Request: Marathon trology/Aleph One Engine
« on: June 03, 2014, 05:57:03 pm »
There is an engine out that runs the old bungie marathon games as well as other games based on that engine.

http://marathon.sourceforge.net

Any chance at this getting ported over if it hasn't already?

I thought of this as well, the other day. But the biggest issue in porting it would be the GUI, as well as controls. Also, even then, the games were designed w/ a 640x480 resolution in mind, so I don't think they will scale all that well to the GCW's resolution of 320x240.

Creating a 320x240 friendly GUI would be a start, and maybe the controls aren't as complicated as I'm remembering. Dunno otherwise, as I'm not a programmer.

Aleph One was ported to legacy Dingux on A320, don't think it works on the GCW though. From what I remember it looked fine scaled down but the controls are bodged.

Hello, I've built the source hacked for dingoo http://www.mediafire.com/file/e95owt3ti41o7cj/AlephOne-src-dingoo.7z with the gcw-zero toolchain. But when I try to run it on the zero I've this error

Was this ever resolved? I'd love to play this on my GCW, even at the reduced resolution of the GUI. One great thing about Marathon is that all of the commercial game files were released by Bungie and free to download and play, which puts it a step ahead of trying to find DOOM or Duke Nukem wads and grp files which are still copyright.

As far as memory goes, the various Map, Shape, Images, Physics, Music and Sounds files were specific to each 'flavor' of Marathon. So nothing that should be put in an .opk file. You'd want to adjust things so that you'd have a /home/.alephone folder, and then a folder for each of the desired games you want to play: Marathon, Marathon 2, Infinity, or any of your desired TCs, like Tempus Irae, Evil, or Rubicon. I see the folder layout as being something like so:

/home/.alephone/
      Marathon/
            Maps.scen
            Sounds.sndz
            Physics.phys
            Shapes.shps
            Music/
      Marathon2/
            Maps.scen
            Sounds.sndz
            Physics.phys
            Shapes.shps
            Music/
      Infinity/
            Maps.scen
            Sounds.sndz
            Physics.phys
            Shapes.shps
      TempusIrae/
            Maps.scen
            Sounds.sndz
            Physics.phys
            Shapes.shps

etc.

Then a launcher would have you choose which of the available scenarios present in /home/.alephone to play before running the game engine.

Full disclosure - I was one of the principle guys behind Tempus Irae so I have a special interest in seeing this thing work! :)

Any updates on this? It would be great to be able to play the Marathon trilogy. :)

I was thinking about this the other day. Actually, I was thinking about Pathways Into Darkness, an even earlier Bungie FPS, and that reminded me of Marathon and Aleph One, and I thought how cool it would be to play that on the GCW.

I made a test build a couple of months ago but didn't get past a segfault. It should work with some more TLC.

However I'm working on  several other ports atm.
