Title: Announcing new, completely redesigned 3D printed DPAD and ABXY buttons
Post by: gcw on December 23, 2015, 05:17:12 am
We are really excited to be announcing new, completely redesigned 3D printed DPAD and ABXY buttons, available right now in numerous different colors on our Official GCW Store Page at https://www.shapeways.com/shops/gcw-zero. For an article discussing all the specific improvements we've made to our DPAD and ABXY buttons you can visit http://www.gcw-zero.com/news.php?id=16

Over the last few years, a lot of behind the scenes research and development has been done to improve the buttons of the GCW-Zero. Our Industrial Design team has obsessed over the smallest details in design of the buttons and tested many different prototypes to give them a complete redesign and make sure they are the best they can be.

Now that we?re offering a bunch of new colors, we want to see who comes up with the coolest custom Zero! Our 3D printing store is a great way for us to research and develop new hardware designs and get them out to you as quickly as possible. Your interest in future developments keeps us going!

Great! buyed! The buttons don't have the letters? (A, B,X,Y)

The button text was intentionally removed to allow you to use any button in any location. This avoids any confusion between console manufacturer's existing button settings. Another reason is that it makes the 3D print ordering process much simpler, this way you can move the buttons around later if you like them in a different spot without having to worry about button text.

 This is really cool!
However, does the D pad NOT come in black?!
If at all, I would just like to replace/upgrade but keep the color scheme same. I didn't see a black option for the D pad or buttons!
Thanks for any reply

Black is not available in polished form, therefore it is not available at the Shapeways store. New colors can always be added later on if Shapeways decides to make them available.

It was actually available before the article went live. So this also forced us to update the templates included in the article.

If there is a new batch, don't expect new buttons any time soon. These 3D printed buttons are intended for gauging interest. Making button moulds is going to take a lot of time and money.

I thought the new batches came with improved buttons.
Not the new ones announced here but just better than the older batches.
Thought I had read that somewhere here before.

Thanks for the replies. Does this mean the gcw zero units on sale now no longer have the sticky button problems?

Could you pls update this thread about how the 'upgrade' process went and about how the new buttons feel like, once you have received your order? I am interested in the button kit as well, but like to hear some more real life opinions before I buy.

Many thanks!

They shouldn't have any problems. If they do, I would send it back. But chances are slim that any of the new batches have any problems with them.
I wouldn't let this withhold me from buying the unit, if that's what you mean.

I do actually have a new unit which I bought from a reputable member of this community a while ago, so it may have the sticky button problems. I have never used it but might still sell it for one of the newer units.

Ok, the new buttons are placed :).

I try to explain myself (my english is very bad, sorry).

New buttons feels good, rugged touch are a right guess. I play for two hours and i'm happy with the result achieved, but is not perfect.

The problem is with the Pad, It's improved too much...but I have little problems with the left direction (sticky, sometimes it does not work well). BUT, the problem may be the plastic membrane...I don't know.

Overall recommended, I'm happy with the change.

@gcw   Will the color black become available for the buttons and D pads in the near future? I'd really love to do this upgrade but keep the same color scheme. Thank you! And thank you so much for all of your hard work behind the scenes!

Thanks! Buyed! ;D I don't know if the new membrane fix this, but I'll try.

It's a shame that the console didn't come with good control from the first day :(

Thanks @TimeDevouncer for the photos!

I think I will go for it too, even though I am like other users who would prefer black buttons and D-Pad.

Might be a stupid question, but what did you mean with "membrane"? What is it for and do I need it in order to exchange the new buttons?

Sorry, i don't know the name of this plastic:

Mine is slightly broken...Maybe it's that the problem, I doubt it, but I 'll try.

EDIT

MegamanX finished. I'm happy with the new dpad and buttons, but i feel the buttons a little small for action games. Or maybe I have fat fingers ;D

@TimeDevouncer  do you prefer/like the new Dpad better then the Game Boy D pad? I see that you had a purple game boy D pad before exchanging for the new one.  Would love to know if you actually recommend the game boy D pad over the new GCW Dpad that you just bought --pictured here. Thank you so much!

