Release Index - Software versions

Suggestion: would be really usefull writing the version number or date in the index, specially in emulators and utilities.

In my opinion, it's a waste of effort. Any competent developer on this forum would make a post announcing a new version. This would bump the topic and mark it "new". So, all you'd have to do is keep track of unread topics on gcw-releases to get new versions.

Besides, to announce a new version; I would have to find it, edit the Index, and post an update, which the developers should already be doing. It's redundant.

Discuss.

I know I like it when a program has a version number or date in the title rather than just "program.opk".

But beggars can't be choosers and I'm content with whatever those clever enough to figure out how to get things to run on the Zero care to do.

I don't think including version numbers is really worth it, if it's being done by hand. The most important thing is that the link directs the user to the thread which has the newest version.

It would be helpful only if there was a way to determine what version is on the Zero, and be able to see that there's a newer version on the post.  Sometimes, it's a bit tricky -- and since I update two other Zero's I don't use, it helps to know what is newer on mine than on theirs.

I agree with showing versions in the title of posts and links about applications.

That's why I tend to put dates and versions in my entries on the GCW Zero downloads page, for example for ReGBA and PocketSNES, in the absence of "proper" version management ? la Filetrip etc.

Yes, but the Index is not a repo. A Repo should have version numbers because it is the primary source for software. The Index is a secondary source: it just makes it easier for you to parse the forum--a primary source--for software.

The index does not require versioning.
It's just a lot of hassle that can be helped with a click on the software link in the index.
To me it even feels redundant.

I understand the reason for not making that effort, it won't make any difference for the most active members, but I think it would be really useful for the casual members or the Zero users that are not even registered here and just check the forum sometimes to see if there's something new. The release index post is quite awesome anyways, but it would be a nice improvement IMO.
