Nice pun. It's been in development for quite some time. It has not been canceled and the devs are still working on the project.

If that's the case, why have there been no news updates of any sort to their website or facebook page for close to 2 years?

The latest information I have is based on my reply to the Topic: Is the GCW Zero/OpenDingux dead? thread (https://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-general/is-the-gcw-zeroopendingux-dead/).

AFAIK Zear is uninterested in the GCW Zero at the moment as I had e-mailed him on February 28th 2018 and the e-mail has remained unanswered. Here's the transcript so you can judge for yourselves.

Hello Zear,

As someone who bought into the GCW Zero, I am wondering if you knew what happened to it considering you are a major contributor to the project.

I was also wondering what happened to the Unnamed Monkey Game, is it still in development? Do you have further plans for it such as releasing it on itch.io
or Steam (or GOG.com further along down the line)?

Did they die off or is something else planned?

I like your work,

Hal Motley

Zear and his team originally had real ambitions for the game going by the website, but sometime between then and now he seems to have lost interest. As you can see by my reply on that thread I implore he open-source the code at least if abandoned so that we can port it over to other platforms such as Retroarch.

Good news everyone, I got a reply from Zear and I am grateful he took some time out of his Sunday afternoon to answer our questions.

Hello,

First of all, let me apologize for a late reply.

> As someone who bought into the GCW Zero, I am wondering if you knew what happened to it considering you are a major contributor to the project.
As you might know, the GCW Zero project is maintained by a group of hobbyists in their free time.
I can only speak of myself, but the free time was rather limited for me in the recent times. Despite this, I made a number of new developments for GCW Zero and I'm looking forward to releasing at least one new project soon.
As for the kernel contributions - they are usually less visible to an end user, because a new firmware can't be released until everything is in a finished and stable state. Nevertheless, I can attest that the scene is still
active in this field (and you can see that yourself on the public git repository of the project).

> I was also wondering what happened to the Unnamed Monkey Game, is it still in development?
Yes, UMG is in continuous development. Game development involves a lot of work, including programming, creating game assets, gameplay testing, etc., especially when it's done exclusively in our free time.
We intend to provide the best quality product we can and as thus it's taking a while... but we certainly still intend to release Unnamed Monkey Game.

> Do you have further plans for it such as releasing it on itch.io or Steam (or GOG.com further along down the line)?
It's too early for us to elaborate on the methods of distribution of the final product.

> I like your work
Thanks! I always appreciate that.

Cheers,
Artur "zear" Rojek

PS. I'm always available on IRC (http://www.gcw-zero.com/irc) if you'd like to talk more. I don't check my e-mail all that often.

That's good to hear. Even though I've backed GPD Win 2 and can't wait for it as my next handheld #1, I'm still using my GCW Zero and don't think I will send it to the dormancy soon. It's a neat tiny device.
