Title: Rockbot 1.1.0
Post by: protomank on March 31, 2013, 08:01:36 pm
Hello friends, after a long time, I have the pleasure to announce a new version of the classic Megaman-style game, Rockbot for Dingux. This version is a big improvement over previous beta, and should be finishable from start without major issues.

Get here http://rockbot.upperland.net/ and if you find any relevant problems, please tell me.

About a native version: the native SDK support to C++ is really poor, so, unless it chances (any clues?), I won't be able to port it for native, sadly :-(

Hey Dingoo pals! I released a new version, beta 6 at http://rockbot.upperland.net including Dingux port.
This is a highly improved version over beta4 and beta5, as we are reaching the final 1.0 release and several bad bugs and issues were squashed.

Any feedback or critics are welcome :)

Still no luck to run Rockbot on a Dingoo A-380.  :(

What version of Dingux are you using? In witch folder did you placed the game files?
Never saw such error, but I'm running a Dingux that is a bit outdated as well as the SDK I use to build.
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0 RC1
Post by: Alien Grey on January 15, 2014, 08:41:47 pm
Legacy Dingux with kernel 2.6.32.
I keep the files in the Rockbot folder and copy them to the game folder to a MicroSD card.

I can get V1.0 beta 6 to run but it crashes after the intro.

What is the log in beta6?
If you are willing to, I can send you the game binary with some debug, so we can locate the problem.

I have two devices one with OpenDingux and another with the old one, and both are working fine. I'm placing the game in /home/games/Rockbot
It should contain the folder "data" witch by its turn, will have "fonts", "images", "music" and "sfx" folder and "game_v212.dat", "stages_v212.dat" files.

I don't have a log file for V1.0 Beta 6 but I can make one if you need it.

You can send me a binary to debug if you want to try to find the problem.

Edit:

Rockbot V1.0 Beta 6 log file.

Code: [Select]
main - argvString: './rockbot.dge', FILEPATH: './'

Post by: protomank on January 15, 2014, 10:00:52 pm
Ouch, segfault is a problem, it shouldn't :-/
I'll run some tests on my Dingoos to see if I am able to reproduce.
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0 RC1
Post by: protomank on January 16, 2014, 01:29:23 am
One question: did you had an older version of Rockbot and copied the files over it, by any chance?
The only reason I see for the crash is having a old save or config file that changed format. Tested in my two Dingoos without any problems and Dingux is the platform I had less problems so far.
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0 RC1
Post by: Alien Grey on January 16, 2014, 07:00:50 am
No. I didn't copy the files to an older version of Rockbot.
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0 RC1

Well, I don't know what is the problem, could not reproduce it. :-(
Can you point me to the version of Dingux you are using? Otherwise, only if you zip the whole contents of the SDCard/Dingux for me to try it out on my device.

It isn't possible to use the Dingoo A-380 dingux on a Dingoo A320.

Well, that makes things harder as I do not own one :)

hm... crashes after the first cutscene... then freezes my a320... any ideas what wrong? looking forward to this. anyone else experiencing  anything?
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0
Post by: protomank on March 17, 2014, 02:32:13 pm
Hello. I tested in two A320 I own, but both are running OpenDingux, not the older Dingux version, can you tell me witch Dingux version are you using? So I can install it on one of the A320 I have and test it.

That I could guess, it can be a permission problem (it does need write rights to the folder in order to record config and save), where did you placed rockbot? I am using /local/games lately.
Also, there should be a file called stdout.txt inside the rockbot folder, that maybe have clues.

If none is a problem, I can send you a different build, or you can also check if previous version (RC1) available in the site runs in your device.
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0
Post by: protomank on March 17, 2014, 03:17:07 pm
All right, I was able to reproduce the freezing after installing the Dingux instead of OpenDingux on my black (ther other one is white) Dingoo.

I'll try to figure out what is wrong (have no idea) and release an updated version as soon as I fix it.

Hey ya I downloaded local pack from bottom of page here
http://boards.dingoonity.org/dingux-releases/minimal-local-pack/ other dingux games and they work fine.

