Endless runners?
« on: May 14, 2015, 02:42:46 am »
Is there any interest in an endless runner game (e.g. Canabalt)?

I don't think there is one currently; the closest might be hocoslamfy. Endless runners tend to be a bit different, more about fast reaction than precise timing.

As far as I know, most endless runners are for mobile or browser, so there isn't one we can easily port to GCW Zero, meaning we'd have to write one from scratch, but it's a very simple genre so it shouldn't take too much effort. I'd be interested in working on one if there's more interest, say one or two more people contributing.

Also, if we were to make one, I think we can take advantage of the extra buttons and make a more complex game. One example would be the "challenge" levels in Rayman, where in addition to jumping, you can melee attack and operate switches:

The lexibook arcade center has an endless runner, and im sure that is Linux. It shouldn't be too hard to port even an android endless runner. We could also create our own for the GCW. We could implement multiplayer races on the GCW through wifi or some other way as well as online play.

While perhaps not "endless" (has levels), there is already one runner game ported to GCW Zero - Sienna: http://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-development/sienna/
