Title: Atari 7800 port [CLOSED]
Post by: ker on May 01, 2014, 03:06:08 pm
dingux-7800 port to GCW0

- Recompiled with GCW0 toolchain
- Deleted all copyrighted stuff and added new PNGs (thanks again @Gab1975 ;-)
- Removed chipset and cpu references
- Removed not necessary menu options (volume, clock frequency, ...)
- Moved config/data to $HOME folder (bios can be saved at $HOME/.atari-7800/bios/ folder)
- Created OPK

Download: http://www.mediafire.com/download/astadlxdkfxfkfd/dingux-7800.opk

Feedback and advices are welcome. Enjoy!

Note: There is another Atari 7800 emulator already ported. You can download it from http://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-releases/prosystem-v1-1/. I found it when this port was already done  :'(

I have looked at this new port... the emulator seems to be incompatible with PAL games (I tried various PAL games and it's always the same thing, the initial Atari logo holds steady)... otherwise the compatibility with NTSC games is quite good... ;)

The sound playback is a little crackly (similarly to the first release of Dingux-Caprice)

Thanks Ker... you are a "maker-machine" ! :P

I've been looking at code. There's no PAL support on this emulator. I've been searching different sources of original emulator (ProSystem is the name) and I've found some code that shows some kind of compatibilty (at least in theory). I've tried to merge source codes and now PAL games doesn't freeze but are not playable.

console with 58 games only came in 9 minus PAL version
(rumor has it the worst game in the history of Atari)

Well, in the US, the 7800 was out for almost a year before the NES hit our shores.  Also, it had better resolution (7800's 320x240 vs NES's 256x240).  The NES also cost $60 more.  That being said, the NES has far better third party support, and better sound.

The 7800 still has the better version of Xenophobe, though -- the NES one is pretty bad.

After all, I think that for this emulator the PAL compatibility isn't very important (among other things, the video resolution of the NTSC console is perfect for the GCW0 LCD, 320x240px, while the video resolution of PAL console is a bit too high, 320x288px)... maybe try to increase the sound quality is a most important task...
in any case, thanks for your work! :)

I've updated OPK. Now last rom path is saved in config file. I've been playing with sound configuration but I don't find a nice combination.

I'll upload source code to GitHub and publish it at releases forum. Perhaps someone with better skills can tune up it...  :(

I've just tried ProSystem emulator port (http://boards.dingoonity.org/gcw-releases/prosystem-v1-1/). @alekmaul work is fantastic. My port has no sense. I'll stop it here and now.

In my opinion, a coder work is never a "no sense"... of course, this emulator needs some optimizations, but it's no bad... besides, it could be a way to increase your coder skill ! ;)

Thanks for your support, but I think is better to spend time in something useful
