanks!
