Bermuda Syndrome
« on: August 05, 2014, 08:08:34 pm »
Here is a recompilation of Bermuda Syndrome as requested.

What works:
gameplay, controls, introduction sound, video, multiple saves

What doesn't work (yet):
videos
multiple saves

Controls:
D pad: jump/duck/left/right
X; draw/put away weapon
X (with direction): run
Y; show health
A; fire weapon
B; skip video/action
select: quit
start: inventory
Left shoulder: Previous savestate
Right shoulder: Next savestate
Slider up: Save game
Slider down: Load game

The game requires the original game files. They need to be placed in /usr/local/home/.bermudasyndrome/DATA/ directory.

Thanks to Century Interactive for the game, Gregory Montoir for the engine (http://cyxdown.free.fr/bs) and DiegoSLTS for the Dingux port which this port is almost entirely based on.

22/08 UPDATE --IMPORTANT-- update to OpenDingux 2014-08-20 before installing as needs hardware rescaling now
Fixed video not working
Hardware rescaling gives better graphics
Source code now packaged in opk
New icon, manual

24/08 UPDATE (trivial)
Now creates directories on first start

25/08 UPDATE (music workaround)
Updated manual with Gab1975's instructions on how to get music to play.

27/08 UPDATE (bugfix)
Fixed dialogue bug

28/08 UPDATE
Changed from /usr/local/home to $HOME

30/09 UPDATE
Enabled different save/load states. Changed controls.

Thanks for the porting... I hope that in the next release the videos will be available! :)

Updated original post with source code, if anyone can find out why videos are not playing I'd be very interested, I'm learning C and cannot figure it out. Video's play fine on FFplay so they are not corrupt files.

Thank you so much. I'll wait a couple of weeks before downloading though, hopefully someone fixes the video.

I've uploaded a new version with videos fixed. I've switched to hardware rescaling so you will need to update OpenDingux to version 2014-08-20 before it will work.

Thanks for the new release... I tried to re-download the opk, but the videos still don't work... maybe the link in the OP isn't updated yet!

EDIT: ... now it's all right! :)

I made an alternative icon... of course, if you like it, you can use it! :)

PS: in the default.gcw0.desktop "comment" there is a missing "r", that is: "Comment=Read the manual for instuctions" instead of "Comment=Read the manual for instructions"... obviously this is not an important point! ;)

The ".bermudasyndrome" folder is created automatically, but you need to make "manually" the sub-dir "DATA"... ;)

i think the first opk created .bermudasyndrome , which i missed,
current one does not

of course "manually" creating dirs all works fine  ;)

Trivial update
I'd started again from the original source code and forgot to add in the directory creation, fixed now. It now creates the .bermudasyndrome/DATA and .bermudasyndrome/MUSIC paths for you on first run.

I've also amended my atrocious spelling error ;)

Does anyone know exactly what goes inside DATA and MUSIC? Do I literally place the entire game inside the DATA folder? What about MUSIC? Is there a specific release of the game that actually has mp3 music?

Extracted from the instruction book (readme_gcw.txt):
Music is not yet implemented by the engine. In order to get music to work in game, convert all midi files to 22 Khz stereo Vorbis .ogg file format. Then place in the /usr/local/home/.bermudasyndrome/MUSIC folder. I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS MYSELF!

And regarding the data? Should I just place EVERYTHING in that folder?

You have done the right thing, that is to put all game files in the DATA folder! :)

The background musics work... I converted the MIDI files in OGG VORBIS (96 Kbps - 22,05 KHz - Stereo), I renamed them with the correct labels* and I put them in the MUSIC sub-directory! ;)

*title.mid=> track01.ogg
flyaway.mid => track02.ogg
jungle1.mid => track03.ogg
sadialog.mid => track04.ogg
caves.mid => track05.ogg
jungle2.mid => track06.ogg
darkcave.mid => track07.ogg
waterdiv.mid => track08.ogg
merian1.mid => track09.ogg
telquad.mid => track10.ogg
gameover.mid => track11.ogg
complete.mid => track12.ogg

Of course! :)

PS: there is also the icon (bs.png) which you can use... (I try again! :P) Joking aside, I tested this icon in the Gmenu2x and it's not so bad! ;)
