Author Topic: GCW Zero disassembly, D-pad mod, and face buttons mod tutorial  (Read 20041 times)

I made one! Click here.

As a first time modder, I had a lot of trouble disassembling my zero and made a lot of mistakes. I didn't have a tutorial to help me, so I made one while I modded mine.

It took me a lot of trial and error to get here, but here it is.
Enjoy :D

I'm having trouble understanding what you mean by this step:

"Since the plastic on the inner corners of the D-pad is so thick, there'll be no room to press anything unless you remove some of it. You'll want to halve the thickness of the plastic on the D-pad's inner corners, removing the top half."

And the picture you supplied to illustrate this is pretty blurry, so I'm having a hard time making out really what you're describing.

Is there any way you think you can re-state your intentions?

Ok, I made some edits with a new picture, I hope it's more clear this time. Basically, this prevents the plastic on the inner corners from being so thick they're pressing on the membrane beneath.

This is totally the sort of thing I've been waiting for, since the d-pad is the key factor in limiting my enjoyment with the system, so thanks much.

Will there be a similar tutorial for face-button mods also? I'm interested in picking up those replacement face buttons and DMG d-pad.

I only took pictures of the finished buttons for the face buttons mod, but the procedure is pretty straightforward. I could write something up sometime later.

That would certainly be appreciated in any case.

Ok, here it is. I'm not sure how understandable it is without pics, but I think you can pretty much guess what I'm trying to say.

Thanks in advance for this.  My A button sticks almost every time it is pressed now, and I wasn't exactly looking forward to figuring out how to open it.  At least now I have some idea what I face.

Hi everyone !

Here's my own tutorial for disassembling and modding the zero !

Dropbox changed its policy so here's a flickr album : https://flic.kr/s/aHsmxVUj6G

And the classic disclaimer :

Opening the zero is likely to void your warranty (if there's any). That hardware modification is really likely to ruin your device. I could not be held for responsible if anything goes wrong. In any case, use common sense and don't try it if your not able to solder or know someone who can fix it for you if anything goes wrong.

That being said, happy modding.

Maybe you can contribute to the existing tutorial located at the wiki. Some pictures are clearer in my opinion.

As you can see, I cut the DMG d-pad a bit differently from the tutorial.

Feel free to use any of the pics for whatever you want.

I've added some of your pics to the wiki. I saw your JST connector mod in the other thread and I have mine in shipping :D

Thanks for the info and pics - you're a helluva lot braver than me when it comes to taking apart the Zero.    :)

Is a video tutorial possible?

I'd rather keep it as a text/picture tutorial, so it can remain editable on the wiki. I think the current tutorials are adequate enough; it's not that difficult, just time consuming.

Does anyone in the community do this on request? As in I give you money, you send me a modded zero. I do not trust my hands for that kinda work and it seems like a lot of little things that should have been done in production. Seriously. Adding the ability to remove and replace the battery. For me that's a huge deal.

Speaking of. Does the zero take a battery you can buy replacements for? What kind of battery would fit in after doing that mod?

Anyone have an idea how to improve the responsiveness of the the shoulder buttons? My left one is pretty awful.
