How to perform smartphone battery mod?
« on: July 27, 2017, 09:23:51 am »
I was considering modding a smartphone battery into my Zero, but all of the images in this thread giving instructions on how to do so are broken. Does anybody have those images backed up, or are able to explain how to do so? Also, would the Note 2 battery be usable in the mod? It seems to have the required 3.7V.

All you really have to do is:

* Desolder the original battery
* Solder in the new battery

Notes:
* As for polarity, ground/black is the upper pad, +3.7v/red is the lower pad, but double check before you desolder the original.
* The GCW will immediately power back on as soon as both leads have been connected.
* Use whatever lithium-polymer battery fits, really. I think the rough dimensions of the stock battery (by the model number printed on it) are 4.6/36/108mm (depth/width/length). There may be more headroom in length and depth than width, however.
* Ideally, you'd want to splice in a JST connector; much, much less can go wrong.

Thanks, knowing the exact dimensions is very helpful. I was also looking at this from the wrong perspective, I should be able to find a battery that fits now.

I'm very tempted to do that. the initial wiring for the old battery was so flimsy, I'm surprised it stayed connected this long. soldering batteries directly to PCBs should be outlawed
