Daphne (WIP)
« on: March 25, 2015, 12:49:39 am »
This is to show progress on the Daphne laserdisc emulator to avoid cluttering up the emulator requests thread.

Currently I've only got a few screenshots as I only got it working a few minutes ago ;)

Initial testing shows sound working, video working and controls working. It's still a developmental build requiring telnet to run but it definitely works :D

Framerate is playable with no skipping observed so far.

oh wow :) this is indeed great news!  testing out some astron belt eh?  i'd like to know how bega's battle runs the gameplay itself shouldn't be too intensive i wouldn't think.  extremely interested to see the progress for this i'm curious to know what other games get tested as well, thanks david ;)

Saaaahweeeeet! This emulator wasn't even on my radar. Playing Dragons Lair & Space Ace riding the Train to work would be pretty awesome.

Thank you so much.

Just a small update.

Daphne is packaged and tweaked but I'm currently having fun setting up the rom loader.

Daphne requires a number of files to run for each rom, I use astron as an example:
Romfile  (astron.zip)
Videofile (astron.m2v)
Audiofile (astron.ogg)
Framefile (astron.txt)
Datafile (astron.dat - autogenerated on first run)

For the time being I'm going to use the gMenu rom selector to choose the .zip file, Daphne will assume everything is in this folder.

For testing I'm using Astron with video encoded at  512x480 @ 8000 kb/s. The video's will need to be re-encoded to 320x240 resolution to minimise frame skipping. Here's a nice thread which explains how to do it.

The same thread suggests using a class 10 sdcard for optimal speed. I'm testing on a class 4.

So expect a developmental release very soon ;)

Here's some Bega screenshots, it plays but it's skipping with 640x480 @ 10000kb/s using a Class 4 card.

did a little testing and got dragon's lair working thanks to david ;)

game runs pretty good for the most part i think about 30fps but certain scenes theres stuttering here and there.  also when taking snapshots theres significant slowdown.  it'll probably be better once i convert the video file to 320x240.  expect good news sometime soon, theres still some optimizing needed.  exciting times!

I remember when my uncle got me Dragons Lair for Christmas. It was the Sega CD Version and it was the second FMV game I played. I couldn't get past the bridge. I would just see the character drown by some tentacle. I didn't know when to push the buttons. It felt so random. Sometimes when I did get past the tentacle by pure luck I would die instantly by the second obstacle. Such an annoying game.

I'm looking forward to this because I never could get Daphne running on my PC (video card issues)

The nostalgia factor of playing Dragon's Lair and Space Ace alone is pretty exciting to me. I used to dump a boat load of quarters into the arcade machine to finish them. I think I still remember some of the patterns.

tekkaman> the game is basically a series of animated sequences. You press the right button at the right time and you go on. Press the wrong button/direction or at the wrong time and you die. The only way to get good at the game was through memorization. There were some hints on screen (flashing objects at times) but those were pretty vague.

It was more a novelty when it came out because it was a laserdisc game with art done by Don Bluth and looked unbelievable when it came out in the 80s. It was an early example of graphics over gameplay, though.