And thank you so much for the post/pictures!

Fmmm, If I had to rate the Dpads, I give this scores:

- Original --> 5/10
- Game Boy Pad --> 7/10
- New DPad --> 8/10

I'm curious to know if the new membrane you ordered is of better quality.

Me too, when I receive it I make tests and put the results in this post.

Can anyone give any insight on the colors?  Does the red match the lettering on the front of the zero (or is it lighter)?
Does the metallic match the outside trim of the console, or is it darker?

Thanks!

@Warrior  if you look carefully at the pictures on the page before this, it seems that the red D pad is a brighter colored red than the actual GCW zero writing on the bezel. I can't comment on the metallic though, because that seems like something I would need to see in person.

Exactly.  I saw the pictures on the previous page and came to the same conclusion.  I was hoping someone that has physically seen these colors could confirm the color difference, possibly suggest the "best" looking colors in their opinion, or provide some clearer installed photos before I order.

Thanks!

If it's not the typical sticky button issue, then like you said it's probably extreme wear on the original membrane/conductive. Hopefully if you replace that all will be well. Please keep us posted and let us know ! I hope it gets fixed and you're back in business soon! :)

I recently ordered the replacement buttons, opting to go for the same blue d-pad and Super Famicom face buttons as the press release pictures.

Although I found someone else to help install the buttons for me, installation was not too difficult and the end result is wonderful.

Aside from simply looking snazzy, the controls are much much more responsive and comfortable than before.
The d-pad membrane didn't need replacing or anything, using the same part all kinds of SNES, NES, Gameboy and Megadrive games I enjoy playing are far more enjoyable now, and I'm finally getting a lot of use out of the device compared to the past year or so since I got it.

Really, really happy with it.

Dude! THANK YOU  so much for the update and photos! It really helps me in my decision to modify my zero as opposed to just upgrading to these buttons/D pads.
Earlier in this thread someone gave it a rating like this:
- Original --> 5/10
- Game Boy Pad --> 7/10
- New DPad --> 8/10
Also, buttons are a better feel, but too small For me overall.
**************************************************

You say that you're very happy overall with the upgrades, but can you chime in using this same d-pad rating scale as he did? And what would you say specifically about the buttons (good and bad)? Thank you so much!!! @RupeeClock

It's overall a great deal better.
Although I did get some replica Game Boy DMG d-pad and buttons before, I never got around to installing them unfortunately.

So before the d-pad was squeaky and unresponsive. I had tried the silicone grease treatment but it only helped marginally. The face buttons for quite a while would snap against the casing, making it difficult to press them in especially when pressing multiple buttons simultaneously. This was most prominent with the A button, although eventually this stopped.
One of the most aggressively annoying problems with the d-pad was how it wouldn't register pressing down properly, if you try making a quarter-circle motion from left or right. It actually made it very difficult to play some games, even things like Tetris as the Tetromino would fly off in the wrong direction whilst trying to drop the piece.

After the d-pad and face button mod, I don't get any such problems like this any longer.
The same membranes are being used, but where the buttons are solid, slightly taller as to be less flush fit, and marginally more narrow, everything is perfectly responsive.
As the d-pad is concerned the pivot is comfortable. It can take slightly more effort to do a quarter-circle motion than some other d-pads but it does register correctly.
I like to throw Tetris DX sessions at controllers or devices to see how they shape up, and these 3D printed buttons are absolutely up to the job.

I would've said that before the original d-pad was unacceptable. Whilst the new d-pad is not perfect, it's actually pretty great and more than adequate for my gaming needs.
The face buttons are also good, they are a little small but nothing I have any difficulty using in the heat of gaming.
I've seen that some people opt to enlarge the button holes and install larger face buttons, but simply having less flush-fit buttons is sufficient.

Thank you! Fantastic summary! Really appreciate your opinions and knowledge! Maybe not on the same rating scale in comparison to other mods for the D pad on the GCW zero, but what would you still rate the D Pad & buttons  on a scale 1-10?

