If anyone's still on the fence, I wrote a review of the Zero on my blog. Includes a preamble on the other options I tested/considered before settling on the Zero.

I agree with pretty much everything you said in your blog.

Concise review, but...

Large screen
Nope, I wouldn't call the gcw's screen large. It is however the perfect aspect ratio and resolution for retro gaming.

Plays practically every emulated console until the 16-bit era.
And quite a lot of computers too. I'm working on adding to the list ;)

Fantastic!  PSX seems pretty fluid with its speed! Not bad at all! Too bad on the sound glitches. But thanks for the informative an awesome videos!  Very cool to see mega Man X for seemingly work that well along with the rest!

I own a GCW since this week, bought it in mint condition for 115 euros shipped from abroad.
Here are my impressions.

The good
The size is excellent, this is a handheld that you can take with you: not as small as the Wiz/GBA micro, not as big as the GPD XD.
The handheld is very light.
The 3,5 inch screen is a great 4:3 size screen.
It is awesome for Genesis, Snes and PSX emulation. Also for Neogeo and GBA.

The not-so-good
The d pad sucks.
The handheld feels a bit cheap because it is so light.
The PC engine emulator has no vsync, so that makes it worthless.
FBA: Hmmm. Neogeo, cps1 and cps2 are great on FBA. But why won't regular games like Shinobi, Tetris (no sound), Raiden DX and all those Irem M72 games play on it with full speed?
Mame: luckily this plays Shinobi, Rolling Thunder, Tetris and more but no Irem M72 games.

I am 75% satisfied with it.
The things I would change is:
Better dpad, better buttons, better pc engine emu and better arcade / mame enulation.
The things I like: really great snes and genesis emu! Better than those I have on my psp and gpd xd!

@davidgilmour - You might be interested in a 3D printed Dpad.

Thanks, yes I have seen them. Just a little too scared to open my gcw zero to exchange them, does not seem like an easy job ( even though I am quite technical, I made a verticade arcade cabinet but this seems too tight ).
Hopefully the mame emulation will get better, it is a 1000 Mhz processor we have to run those 12 mhz irem games. I think it might be possible  ;)

Slaanesh maintains and updates gcw zero mame. It might be worth contacting him about the irem arcade games

I have found some new emulators so this is my new revisited review!
(Thanks for the tip about irem games @van denhawk )

The not-so-good
The d pad is not so good: I don't get a good response.
The speakers are not so good: why didn't Justin spend $2 extra on better one?
The handheld feels a bit cheap because it is so light or is it the cheap plastic?

The good and excellent
The handheld is very light.
The size is excellent, this is a handheld that you can take with you in your jacketpocket!
The 3,5 inch screen is a great 4:3 size screen.
It is awesome for Genesis, Snes, PC Engine and PSX emulation. Also for Neogeo and GBA. And MAME!
Some of my favourite games play on mame now that did not work on the slower handhelds like PSP or Dingoo a320.
The 1ghz processor is doing a fine job emulating all those 8-12 mhz 16bit and some 25mhz 32bit arcade games!

I am 90% satisfied with it. Mostly because of the size and emulation quality!  ;D ;D ;D
The things I would change in a GCW2 version is
Better dpad, better buttons, better speakers, updated screen (ips) and processor (2ghz)

I agree, the stock d-pad is kind of unpleasant (I've not looked into grease or replacement plastic piece yet). It sticks and squeaks more than such things ought to. The speakers really aren't bad though, they're probably a bit mediocre even for mobile devices but they work well enough. On the whole the unit does feel a bit less quality then one might expect for the price. I'm not certain on plastic quality, but it does feel a little bit light.

I strongly doubt there will ever be another GCW2, but I'd be in favor of those improvements with the caveat that I don't think a faster processor is really necessary.

I agree with davidgilmour : the build quality isn't that great.
In fact, it feels very cheap. (i still have my analog stick stuck)
I would have been very mad if i actually bought it. (But yoshi was kind enough to send me one for free so thx)

Yes, it is a pretty cool device as far emulators go.
That being said, i invite you to give my Wonderswan emulator a try, if you haven't already.
Check out Mupen64Plus by Nebuleon too.

I would personally be interested if Justin decides to work on a sucessor because the GCW0 really wasn't built in mind for Detailed 3D Games and high-end emulators...
(2 Ghz would be too weak btw, it needs to be clocked at 3Ghz or have 2 cores clocked at 2Ghz for decent performance)

The springs are stuck, or it's just the contacts ?
With the console preferably switched off, you can spray a little bit of electronic contact cleaner aerosol in your joystick, it cleans immediately and acts as a lubricant too, after a few days. Once you've sprayed it move in all directions to spread the product, wipe off the excess if any and let it dry (analog potentiometers are simply 2 carbon tracks). This is a good fix !

So in june, I've made a fresh first impressions and comparison between the Zero and the Caanoo, on the french forum OpenConsoles. The idea was to know if upgrading from Caanoo to Zero was worth it. So I decided to translate it here because this could also contain useful "review material" !

Quote
Despite the similitudes between the two consoles, this is where the Zero is the greatest one :

-The screen (same 3.5inch/320x240), On the GCW pixels look more fine and crispier, also way better contrast and deep blacks. Display is great on the Caanoo, but appears a bit washed out in direct comparison (Switched off the Zero's one is plain black, where the caanoo is a bit grey). And the backlight : At the minimum settings this is very dim (Sounds dumb but that's not the case on the Caanoo, even on minimum that's way too bright in darkness)
-Battery life (Because I modded my Caanoo with a 2200mah, so exactly the same) : This is absolutely perfect... The hardware holds the charge for a very, very long time.
-Performances : The gap is far more important than I thought. Upgrading was really worth it !
-Good surprise with the triggers : deep course and soft (rubber dome), I prefer that. On the Caanoo there are very short and clicky (microswitches)

Now, this is where the Caanoo stays superior :

-Build quality, and controls : Robust, perfect ! For example abxy buttons have a better disposition and course, make easier simultaneous pushes. No dpad... If the Caanoo had a dpad, it would be better :p (For perfect experience you'll have to mod these)
-Touchscreen / stylus ! Perfect for scummvm, grafx and such, and a brighter maximum backlight setting.
-GMenu2x 0.11 is more rich in options than opendingux, so easier to customize than on the Zero.
-Sound : Way more powerful, no saturation, good lows, medium are good and the highs are way less shrill/harsh.

So I love them both, but the Caanoo will rest for a while :)

So, now, with more hindsight, I still have the same general impressions ! Love it even more since I modded the controls (and the poor Caanoo rests more too^^)

You know? I've heard the "it feels cheap because it's really light" comment a couple of times on here and I must say that that is solely a first impression alone? I swear, With all of my other handhelds I have to eventually put them down, but the zero feels like a controller that has everything on the face of it.  It's truly incredible how light it is but how much of a  punch it packs.

I am SO THANKFUL for how light in weight it is.

In the long term, I think you will agree. @davidgilmour