I put rockbot in sdcard local/games/..... Like I said starts up and does the cutscenes, then goes back to menu and dingoo is froze until I reboot it

Found the stdout file here's what it say
main - argvString: '/boot/local/games/Rockbot/rockbot.dge', FILEPATH: '/boot/local/games/Rockbot/'

WARNING: Could not read config file '/boot/local/games/Rockbot//config_v212.sav'.

I've already found the problem: old Dingux have a problem with C++ ifstream function. Its not a big problem for me, as I can easily rewrite using ANSI-C fopen, but it amuses me, as it is a really serious problem in Dingux itself.
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0

Check my prev post. I found the file u asked for
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0
Post by: protomank on March 17, 2014, 03:38:15 pm
Yeah, it does not contain any useful info. I've fixed the ifstream problem, but there is another one. I'm having to use a in-game debug output because Dingux isn't fluashing data for the stdout file, so it takes a bit longer to find issues :-/
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0
Post by: Fluxchar on March 17, 2014, 03:59:02 pm
Hey that's fine. I'm not nearly as good at this as you as I have no experience in this field. Just basic knowledge where to put files and games. That's it. So I guess you'll be posting another version?
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0
Post by: protomank on March 17, 2014, 04:25:35 pm
Yes. I'll execute some tests (not a complete one, but will make sure stages can be finished and ending works) then upload. I'm close to find/fix the issue, seems... ilogic! Getting a crash in adding an item to a list.. very odd.
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0
Post by: protomank on March 17, 2014, 05:42:08 pm
There you go. I replaced the C++ ifstream by old C fopen and C++ std::list for std::vector and changed some parts of the code to remove items from back instead of front... didn't tested the whole game (I am a bit tired, sorry) but it should be OK now.

Get it form http://rockbot.upperland.net/

Sorry for this issue, I'll keep my black A-320 with the old Dingux to avoid getting into this again.

No version for GCW Zero?
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0

No version for GCW Zero?

Didn't even knew this one.
In theory, Rockbot can be ported to almost anything that have at least 16MB of RAM and have a SDK with SDL, being Linux/Open-Source, much easier.

There is only one problem: the developer (aka me) does not own every piece of hardware out there and I'm already doing two ports that I develop in the dark (Pandora and Wii). If anyone donate the console to me, I promise I'll work on it ;)

I know, for fact, that Rockbot can be ported to Machintosh (I had a port running in an old VM, I still have the VM, but its hard to use because my PC is old), iPhone (jailbroken), XBox, XBox-360, PS3 (jailbroken, mine isn't), Dreamcast... But doing so without being able to run the thing on the actual console, make is REALLY HARD to do so. I had a plan to buy a Mac and some other stuff, but I got fired and still didn't got a new job :-P

\o/
You are most welcome, it was all my fault actually, so no need to thanks. Seems like OpenDigunx fixes a LOT of issues in Dingux, but it is not a good option to develop to, because other versions will simple break. I'm very happy it now runs again on A-380, but I remember you said before, something like the the screen size is wrong? Maybe now I can fix other minor issues, so, please report any improvements you guys can think of ;)
Title: Re: Rockbot 1.0.0
Post by: Alien Grey on March 19, 2014, 12:38:07 am
The screen issue has been fixed in the Dingoo A-380 CFW kernel but I think that it's still an issue for the Dingoo A-380 (with factory kernel), Dingoo A-320e and Ritmix RZX-50 (with factory kernel).

The problem is that on a larger screen (400 x 240 pixels / 480 x 272 pixels) the image gets placed in the top left corner and not centered on the screen like it should be.

I also posted a message on the Dingoo A-380 forum to let everyone know that it now works on the Dingoo A-380.

Post by: protomank on March 19, 2014, 01:30:41 pm
Hum, it is an easy thing to fix IF there is a environment variable telling witch are the Dingoo model, so I can init the video depending on that.
Can you try executing "export -p" in the terminal and checking if any of the variables indicate the Dingoo model? Otherwise I would have to make a different build or change the code to check available resolutions (that can be tricky).

Ok experienced another bug in a320. Beat the first boss no problem. When I selected dynamite to beat him I make it thru the whole level. However the boss holds up something after dashing at me then the screen flashes and I can't move for a short time and the boss just owns me. He keeps doing the same thing over and over. So I died like 3 times I get spawned in the little pre boss room. However when I respawned i respawned in the wall!!! Then I couldn't move and I had to reset game. Are these 2 different bugs? Let me know as I'm really enjoying this game.

