Turn-based strategy game recommendations?
« on: September 20, 2013, 01:56:01 am »
Are there any good turn-based strategy games floating around out there that anyone would recommend for my GCW?  I'm interested in ones that are multiplayer, too.  I'm looking for something that I may not have played -- an indie release or otherwise.  It would be awesome if there are any homebrew games that fall into this category.

Similar games that I've liked:
  • Romance of the Three Kingdoms
  • Advance Wars
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Aerobiz Supersonic (my favorite)
  • Tactics Ogre
  • Nobunaga's Ambition
  • Fire Emblem

Any recommendations would be well received.  Thanks!

Only emulated ones at the moment, which would probably put this in the wrong place.

I'd recommend Shining Force, which has a sequel on the Genesis, and much better remake on the GBA.

I really enjoying Advance Wars on the GCW-0. Runs really good with ReGBA.

I'm enjoying Shining Force CD on the Sega CD at the moment.

I would recommend Rebelstar Tactical Command on GBA.

It is similar to XCOM UFO enemy unknown (DOS game) and Laser Squad on C64, though more Japanese like, so I think that you will like it :D

Some of my personal favorites:

Bahamut Lagoon (Super Famicom)
Dark Wizard (Sega CD)
Brigandine (PlayStation)

As for homebrew... I did a quick search on pdroms.de, but all that jumped out was the Pandora port of Wesnoth... there might be something for one of the emulated consoles, hidden away without "strategy" in its description, so it may still be worth a deeper look.
My machines:
GBC,GBA,GBA SP,NDS,NGPC,Panasonic FZ-10 3DO,NES,Sega Nomad,Sega CDX w/Power Base Converter,PS1,PS2,PS3,Saturn,Dreamcast,PC (Win 98, XP, 7),Dingoo A320,Dingoo A330,Gemei A330,LetCool N350JP,PAP-GAMETA,GCW-Zero SE,Kyocera Rise,2DS,GP2X-F100,GPD G7,JXD 100,JXD A1000,JXD A3300,JXD F3000,JXD V5000,JXD S7300B,Hyperkin SupaBoy

Currently playing: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call (2DS)

TBS, I love it.  I'm also a huge fan of the Advance Wars series. :)

But don't forget the classics...

Military Madness (Nectaris) PCE
Advanced Military Commander (Advanced Daisenryaku) MD
Warsong (Langrisser) MD
Langrisser II MD
Emulator packs and fact sheets for Wiz, Caanoo, Dingoo and Pandora.

I'll certainly check these recommendations out.  Thank you, everyone, for the input.

I was afraid there may not be too many homebrew games in this genre -- especially the less-popular sub genre of business simulation.  There's eMo Aero Boss (http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/emoaeroboss/index.php?title=Main_Page), a game that takes its inspiration from Aerobiz, but I doubt it'll be ported over.

In the mean time, I'll start looking at the games that have been recommended.  Thanks!

Take a look at this one http://www.romhacking.net/translations/346/.  A lost jewel from the Super Nintendo, the translation was finished last year.

All of the other Koei historical games for nes and snes (there are quite a few c.f. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koei#Games_by_Koei).

Ogre battle for snes.
Front mission sfami (full fanlation available).
Metal marines snes.
Famicom wars fami (full fanlation available).
Super famicom wars (partial trans).
I second Bahamut lagoon. I liked that one back in the day.
Robotrek Snes (is a bit of an odd bird, also slated towards a slightly younger audience, but fun and refreshing).
FEDA: Emblem of Justice sfami (full fanlation available).
Wonder project J sfami (full fanlation available) also a bit different but interesting.

Aerobiz snes md (If you liked the sequel, you may like the first one).
Themepark snes.
Sim city games snes.
Sim Earth snes.
Sim ant snes.
Populous snes (not turn based though).
Utopia snes.
Civilisation snes.

War 3010: The Revolution (so/so game)
Worms snes.

Confilict nes.
Shingen the ruler nes (a less fun clone of rottk IMO).
Wall street kid nes.

Faselei! on NeoGeo pocket, as an afterthought.