Buttons: 1-10
Dpad: 1-10

Thanks again so much.
I play more action games like MegaMan's and shooters, however your descriptions were very helpful. The problem with my D pad isn't necessarily sticking either, it's almost that it sits to low and doesn't register nearly as well   In comparison to my favorite controllers, without at least trying hard to do so. A bit too loose as well.

Keeping in mind that my system was a Kickstarter launch model.

Original Buttons: 6/10
Original D-pad 4/10

3D printed Buttons: 8/10
3D printed D-pad: 8/10

I gave Rockman 4 Minus Infinity a quick test-drive on FCEUX. I miss having the option to map player 2 buttons to the shoulder buttons, which is used for quick weapon switching, but it's otherwise more than up to the job of playing it.
Dunno if the heatwave effect in Pharaoh Man's stage works properly though.

Thank you thank you thank you! Much appreciated

@RupeeClock  and thank you for being very honest on the original D pad/buttons 1 to 10 point scale. I thought I was crazy Or the only one that thought the D pad was about 4/10 as well. So I feel that we're on the same page  and trust your opinion even more so!
I don't have any sticking issues with the D pad, I just still feel that it's a 4/10. Also, sorry last question:

- are the buttons and D pad less "hollow" feeling? I hope that makes sense. That's something that really bothers me about the originals as well.

The original d-pad and buttons are in fact hollow.

The 3D printed replacement parts are completely solid however, they're nice and solid and don't feel floaty.

Really cool looking, but to achieve this SFC button theme, you must have bought 4 sets of unique color, am I right?

That's right, each button color is sold separately.

Due to the 3D printing process where you make something layer by layer, but not being able to specify the print orientation during production, they print the buttons out in a shape that makes sure at one button will be printed in the correct orientation.

In the case of the d-pad, which part is in the right or wrong orientation is pretty obvious. In the case of the face buttons though to be honest the buttons are indistinguishable, I couldn't tell which one was printed which way up or sideways.
So I think you could get away with ordering two colors and using every button shipped, if you wanted to just use two colors for A/B and X/Y.

Thinking about placing an order for these, considering the positive feedback so far. Can anyone who has received the parts give feedback on how well the material would accept paint or ink? I would like for the buttons to have the letters on them instead of being blank.

I am assuming it might not really work well, but in that case I would be fine leaving them blank.

Ordered my set recently.  Waiting for it to arrive, but I'll post some pictures once I have it in-hand and installed.

The CAD is really suffering right now though. This better be a significant upgrade, by the sounds of what you guys have been experiencing, 'cause $47 for these parts was a tough pill to swallow.

Unfortunately, I don't really have a decent camera to make videos, but I can take some photos and write my thoughts down.

I also ended up ordering these switches (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/321143324965) for the Start and Select buttons because I can't stand how insanely loud the current ones are. Especially when lot of GCW software relies on pressing both at the same time, it's especially annoying for night-time bed play when the Mrs. is laying beside me.  I'm hoping these will be quieter, and if that fails I'll try to dampen the buttons somehow.  Figured if I'm upgrading the other buttons I might as well try to tackle the Start and Select ones.

Went with the White/Red Combo.
Buttons feel, play, and look great.

Any chance we could get new start/select buttons???

A word of caution, as others have noted, be VERY careful when opening the case and extracting the motherboard...
The wires are very fragile.
The power toggle is very fragile.  It is a very tiny plastic lever, and (take it from me) it snaps before you even realize it.
Make sure you lift the board out at an angle to avoid snapping it.

If you do snap it, the psp 1000/2000/3000 replacement switch is an exact match.
If only the plastic tab snaps, just pop the metal cover and replace the plastic part, no need to desolder/resolder new switch.

Looks good, that was the exact combo I was planning on getting myself. It reflects the color scheme of the logo so it gives the look a little credibility, like it might have been intended to be that way all along.

