GCW Zero Manager - OPK Install/Uploads
« on: October 01, 2016, 04:35:35 pm »
I've had some difficulty with getting some files, but not others onto my Zero with the GCW Zero Manager. In particular, the Anomaly web browser OPK ( and a ~14mb .love file (Love2D game -- Both crap out partway with some kind of session timeout/failure despite the fact that other files and OPKs seem to work just fine. Sometimes they leave behind a partial file on the Zero and sometimes they don't.

Anyone else experience this and/or know why it happens and what can be done about it?

Although I can't help you with GCW Zero Manager you can transfer problematic large files files to your unit via the external micro SD card slot (move files internally via Dingux Commander from the external SD card to the internal one) or using FTP (Filezilla + binary transfers).

Alright, thanks. It just seems odd that the manager would have a problem. Fortunately I do have a microSD card on hand.

A transfer that timeouts may indicate problems with the storage/filesystem, or just problem problems with the SD card driver. Or maybe your storage is full?

No idea. I'll try to have another go at some point.

I'm not sure how the SD card could be full, given that internal storage is 16GB. I don't think I have enough installed to fill it. At the bottom left in the menu (gmenu2x) it says '13.7/14.0 GB'. I take that to mean it's mostly empty, but maybe I misunderstand.

In any case, it seemed odd that it wasn't a problem with other .opk, files, etc. When I figured out how to make a proper OPK with the .love file, that OPK was copied fine, but the .love file alone hadn't been earlier. Since files should all transfer the same, I assume there's something up with the program, but maybe whatever code (on the GCW0) writes to the card can be overloaded with data. Of course that's all speculation, all I know is that it didn't work.

One thing about GCW Zero that certainly doesn't help:
I've noticed that transfers to internal SD card (some call it NAND) is slower than transfers to an external SD card. Usually by a factor of 2-3. When transferring to either, the transfer will go quite quickly until perhaps 4MB have been transferred and then transfer rate drops like a rock and settles out to often less than 1MB/sec when transferring to internal SD. I guess that is when Linux decides to start actually writing to the SD from the data it has buffered, and the slow SD driver is allowed to bog things down.

Whenever I have to transfer something large, I prefer to transfer it using a tolerant FTP client with a large timeout (I use an ancient unix FTP client called ncftp, works great)