Edit also played seahorse boss. Game crashed halfway through.
Edit #2 also crashes on 2nd level of monkey level

This is a great game! I have a suggestion, maybe move the health meter a few pixels to the right. When using AV-out on an old analog TV, the sides of the screen are cut off and you lose this bit of information. See the attachement 1DSC00042.JPG .

I'd also like to request a port for the GCW Zero. I tried he current version, there are a few errors with the text placement in the opening. After selecting a character the game gets stuck with your character looping the "warping in" animation in the upper left, and the controls become unresponsive, have to kill the process to get back to gmenu. Sorry I'm not a programmer so I can't offer any tips other than pointing you to the toolchain ( http://www.gcw-zero.com/develop ) and letting you know you'd have to make the game write its config and save files to $HOME/.appname if you want to package it as an .opk, as the format is read-only.

- What is your model, A320?

- Are you using old Dingux or OpenDingux? I did not tested the whole game in old-Dingux yet, so maybe there are crashes (I'm a bit out of time, looking for a new job as I'm currently unemployed, so lots of things to do right now, sorry).

- The part about Dynamite owning you is not a but, yes, he have a stop-time power that freezes you, and if you don't have the right weapon, it is very hard to beat.

- About the part you return inside the wall,, you said you died 3 times, so the first ones you were returning to the right place and only the last time went inside the wall, or you did play through the whole level 3 times?

- I'll test the Ape and Seahorse stages. The game just died and closed or did freeze the Dingux? If first option, can you reproduce it and check the contents of the stdout.txt file inside Rockbot folder, if the file exists?

The bar is in this position because, in the future, it will have two players, meaning 4 bars on the left... so space is precious.

I'd also like to request a port for the GCW Zero. I tried he current version, there are a few errors with the text placement in the opening. I won't, personally, make any other ports to systems I do not own. It is VERY HARD to mess with something you can't see. I already have ports for Wii and OpenPandora and I haven't the faintest idea how those run, if buttons and speed are right, etc. After/when I find a new job, I could look to buy some hardware, but right now, as I said previously: no paid job, no dice :-P

That said, porting the code is piece of cake and I can help pointing how to build and add changes to support the new system, if anybody wants to do the job (originally, Pandora por, for example, way done by sigma-nl).

I don't know what version of dingux I'm using. How can I find out? I think it's old but truly don't know. Does that depend on the local I put on my dingoo? Or is it the flash? And yes I spawned fine for 3 times then the 4 time I warped down and got stuck in a wall. Happened twice. The game doesn't freeE but I can't move so I force quit.

Edit ok I think I using open dingux. Tell me if I'm right, I used an installer and I had to change my LCD 9331 to zimage and I also have the rooftz or whatever it's called. I also have dual boot. Does that help you?

Normally, Old Dingux:

OpenDingux:

I found a crash during Seahorse, but only when facing the boss, the stage finished OK.
Will test Dynamite's to check the teleport inside wall problem later.

I noticed that there's probably a few misstakes in the Rock text.

smater -> smarter
manking -> mankind

Also the text from the intro should last a little longer because it's very difficult to read everything in such a short time. Or maybe it's just me who reads too slow.  ;D

I could finish the first stage without any problems on my Dingoo A-380 and didn't notice any bugs at all so far.

I can't reproduce those crashes, on both my Dingoo A320 devices (one running old Dingux and one OpenDingux). The crash I got, was when facing Seahorse himself, he moves inside spikes in the roof and I get a segfault. Maybe it's related.

About the fps counter, don't take it seriously, it is just a small tool for me to track differences of performance between platforms. But speed is one thing I want to improve in 1.0.1 and could not before because I needed to fix lots of bugs and deal with some new features.

The slowdowns don't affect the game play. This only seems to happen when the game goes from one screen to an other. If you know what I mean because I can't explain it any better.  ;D

But yes... It could use a speed bump to make the game play more smooth.