I'll have to place an order now :P

What would you give the buttons and D pad separately on a scale from 1 to 10? ( in comparison to the others/originals)

Ha ha, sorry I'm trying to create a scale for everyone to measure up the new ones in comparison to the old ones. Thanks for the pictures and the information! It looks fantastic!

Thanks! I really like them.
If I had to quantify them..
D-Pad: 8.5/10
Buttons: 8.5/10

My GCW-0 came with the second iteration of "fixed" buttons, so that's what I have to compare to.
These buttons are a lot more rigid and tactile than the OEM buttons; a definite improvement.

If you are on the fence about these, order them.  You will not be disappointed.
Just make sure you are willing to read up on the dis-assembly procedure, and take your time! :)

Here's to hoping for 3-d printed start/select buttons!

My new buttons and d-pad arrived today, I took a risk and only ordered two sets of the buttons, hoping that I would be able to use all four. Looking at them, it is hard to see much of a difference (though you can see which ones were printed sideways if you look close enough), so I am hopeful that they will work well once installed. The quality of the 3d print is very nice, and much better than what I am used to seeing.

I am waiting until the weekend to install, because I am nervous about breaking the power slider and I don't want to rush. I will report back, hopefully with pictures of my new, improved (and not busted) zero.

Install complete, I went with the same scheme as @Warrior

I was planning on taking more pictures on the inside, but I didn't think about it until after I was done..

Anyway, the install went really well, right up until the end. I didn't have any trouble with the power slider or the shoulder buttons. When I was trying to put the rumble motor back into it slot on the back, I slipped and broke one of the wires off right where it connects to the motor. I'm kind of bummed that I managed to mess that up, even though rumble isn't being used much right now for anything. Anyone know where I can find a replacement?

I will report back, hopefully with pictures of my new, improved (and not busted) zero.

If something isn't broken when you try to "fix" it, it will be afterwards. I've always had bad luck with that.

Now for the rating system:

D-pad: old (5/10), new (8/10)
This is a good improvement, and I don't think I will need silicone grease anymore. The action is not as sloppy anymore, and direction presses feel a lot more precise.  :D The d-pad is definitely worth upgrading.

Buttons: old(7/10), new(7/10)
To be honest, I never had an issue with my buttons, and I don't really notice an improvement with these either. For this one,  I would say you don't need these unless you want them for style. As I mentioned before, I also only bought two sets of these replacements and used both buttons from each set. They all work great and I see no reason why you shouldn't do this if you are only going with 1 or 2 colors. You can't see the difference unless you look really closely (and I mean inches/centimeters from your face), but why would you do that when you can be playing games?

Sorry to hear about the rumble motor.  Those wires are super flaky.  Both of my shoulder buttons had the wires disconnect during install.  Are you sure you can't just solder the wire back on the rumble motor?  The shoulder button wires were simple enough to re-attach.

Kudos on the color scheme. :)

Unfortunately, the wire broke off at the motor end, so I don't think I will be able to reattach it. There isn't any wire left coming out the motor, and there aren't any metal surfaces on the motor itself to attach to. I think it pulled apart right at the white piece plastic that makes up the base of the motor.

Sorry for the blurry photo, but you can kind of see it here. The blue wire is broken off.

@thefifthgiant  looks really good! Thanks for the information and photos! So sorry about the rumble motor :(

Surprised you gave both the OLD and new buttons a 7/10 ...I would think the fact that they aren't hollow like the old ones would give it an overall better feel to Percision as you play. Hmm

To be fair, I haven't played with them too long, so it's possible I might change my mind. I was mostly just testing them for rubbing and "spring" action, because that was the main problem with the d-pad. In this regard, I felt that the old buttons were fine as well. I know that some people had issues with the buttons though, and I imagine it might be a big improvement for those people.

The improvement on the d-pad was immediate and much more noticeable, but I guess I will have to put them through a couple of long gaming sessions to find out  ;)

Got mine installed. I went with all red buttons and d-pad.

Mine is a KS and I didn't have many problems with the buttons and d-pad before. But the new buttons feel better for sure, a lot more solid and doesn't rattle around.  It also has a softer contact when pressing down, which helps with silent playing.

