Can RPG Maker games be run?
« on: September 12, 2013, 01:37:07 am »
I do work in RPG Maker VX Ace from time to time, and I was wondering if it was possible for me to load up any of the projects I've done (or any of the other fantastic games others have made) onto the GCW.  The program runs natively on Windows, so I'm guessing that that might be a barrier.

I don't have any experience with devices like the GCW Zero, and I don't have one yet (it's in the mail right now).  I just thought I'd go ahead and ask now.

Thank you very much.

No sources = no port from the community

If people want RPG Maker on a non-windows system they have to convince the original developers of RPG Maker to make a port for that system. If they are not interested the only option left is rewriting RPG Maker's engine from scratch to support RPG Maker projects and probably noone would do something like that.

EasyRPG is an open source engine for playing back and editing RPG Maker 2000/2003 games. It might be possible to port the player, though its incomplete. I am now sure how many games would end up being playable.

EDIT: According to the EasyRPG forums there is a Dingoo port somewhere already..

Funny that you'd post that right now.  I just found this: https://easy-rpg.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27.  Is this where you got the information from?  If not, can you please post the link?  Thanks.

That is exactly what I was reading when I mentioned a Dingoo port.

So I'm an embedded linux developer. I'm getting my Zero today. I found the sources to EasyRPG here https://github.com/EasyRPG/  . Once I get my Zero and become familiar with it, I'll set up a VM with the tool chain and look into porting the EasyRPG Player which allows to play games created with RPG Maker 2000 and 2003.

Any particular game I should try while trying all of this?

Stay tuned.

So I got my Zero yesterday. REAL nice, no button or d-pad issues. I set up my VM and toolchain and began porting things. Moving along. Nothing to show yet. My wife should be busy this weekend so I may get some "me time" to spend on this.

I was working on this some time ago, but I always gave up due to some silly mistakes. Today, I finally got some results.

You can follow the entire history of the EasyRPG on Dingoo/GCW0 here:

If people want RPG Maker on a non-windows system they have to convince the original developers of RPG Maker to make a port for that system.

They have made ports for non-windows systems. Specifically, Nintendo and Sony systems.

But while there's plenty of games made on the Playstation versions to be found on the web, I haven't found any made with the SNES/GB versions...
My machines:
GBC,GBA,GBA SP,NDS,NGPC,Panasonic FZ-10 3DO,NES,Sega Nomad,Sega CDX w/Power Base Converter,PS1,PS2,PS3,Saturn,Dreamcast,PC (Win 98, XP, 7),Dingoo A320,Dingoo A330,Gemei A330,LetCool N350JP,PAP-GAMETA,GCW-Zero SE,Kyocera Rise,2DS,GP2X-F100,GPD G7,JXD 100,JXD A1000,JXD A3300,JXD F3000,JXD V5000,JXD S7300B,Hyperkin SupaBoy

Currently playing: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call (2DS)
