GCW Zero will not fully turn on
« on: February 05, 2017, 04:53:46 am »
I had issues with my Zero for a while now. After reading a few posts I figured my main issue was a lose battery wire connection and I just needed to re solder the wire to the board.

After the re soldering I was happy to see my Zero holding a charge and not blinking but had a blank black screen that looks like no power running through it. It constantly has the green LED on unless it runs out of battery or I press the reset button. Switching off the device normally will do nothing to the screen or green LED.

I tried then to reflash the system with the repair disk. It sat for a minute or two but then failed. I continued this for a while till I figured it was the USB cable or the SD card. I replaced both and tried again to reflash making sure the SD card was in FAT32. Still no change.

I am starting to think I shorted something out or some other thing while soldering the battery wire back on. Any help would be appreciated.

You could try plugging it in through USB, then telnet into it at 10.1.1.2 to see if anything's running.

So I followed the instructions on this post http://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-general/(howto)-terminal-access-to-gcw0-using-telnet/ but nothing starts in the terminal like it does in the instructions.

Interesting... I've never used the rescue disk myself, since I use a linux distro anyway, I always ran the program from my OS.

You can load the backup romfs by holding the Y button on bootup.
Pressing A on bootup should show error messages.

Could you disclose what steps you took, and options taken while using the rescue disc?

What kind of PC are you using? Perhaps use a USB2.0 port instead of 3.0; or a different hub?

You may also be able to remove the microsd from the GCW, and flash it in Windows, see here.

Before trying to flash the rescue disk I tried all the button combos. It seems the only one that works is the reset and select to get it to mount to USB. Any other combo will not do anything on screen(screen stays black) or let me turn the unit off.

The options to re flash I took was retail unit since my wife got it off of think geek. I then opted for a full wipe. It starts for about 5-10 seconds and then failure.

I will try the flash to SD by itself when I get home.