The D-pad is also better, though not perfect, it still feels much more responsive now. Doing circular motions feels more fluent, and I like the grip of the material over the stock d-pad.

If we're throwing around rating numbers on this, I'd say:

Old Buttons: 7/10
Old D-pad: 4/10

New Buttons: 9/10
New D-pad: 8/10

Next I'm going to see if I can replace those start and select switches since they're super loud.  Also my L and R triggers tend to rattle around a bit too. I noticed that there is extra space in the groove they sit in, so I'm going to try to put something there that holds the triggers in place more sturdy.

My ultimate goal is to make button pressing on this unit more quiet, but the new buttons and d-pad help a lot towards that!

I just change the membranes and clean the "pins" with alcohol.

And...awesome, i think the problem are this membranes ^^.
Now, the DPad are more...?hard?, but works perfectly, much better. I'm happy with this change.

Just tossing in another opinion since the company has a free shipping deal this week.

I just replaced the d-pad myself. Gonna give a few tips first. The process was a bit more difficult than I expected. A credit card and folded post-it note worked well for removing the battery without damaging it in any way. I wasn't able to remove the power toggle in any comfortable manner and just sort of took the silver IO cover off from around it. Start on the side opposite, work your way around to the power switch itself to pull it out from under/around. Helps circumvent the entire issue with snapping the electrical part. I didn't actually disconnect the ribbon cable (couldn't find a comfortable, simple way to do this), and instead just gently lifted up the board until I could push out the original d-pad and push in the new one.

Basically, just be patient and fairly gentle with it. Make sure any force you use is well controlled.

As for my impressions, I'm feeling a bit mixed on it. I'm not too fond of the grip material - I'm sure it's because of the 3D printing process, but it feels a bit excessively rough to me. Each part of the pad feels a bit thinner than I expected as well, but that's not really a bad thing. The area where it let me down is with diagonals. They still don't register as cleanly as I would like. It seems to be getting better with repeated use, but keep in mind that it's certainly not perfect yet. I'm wondering how much of this is more an issue with the membrane and less an issue with the d-pad.

Overall, it's an improvement over the original. Due to a lack of experience, I can't really give any input on whether or not it's better than using any other d-pad such as the original Game Boy's. Here's a photo of the end result.

If numerical ratings help anyone visualize, I would say that the original d-pad was probably a 5.5, this is more a 7. Both are functional and usable to be sure, but neither are especially excellent or perfectly responsive.

I might end up replacing the buttons just for aesthetic consistency. I don't really have any issues with mine though aside from the fact that they letter printing is slightly off center on some.

Edit: Later in the day, had more time to play with it. Some of my complaints are gradually resolving themselves - I think part of the issue was that I was still approaching the new d-pad like I did the old one. Want to reiterate that it's still not perfect, but I would give it more of a 7.5-8 now. It's an improvement and was worth dropping the cash on.

Hello, first time I post here, but I've done a lot of modding on the Zero for a year or so and followed the boards here. I've done the Gameboy D-pad mod, with also the extra pad under the membrane. The extra pad is what made the controls perfect I think.

Now I tried the new buttons and D-pad (all red), and I understand some of the complains here. They are good but not perfect. Lacks a little precision. And I think placing a 1 or 2mm pad under the membrane is what is missing for the D-pads controls to be perfect. Still have to test that out with new D-pad though, but I'm pretty sure that it will be as good as it can be.

Now regarding the 4 buttons, they are a bit better but still not good enough. The problem I think is that they are too small and/or too close to each other, something that is not easily fixed. But they work all right. The only thing that always bothers me is that the buttons patterns a-b-x-y doesn't follow the Snes ones nor the Xbox ones, so it's always difficult to know which one is which, something that is now even harder to figure out on the go since there is no letters anymore.

