Zdoom crashes...cant update...HELP!?!?
« on: August 06, 2014, 09:23:24 am »
I have attempted to run a copy of Zdoom for the GCW that i found on Youtube (it showed it working). I tried to run Doom 2, and it just sent me back to the menu. I figured this might mean i need an update, ao i got the latest one (2014-5-5) and it crashed with no explanation as well. I even ran the mini update and still it brought me back to the menu. Ive looked everywhere, and cannot find a solution to this problem. Ive rebooted the system, thats all i could really think of. Please help!

Did you check your WAD and did you add the ".bin" extension to it (e.g. doom2.wad -> doom2.wad.bin) ?

Yeah, still nothing. It dosent show anything, it either crashes and brings me to the menu, or it brings me to the last application i ran.

Is the WAD file in lowercase or uppercase? Maybe it must be all in lowercase (name+extension)...

Yes, ive tried both lower and upper case. Also, this problem occurs with the update, PRboom+, and an atari 5200 emulator.

You don't forget that to install the latest firmware (2014-05-05) you need to install before the "special anti-corruption mini-update".

Would completely resetting the console fix this?
Edit: resetting did not fix the problem.

Would completely resetting the console fix this?
Pressing the reset button only shorts the power.

Is there anything that i can do to completely reset the system? And would resetting even fix this issue?

With Rescue Disc you can achieve a "full reset", but this is an "extreme" solution and I don't know if it will fix your "problems" !

It is possible that ZDoom crashes if something the code expects to be there, isn't there.

Please make a post in /GCW Zero/Development/ZDoom (yeah, Development, this is a work in progress and not a release) after getting a log of the errors it gives you after failing to start.

  • In gmenu2x, while all the categories and applications are shown, press Start, and enable "Output logs".
  • Start ZDoom.
  • If it crashes, go to the Settings category and see if a Log Viewer icon is present, and if so, choose it.
  • If the log is short, you can type it out into the post. If not, the log is a file on the device, which you can look at after transferring it to your PC.
If the log is long, you will need to get the file /var/log/gmenu2x.log before you next plan to shut down, reboot or reset-button your GCW Zero. You can get it by SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol):

  • Connect your GCW Zero to your computer via USB or WiFi. Note the IP address of the GCW Zero, given in /Settings/Network.
  • Make sure /Settings/Network allows you to log in with or without a password.
  • On your computer, connect to the IP of the GCW Zero, with the username root and the password (or no password) over SFTP. (FTP won't work.)
  • Change the remote path to /var/log. Change the local path to something you know how to get to using standard tools like My Computer, Nautilus, Dolphin, the Finder, etc.
  • Transfer gmenu2x.log from remote to local.

Ok, so i ran the  output logs, and the log viewer stated this upon crashing:

/zdoom: can't load library'libopenal.so.1'

I'm not a "big expert", but if I remember well the OpenAL library is supported by the latest firmware... are you sure to have installed the correct firmware (2014-05-05) in your device?

Ive had a problem installing the latest firmware as well. For some reason, it crashes whenever i try to run the update, even after i ran the mini update that it came with.

In Theory, after you installed the "mini update", the firmware upgrade should go without problems... in any case, seeing that your ZDoom issue is probably related to the "OpenAL lib" missing, the "rescue disc v0.3" could be a solution!

As i am somewhat new to the GCW community, could you point me to some sort of video tutorial on running the update disk?

As far as I know, there isn't a dedicated video tutorial... in any case, it's pretty simple...
1) burn the "Rescue Disc" iso to a CD-R;
2) reboot your computer and from the BIOS select "boot from the CD-ROM"... How to set BIOS to boot from CD-ROM;
3) insert the CD-ROM in the computer optical disc drive and follow the instructions on screen (to re-flash your device).

NB: it should be better if you suceed to update your GCW Zero with the standard update file.

Is your current firmware at least October (OpenDingux Release 2013-10-04)? If not, install that update first.

So i got the rescue disk, but it wont let me select different options, and after i flashed it on a partial flash (it wont let me select anything else), the problem still persists.
