Great news, I've found a new drop-in replacement LCD panel replacement for the GCW, sourced from Digikey (http://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/newhaven-display-intl/NHD-3.5-320240MF-ASXV-/NHD-3.5-320240MF-ASXV--ND/6099686).
It looks better than the stock LCD, has a much wider viewing angle, and there's no pixel inversion to speak of. This is due to the difference in LCD technology; this is an MVA panel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin-film-transistor_liquid-crystal_display#MVA), comparable to IPS panels.
I've uploaded an album, the pictures speak for themselves:

I do offer an LCD replacement service (among other things, check my webpage linked in my signature), but it's easy enough to replace yourself if you're careful. You do run the risk of damaging your hardware, however, so I wouldn't recommend replacing it yourself unless you have a soldering iron handy in case a wire breaks off somewhere.
No modification to the firmware is necessary.

This is great, it looks delicious 8)
I'd like to know more about 3 things, compared to the stock one :
-Power consumption, because battery life of the GCW is so great !
-Response time (that would be 25/40ms according to the datasheet (http://"http://www.newhavendisplay.com/specs/NHD-3.5-320240MF-ASXV.pdf") !? )
-What about the brightness at min/max settings ? I love the truly dimmed lcd of the Zero at minimum setting (compared to the Caanoo!)
(I don't even know the reference/specs of the stock lcd ::) )
Anyway, this is awesome !!
-
The response times are equivalent to that of the old LCD, but it is a bit brighter. It still looks good on the lowest brightness, I think. I haven't tried it out outside yet (it hasn't been daytime yet :P) but I'll take some more pictures soon.
I'm not sure about the power consumption; it may be slightly higher due to the brighter backlight, but the logic circuits may be more power efficient; I'd have to test that out somehow.
Here are the datasheets, you can read for yourself (one of them defines the measures of response times, viewing angle, etc):

I need to find a source in Europe to avoid the horrible shipping :-)

@wepecko, Digikey have a UK site too, if that helps;

I'll see what I can do.

Hey so to clear something up you provide the screen too (for a free of course) in addition to the labor on replacing the old screen with the new one?
-
I don't have two fully working GCW's on hand at the moment, but I hooked both the old screen (on the left) and the new screen (on the right) up to Playstation 2 consoles through a component interface, and loaded up the same game twice.
Here's a side-by-side comparison:

Yep, I can order the screens. (I think I answered you in an email, but I'll clarify it here anyway.)

Does anyone else has purchased and can ensure that it makes a difference with respect to the official screen GCW Zero?
-
If only i could find a new bezel I'd have a reason to pop open my GCW to install this screen I have sitting in front of me :p

So I did the change recently.
I confirm the hw is the same size, the replacement process is easy, you need just a screwdriver to get inside and dismount the board.
There is no wow moment with new lcd, but I can confirm better brightness and much better viewing angles. Therefore the colors seems to be a bit more lively.
Im happy to have old display as backup now, just in case, in the drawer.

Nice.

What about the color accuracy ? Your screen seems to be kind of inaccurate compared to the original. It would be nice if you could take better videos with a 4k camera and with better lights, maybe also videos taken from outside with the daylight.
-
Or course, it's not going to have exactly the same colour temperature as the stock LCD. It's a slightly different panel technology and iirc has a different type of LED. I would say it's slightly warmer.
As for videos, I've been waiting for a second gcw all this time.
Best you'll get out of me are cellphone camera videos.

Hi,
thanks for the info.
I put the screen in my GCW last night it works great, looks much better too those old viewing angles annoyed me.
I used the link for the screen for digi-key in the UK, screen came in two days make sure your order comes to ?33 then you don't pay shipping. (I added some tape)
Thanks again

Hi all,
How difficult is it to fit the new screen ?
thanks

Depends how good you are at tinkering and soldering.
There are a lot of components that break easily, but nothing that can't fixed with a little care and soldering really.
If you've never done anything like it before, I would not recommend doing it yourself.