Old D-pad: 3/10 (really unplayable especially with Shmups)
New D-pad: 7/10 (might be an 8 with extra pad under membrane)

Old buttons: 5/10
New buttons: 6/10

Now one last thing. Like some people here have noticed, I too think that the feel of the new buttons are rough to the touch, don't feel smooth enough, something that has to do with the 3D printing process with painting on top. I'm now considering buying the grey ones, as it looks like they are made with a different texture (closer to plastic) than all the others. Does someone here can confirm that they are smoother?

@arovane  hi, saw your question. I haven't had time nor the ability/tools to install my new D pad and buttons on my zero, however I have ordered  both the gray and white D pads. They both feel exactly the same to me. The gray one however is not what I expected. It has flakes of gold in it that make it look sparkly like glitter.  It's unfortunate because the color is very nice, but the glitter gold that is not removable inside of the plastic of the D pad is very offputting and annoying. It makes it look more like a toy.

HOWEVER, I did order the purple buttons. And I can for sure say that the purple buttons feel more rough than both of the white and gray D pads. So I think your best bet is to go with white or gray being the smoothest when compared to the colored buttons I ordered. Assuming that if I got a purple D pad it would also be much rougher than the white and gray Dpads I bought.

 Hope this helps !

Also,  keep us posted on what membranes we should use in order to get the best feel! I would love to know what you come up with! Thank you!

Thanks. I was about to buy the grey ones but now I know that I won't :)
I'll try the white ones then. Just hoping they won't get dirty in a second.

Yeah, it's so unfortunate about that glitter sparkle on the gray ones. Otherwise I love the color. Glad I could help!
The white ones should be a bit smoother than the colored ones.

But thanks anyway.

@care16la20  sounds really cool, but have you tried the new ones in order to compare? That sounds like a lot of work to put in if these new D pads are nearly just as good overall. Would love to hear your opinion! Thanks for the recommendation!

Also, @arovane  did you ever say that the new membranes from @ithic.com  are better than the OEM membranes that originally come with the GCW zero?  Would love to know what/which membranes are best to use for both the buttons and the Dpads before installing these new parts! Thank you so much for your help!

Don't know about the new membrane, never bought it. But I doubt there's a difference, if there is please let me know.
I was talking about the pad under membrane mod, "modifying your console for better diagonal inputs": http://wiki.surkow.com/D-Pad_Modifications

This is definitely something I can recommend you to do.

Yep, its a huge amount of work and ive had a small accident on my finger during the process; Havent tried the new dpad and have no plan to do since the GBdpad with the bottom sahved with a ironball on the middle is a winner

Ok so received and installed the white buttons and D-pads. Same feel than the red ones, and they get dirty very fast. But it looks somehow nicer all in white, with the red buttons it looked a bit like a toy to be honest.

Now, I tried to put a small plastic pad under the D-pad in order to increase diagonals, as shown on the wiki. It worked beautifully with the GameBoy pad mod last time. Well, IT DOESN'T WORK AT ALL WITH THE NEW D-PADS SO DON'T DO IT! The diagonals register very badly, and you have to press the D-pad too hard for it to work.

So yeah. Conclusion, the best feel with the D-pad is definitely the GameBoy D-pad mod with the extra pad under it. The new D-pads are ok but not as good as think.

I'm testing the 3D printed Buttons and D-Pad in my GCW Zero for a week now and unfortunately I'm not happy with them. The ABXY buttons feel good and they don't stick anymore but the D-Pad feels a bit inaccurate, which makes it difficult to play Fighting Games and Platformers. I came to the conclusion, that its the right half of the D-Pad which is giving me problems.

I made some tests with some Street Fighter Games: When I'm playing at the left side (1 Player side) It's very difficult to do ShoRyuKens and Super Hadoukens. When I'm playing at the right side (2 Player side) I can do ShoRyuKens and Super Hadoukens without any problems. Really strange...

Is here anybody who had the same problem? I will open my GCW Zero soon again to check the D-Pad. Maybe I have to replace the rubber membrane under the D-Pad?

If it's only the right half of the D-Pad which is giving you problems then it is likely for the rubber membrane to be damaged in some way (or maybe not properly aligned). Ithic used to sell replacement rubber membranes, but the website is currently down while undergoing an overhaul.

