MIDPath 4 Dingoo v0.1
« on: December 30, 2009, 01:57:04 pm »
I've released MIDPath 4 Dingoo v0.1. Download link is at

http://midpath4dingoo.googlecode.com/files/midpath4dingoo_0.1.zip

I've created a Google code project for MIDPath 4 Dingoo (http://code.google.com/p/midpath4dingoo/). You can report issues, suggestions there. Code contributions are also welcome.

Here is the README,

MIDPath for Dingoo
==================

This is a port of MIDPath (http://midpath.thenesis.org) to Dingoo running
Dingux. It's based on MIDPath 0.3 RC2.

Directory Structure
-------------------
<midpath home>
 |
+bin             - Scripts to run Midlet Manager
 |
 +configuration   - Configuration files
 |
 +dist            - Java/native libraries for running MIDPath
 |
 +midlets         - Midlet JAR/JAD files
 |
 +phoneme_cdc     - phoneME CDC JVM
 |
+rms             - Record Management Store for midlet save data

Default Key Mapping
-------------------
Default key mapping for Dingoo is

A - OK
B - PhonePad 5
X - Softbutton 2
Y - Softbutton 1

Startup
-------
To start MIDPath, or rather the Midlet Manager, run
<midpath home>/bin/suite-manager.sh.

Midlet Manager
-------------
Midlet Manager loads the list of installed Midlets during startup.

Use Softbutton 2 to bringup the menu, which allows running the currently
selected Midlet, configure the currently selected Midlet, or install
new Midlet.

Softbutton 1 quits Midlet Manager. Press the OK button will directly launch the
currently selected Midlet.

Install Midlet
--------------
Put downloaded JAR and JAD file to <midpath home>/midlets, Midlet Manager
will pick up during startup.

If only JAR file is available, use menu item "Install" in Midlet Manager.
This will create a JAD file in <midpath home>/midlets directory with the
same name as JAR file except the file name extention. The Midlet will
become available in Midlet Manager.

Configure Midlet
----------------
Midlet screen size and key mapping are configurable from both Midlet Manager
and while it's running.

In Midlet Manager, use the menu item "Settings" to configure the currently
selected Midlet.

When Midlet is running, press SELECT + START to bring up the configuration
menu. It's not advisable to change the screen size while Midlet is running.
Some Midlets are not able to handle dynamic screen size change.

Settings are saved in <midpath home>/configuration directory.

i18n support
------------
Bitmap font included should have most commonly used latin and Chinese
(simplified/traditional) characters.

Currently the menu strings are available in both English and Chinese
Simplified form. To switch the language, change microedition.locale in
<midpath home>/configuration/com/sun/midp/configuration/system_properties
to either en-US or zh-CN.

String localisation files are stored in
<midpath home>/configuration/com/sun/midp/configuration/l10n/. Anyone
who is fluent in other languages are welcomed to contribute to the
translation.

At the moment only the following keys are required to be translated,
BACK
EXIT
SAVE
MENU
CANCEL
LAUNCH
INSTALL
APPLICATION_SETTINGS
UP
DOWN
LEFT
RIGHT
.
.
.
INSTALLING

Credits
-------
There are a number of components come from other projects. Additional credits
are in docs/ directory.

Sounds like one of the midlets you installed is damaged. Happened for me once.
Remove the whole MIDPath and reinstall it.

I got about 30% of the games I tried running.

A key-shortcut for quitting would help very much.
Also looking forward to sound-support.

Sorry for necroing, but this is a great project, and a lot of the games I've tried have worked perfectly. Even though it's been 4 months since any news, here's to hoping for updates in the near future!

Also, + karma for you!

A little compitability post!

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Episode 1, has been tested, and is working perfectly.

These are the controls I mapped:

Phone = Dingoo
UP = RIGHT
DOWN = LEFT
LEFT = UP
RIGHT = DOWN

OK/Fire = A
Num 1 = R
Num 3 = Y
Num 5 = Select

SoftKey 1 / Left SoftKey = X
SoftKey 2 / Right SoftKey = B

Num 1 is Press during testimony, while Num 3 is Present evidence during testimony.

Hope you'll buy this and back it off your phone, or (legally) obtain the JAR via the internet, because this is a great game, even though it's only one episode, and it's rather short. Get the Nintendo DS versions for the full games ;)

I added a pic of how it plays.

What seems to be the problem? You make the link to the midlet-manager.sh script in the bin folder.

MIDPath has to be copied into /local/ folder.

Not in any other folder! Otherwise it wont work. Should be fixed.

Games I've tested so far, I'll update this post as I test more games!

  • Flexis Extreme - 320x240 - Landscape
    • Playable, although a teeny bit slow at times.
  • Phoenix Wright - 240x320 - Portrait
    • Perfectly playable.
  • Peggle - 240x320 - Portrait
    • Playable, but abit on the slow side
  • Peggle - 176x208 - Landscape
    • Playable, a little bit quicker than the 240x360 counterpart.
  • Peggle - 176x220 - Landscape
    • Exactly the same results as the 176x208 version, playable.
  • Memory Wiz - 320x240 - Landscape
    • Perfectly playable.
  • Retro Games III (15in1) - 240x320 - Portrait
    • Perfectly playable.
  • Bejeweled Twist - 240x320 - Portrait
    • Game starts, you can start a game, but the playing board never appears. Unplayable.
  • Bejeweled Twist - 176x208 - Landscape
    • Loads, then abruptly exits before the menu is shown. Unplayable.
  • Bookworm - 176x220 - Landscape
    • Perfectly playable, and quite enjoyable aswell!
  • Hospital Sokoban - 176x220 - Lanscape
    • Perfectly playable, but the sprites are very small, so you'll have to have the Dingoo close to your face :D
  • Tower Defense - 320x240 - Landscape
    • Perfectly playable, and also a very good game.

This is all done with default clocking options (336 MHz), and you may experience different speed/playability results if you under- or overclock the MIDPath program.

Note: The orientation is how it shows up on the Dingoo, not the original screen orientation.

There's no mapped key for exiting the emulator. You either have to exit through the games menu system, or resetting the Dingoo by pressing SELECT+START+POWER, which is Dingux' shortcut for rebooting :)
