Multimedia functions on the GCW ( and on OD ) ?
« on: August 30, 2013, 04:42:08 pm »
Hi :)

I don't know if this question is stupid but I will ask it anyway : will there be ( or are there already ) multimedia functions on the GCW ( such as reading videos and music ) ? I know the GCW is basically for gaming, but I think it would be great playing videos and music on-the-go ( e.g. in the bus when one is tired being beaten by a hard boss ).

Thanks in advance ;D

Also, marcos.souza was trying to make a radio app since the hardware is there.

So there is an app for the music ? Awesome :)

But will it be easy to put music on the console ? ( I'm not sure, but I think it will be like putting games on it )

You told me something for music exists. But what about videos ? ( correct me if I'm wrong, but if it exists, it will always be in a 4:3 aspect ratio on the GCW, right ? )

Looks wonderful :) Gonna check when I have my unit ;D

Does someone know if there is ( or would be ) a video app ( because GMU is for music ) ? And if so, will it always keep ( as I guess ) a 4:3 aspect ratio ?

is there a image viewer? i always get lost in metroid :P

LOL that made my day ;D

There is no video player, and I doubt we'll have one anytime soon.

Ok thanks. I ask it because I'm curious of what my awesome future console will be able to do :P

But well, I don't buy a video game console because it can cut the grass or peel potatoes : I buy it because it plays video games ;D

( Even if I don't say no to new functionalities ;D )

While it might be neat, I can't imagine it being used much, and most people are just going to carry their phones with them which would be suitable for the same purpose and do it better anyway.

Hey, you might be able to keep guides for games you suck at on it.

One of the reasons for no video player is codec patents. So even if we had a video player (which we don't), we couldn't give it to you guys.

Really ? I thought there were open-source codecs

There are patents on the technology. It doesn't matter if the software implementation of the codec is open source. It allows you to play a certain patented video/audio format and that means you have to pay (no small money) if you sell a device with it.

Ok :D

But I'm wondering : are there also patents for GMU ( the music player that pcercuei recommended me ) ?

Yes, we can't ship it with the units due to MP3 patents.

Ohh I understand :D

That means one could create the opk containing the codecs... but you would have to pay patents if you sold it with the console, right ?

But it also means that one could create the opk ( with the codecs ) and offer it to free download, doesn't it ?

Yes to both, assuming this opk is not distributed by any official channels (ie. our repository), so it cannot be attributed to us.

Yes, there are no issues if users install these codecs. Distribution still is an issue. That's why VLC for example is hosted in France.

Would it be easy for someone to create an opk of an open-source video reader ?

And if one of the devs knows how to port this kind of app, can he make a *ahem* really precise tuto on how to D.I.Y ? I mean, it's not "really" like giving us the app.