Soo today I received my Gameboy Classic rubber membranes and I modded them for my GCW Zero:

The buttons and the D-Pad feel much better and harder now with the new rubbers. but unfortunately my problems with the D-Pad aren't solved yet. It seems like the down direction of the D-Pad is having problems now (before it was the right direction). I made the Street Fighter test again and now it's nearly impossible to do Hadokens and any Quarter or Half Cycle Moves. On the other hand, I can play platformer games very well now. I tested Donkey Kong Country and some Super Mario games and it's a huge difference now to the original GCW D-Pad. The D-Pad feels nearly like an original Gameboy D-Pad and I was able to do some precious Jumps, Attacks, etc. Then I made another test with Tetris and I recognized that when I'm holding the down button to speed up the Tetris blocks they sometimes stop.

So does anyone have the same issues with the 3D printed D-Pad? What else can I try? Is there something wrong with the D-Pad? Or did I made some mistakes with the modded rubber?

Update: So after playing a while with the new D-Pad and Gameboy rubber membrane it's getting a bit better. I was able to do some Hadoken circle moves in Street Fighter, but it's still very hard to do them and most of the time I fail doing them. On the other hand I dont have any problems doing charging moves (for example Guiles Sonic Boom).

Yesterday I opened my GCW again and put back the original GCW Zero membrane under my D-Pad. And now I think everything is fine. The controls feel precious, the diagonal inputs work fine and I am also able to do Special Moves and Hadokens, Shoryukens etc in Street Fighter. The 3d printed D-Pad is still far from perfect for Street Fighter games but for most other games it's good. Overall I am happy with it now :-)

By the way: I don't recommend the original Gameboy rubber membrane for the GCW Zero D-Pad. The inputs feel too hard with it and I also got problems with diagonal directions. But it's good enough to use it for the GCW Zero Buttons. The buttons feel really good with it.

That's interesting; according to their forums https://www.shapeways.com/forum/t/water-and-coloured-strong-and-flexible-plastic.54565/ the material (strong and flexible plastic) has a problem with fading colours from water and wear. Perhaps a different material should have been used? Someone also suggested lacquering it first.

I have some doubts about this lacquering so i will make some questions:

?Do i need to brush every 6 months lacquiring the 3d printed for the GCW Zero or perhaps its permanent?

?Where i can find a good Lacquering to my 3d parts to my GCW Zero?

Thats all the questions i need,Thank you so much and waiting for you reply.

I really, really, really wanted to get new buttons for the Zero on the Neo Geo colors (red, yellow, green, and blue).  After playing King of Fighters so many times on my Zero the buttons are currently sticking.  However, after reading last night that the buttons get discolored from use, I placed an order this morning for the D-pad, the action buttons, the analog controller, and the start and select buttons, all in white.  If I'm going with the white look I might as well get everything.  I will let you guys know once the order arrives and I install them.

The Shapeways controllers and buttons for the Zero arrived yesterday.  I installed them this morning... and I broke my Zero.  I broke all four cables that go from the battery to the motherboard, so the console no longer turns on.  I don't know how to solder, so unless somebody is willing for fix my Zero for me, I no longer have a Zero.  Send me an instant message if you are willing to help.

Two things: I will no longer try to fix any portable electronic devices.  They are too small.  I broke my sister's iPhone when I tried to fix it, and I broke my GCW Zero when I tried to fix it.  I will continue to fix desktop computers if necessary.

And I am not getting another Zero.  I loved my Zero while it worked.  However, eventually the buttons started sticking.  That means King of Fighters was unplayable.  I would've had to open it up to fix that problem, Shapeways or no Shapeways.  I consider that problem with the Zero's buttons a manufacturer's defect, so I will either take my chances with an Android portable open source gaming device or I will stop playing old emulated games on the go.  These games are not meant to be played with a touch screen, so a device with physical buttons is a must.

Everything can be repaired - especially a few broken wires. There's a few people around who have the skills to help you out. Now the wires are broken it is best to replace them with JST connectors.