Ya load states are broken ATM. I love how rock man can just slide across the whole board. LOL

I've put an updated version in Rockbot's page http://rockbot.upperland.net/?page_id=301 (http://rockbot.upperland.net/?page_id=301).
It have some fixes and improvements from version 1.0.1, and in my few tests, run fine.

Sorry for the time it took, as was in the middle of some Playstation 2 modifications and also, I'm having to look every day for a new job, it is a bit stressing :-/

Ok downloaded update... So now I can see rock man dash goes way faster and his movement is faster in general. I did the seahorse level. Except now the seahorse goes to the top of the level and doesn't come down... He spits fish out in the spikes and I have no way of shooting him and I got stuck. Had to restart... Will try other stages... I thought you test all this before you update. Lol. Good to see you addressing bugs tho.

Oh, thousand times sorry. Seahorse is moving to screen top because I added a small hack to test a previous crash when he moved to have position and forgot to remove it from the code.
I've uploaded a fix for that now. Other parts of the same should be OK anyway.

Lol. Ok. I'm getting a little tired of reading all the levels over again. But I really like this game and really wanna beat it. If possible. Lol. Hopefully this can fix it.

Heheheh, sorry for that. Fixing the old Dingux issues created A LOT of other problems, and I'm at same time fixing things for 1.0.1. Right now I'm rebuilding the whole stage for Mummy Bot.

Thanks for the update. It's better, faster and possible to read the full text from the intro.  8)

Save state works again and I could finish the Seahorse level for the first time.  ;D

Yeah, and I just found that a flag that I was not using because it was not meant to work on Dingoo, works and makes the game even faster. It will take a time, but version 1.0.1 should be much better ;)

I updated the game to version 1.1.0. This adds a lot of bug-fixes, better physics, revamped stages and a few new features such as armor-pieces like the ones from megaman X.

Just pushed 1.1.1 version to site - http://rockbot.upperland.net (http://rockbot.upperland.net).
This is a new series of minor releases, more focused in bug-fixing and small improvements, so I can avoid creating new issues, as happens when there are too many changes in a single release, thus increasing overall quality while still bringing new features to the game.

Thanks man. Your support made me try again to port Rockbot to Dingoo native, and it look like that this time, i'll be able to do so ;)

Well, I don't own this device, and that makes things a bit hard. I'm currently out of money, and brazilian currency dropped drastically its value, so buying imports in USD is out of question right now.
I could port, if someone is commited to test until I get it working. But my previous experiences of doing this type of thing, are really bad, people start telling "ok, I'll do it for you" and sudenlly, they won't even bother answering you anymore. Happened three times to me already, for OSX and Wii ports.

But if anyone wants to post one old device in the mail for me, I'll gladly do it ;)

There's always the option of QEMU for the GCW Zero (http://www.gcw-zero.com/news.php?id=13).

ya the dingo scene is dying al ittle bit. I see your commitment and I like it, if you would port this you would se a lot more help #1 and more support in general. GCW is a bigger scene then dingux right now. plus this game is awesome and I would love it on GCW0

Yeah, as I said I had problems with ports without hardware. It is really sad having all the work to port to a new device and then people say "this is trash" and you can'ty fix because you can't actually even see the thing running.

I will give a try, but it should take time, as I'm starting Rockbot 2 with lots of changes and is still on its concept stages.

I honestly doubt anyone would say your game is trash... its a true megaman clone and its great.... I enjoyed it quite a bit... If you made it for GCW I could help you BIG TIME with bugs and overall gameplay. I did with your last couple of release... briefly. Or, leave Rockbot where it is, and just make rockbot 2 for BOTH. GCW threads move a lot faster here then dingo does....

As I said to Protomank, your work is appreciated. I still own and play my Dingoo A320. It saddens me that development is almost dead for it. I know their is bigger better things, but i'm selfish LOL. Its a plucky little system that needs more :) I wish they would make them again and sell them cheaply.

Yeah. I have 2 A320 (one broke a L button switch and its too small for me to replace), and I love both.
More modern devices have prices that are forbidden to me, as I live in brazil, and things are getting worse, as life here is getting very expensive and our currency lost half of its value this year, so no imports for me for a long while :-(

I'll keep the A320 ports alive and kicking for Rockbot 2, don't worry :)
