what apps do you want?
« on: June 16, 2014, 04:01:12 am »
I have a friend fishing for app/program ideas that aren't emulators. OK fine I'm fishing for them so they have some smaller goals other than 'build a game'.

Dice rollers? Gamer card? Some totally non gaming related thing? What do you think the zero could use? You know that moment where you realize you want thing but already have the zero? I want to know what that is for people.

I'd love a nice Calibre clone...  full-featured ebook reader?

A random generator.

You'd enter a list of items or have it scan a folder on your Zero and pick an item at random (or both).

The idea being if you want to pick a random game to play, the generator would pick it for you.

A friend made one for the PC a while ago but the bum never made all the adjustments I wanted.  Here's two links so you can have a rough idea of what I'm talking about.

With Twilight Zone episodes: http://host-a.net/u/dpa09/SERLiNG_TwilightZone.rar
A Magic Eight answer variant: http://host-a.net/u/dpa09/SERLiNG-MagicFlatScreenTV.rar

Dumb but I found it amusing and I'd like to see something like that on the Zero especially given the large number of games it can play.

2nding this. Would also like an ebook reader with voice synthesis, for when your eyes get tired.  8)

This too. I was considering making a request for some emulators to include a "Load a random ROM" feature into their file selectors, but since most are moving towards using the Gmenu file selector that might not work..

DPA09's idea could be even better because you could make lists to randomly select from across multiple platforms. Say you're in the mood for a shmup, the random generator could make a suggestion from a list including Recca (NES), Axelay (SNES), Whip Rush (Genesis), Progear (CPS-2), Tyrian (OpenDingux), etc. With the Zero's multimedia capabilities, you could even make lists including your music, videos, radio stations...

A graphic editor/creator, or music tracker? There are some from legacy Dingux that could be ported, or used as a launchpad for a new app. A flipbook animation maker, or something Mario Paint-like.

How about an app that lets the user write their own programs? Seeing things like Petit Computer in Nintendo's eShop makes my Zero jealous... GCW-BASIC, please?
My machines:
GBC,GBA,GBA SP,NDS,NGPC,Panasonic FZ-10 3DO,NES,Sega Nomad,Sega CDX w/Power Base Converter,PS1,PS2,PS3,Saturn,Dreamcast,PC (Win 98, XP, 7),Dingoo A320,Dingoo A330,Gemei A330,LetCool N350JP,PAP-GAMETA,GCW-Zero SE,Kyocera Rise,2DS,GP2X-F100,GPD G7,JXD 100,JXD A1000,JXD A3300,JXD F3000,JXD V5000,JXD S7300B,Hyperkin SupaBoy

This may sound ridiculous but I'd like to have a simple program to keep track of high scores.

Sort of like a text file but jazzed up.

The program would let you keep track of the following:
- name of the game
- version of the game (arcade, Gameboy, SNES, etc.)
- name of the person with the score
- date
- score

The program could link to your screenshots folder and when you get a high score you like in a game you take a snapshot, then when you're in the high score program, you can view the image and maybe save it to a folder within the high score program.

I know you can just keep track of that sort of stuff with a pencil and paper but I think it would be fun to have a program that does it.

An USB TV-Tuner application.
An aircrack-ng port.
Must the answer be realistic?

A PS1 emulator is sorely lacking. Maybe more roguelikes. Two things I would like to see on GCW Zero.

Besides that, most systems already have a top notch emulator on the Zero.

I have a graphical nethack port ready, but can't release it before I sort out the license issues (the port is based on GP2X version of the game, which provides data files in a pre-built binary form only, while the Nethack license requires that all the modified parts of the program shall have a source code provided to them. The data files are modified, unfortunatelly and the port won't work with vanilla nethack data files).
They essencially violate this part of the license:
Quote
You may copy and distribute NetHack (or a portion or derivative of it, under Paragraph 2) in object code or executable form under the terms of Paragraphs 1 and 2 above provided that you also do one of the following:

a) accompany it with the complete machine-readable source code, which must be distributed under the terms of Paragraphs 1 and 2 above; or,

b) accompany it with full information as to how to obtain the complete machine-readable source code from an appropriate archive site. (This alternative is allowed only for noncommercial distribution.)

For these purposes, complete source code means either the full source distribution as originally released over Usenet or updated copies of the files in this distribution used to create the object code or executable.

And yes, Nethack's data files are generated from source files, thus falling under the source code license.

A help with extracting the data files, inspecting them and seeing whether they can be deconstructed to source form would be appreciated.

Here's a couple screenshots from the port:

Web browser?

Maybe try this? Needs a virtual keyboard but I don't mind working it if there's any interest.
