USB Multiplayer Quake II on latest firmware.
« on: May 08, 2014, 02:40:20 am »
Somehow, I've managed to forget where I downloaded Quake II for the Zero.  Would someone be kind enough to link me?  Thanks!

-EDIT  Someone was nice enough to explain why I thought I needed another download in the first place.  It's not working on the latest firmware version yet.

-EDIT  Member Vato pointed out that with a little cajoling, Quake 2 WILL run on the 5-5 Firmware.  I have pasted his instructions here so that this post will continue to be relevant to this section.

"- on your pc, use 7zip to extract the contents of quake2.opk to a folder (this is also a good spot to add the full games pak1.pak and pak2.pak to the baseq2 folder, if you happen to have those files available).
- drop the un-opk'd quake2 folder somewhere on your sd.
- fire up the GCW-0 and tap select to bring up the menu. tap A to 'Add link in...'
- navigate to the quake2 folder, highlight sdlquake2 and press start to confirm.
- that's basically it. find the sdlquake2 in gmenu, boot 'er up and start the slaughter fest. "  -Credit to Vato

Also, as Vato pointed out, the Quake 2 opk may be downloaded at https://docs.google.com/folderview?id=0B9EgGumkJaabSE9TaEdFbVVBSlU#list

EDIT:  For the USB Multiplayer information, see Page 3, Reply #36.

AH!  Well, that explains it!  Thanks, I thought it was something I'd done wrong.

Ha, strange. I tested some stuff after I installed the latest firmware and Quake 2 was working.

Also, is there an OpenGLes version of Quake 2 for the GCW0? I would love to try that!

There is one (not released), but it has worse performance than the soft rendered one.

shenanigans. it works here =P

indeed, you are correct that the standard quake2.opk just sends you back to gmenu when launched, but i r master troubleshooter, and make it go real good, rayray.

hope you can follow instructions. here's how to get the game running.
- on your pc, use 7zip to extract the contents of quake2.opk to a folder (this is also a good spot to add the full games pak1.pak and pak2.pak to the baseq2 folder, if you happen to have those files available).

You, sir, are a national treasure.  Your instructions worked flawlessly, and after creating the link in 'games,' I was even able to link the icon.  Good as new!  So, big thanks everyone, and a tip o' the hat to Vato!

I'll give the broken releases a look whenever I get the time, and then issues will be retconned for good.

awesome you got it going Timepilot2084, glad i could help =D i hope atariHERO has the same results.

thanks for looking into it, johhnyonflame =) /me <3's dem fps games!
maybe you could fix the flashing icon at the bottom center of the screen, too?

..although that can be finagled as well, thanks to vonzippenstein's work-around information.
One issue that I worked around was the "Computer Update" on Quake 2 that requires you to hit F1 and get mission info. If you don't acknowledge it there will be a flashing computer icon at the bottom the whole game. Couldn't figure out how to work in a button for that so I opened the pak0.pak file, found the image "i_help.pcx", and cleared it out with pure white, which comes up transparent in game.

i found a free program called PakExplorer which allowed me to extract/re-insert the i_help.pcx file. the file is located in pak0.pak/pics.

personally, i used GIMP2 to modify i_help.pcx be transparent.
FYI, the default transparency color wasn't pure white, but an odd brick red color(#9f5b53).

anyhow, good luck!

This great loophole also works for other games that aren't booting on the new firmware. Got Descent 2 and Streets of Rage Remake running using the same technique (haven't tried any others yet but I'd imagine the results would be similar).

didn't work for me...
i have a gcw special edition with the brick firmware and latest firmware installed.
i've followed step by step and nothing, just boots to gmenu
i've tried deleting the .quake folder, the opk, adding the link in other sections
it's a user error?

gustavolatil, the only thing i can think of is to be sure to specifically choose sdlquake2 (not quake2).

This worked great, and it also worked for :

Shadow Warrior
Chocolate Doom (if you add the correct wads in the folder, Doom II, Plutonia... all works fine  ;D)

Thanks a lot for this trick  ;)

pickle.gp2x.de/gcw/quake2.zip

this is a preliminary build from a while ago, dont use if your not familiar with setting up quake2 and running it.
