GNU Chess Piece Upgrade
« on: December 01, 2009, 02:10:55 am »
All this graphical horsepower and we use 2D pieces? Come on!  :P

Found these images on the net... sized, colored and shadowed them (only 'bout an hour... I'll make "really" nice ones later).

I currently have no web-space (or I would have zipped these up). If you would like to zip and post them, feel free! (Take credit for all I care) :P

(right-click and save files... overwrite old GNU Chess Images)

Note: Images appear differently on Dingoo.

...just something a little nicer for now...

Same... I have it on the easiest setting (I think... I have tried all possible settings), and it still kicks my butt every time!

What is the license of these graphics?
I read you found them on the net.
If the copyright is unclear, it might be illegal to include them in official dingux images, like toddler's local.

LOL!

These images have been changed more than 10%... Copyright no longer applies :P
Also, copyright prevents you from making a profit on the images... I am not making a profit... Nor is anyone else who makes a custom "pack".

If people can get away with making Themes of Mario, these chess pieces won't be a problem.

Still, they can't be legally redistributed with a GPL game.

If you say so :)

BTW: There was no copyright on those files, so this conversation is irrelevant.

yeah, call me a barbarian but talking about copyright issues when you use some 10x10 drawings of chess pieces for non profit reasons is so strange.
it's like a lot of bullshit about copyright on the TV really made a shift in our exposed minds.

thank you for this set of pieces, i've always enjoyed playing chess!

Xactly!

Shrunken "copyrighted" images of DukeNukem and Doom used in DMenu are OK, but your line in the sand is chess pieces?  ::)

Anyway... As promised... Here are the new pieces 100% done by me. It's hard to make something look cool with only 29x29 pixels.  :-\
Modeled, shadowed and rendered in 3D Studio MAX... Enhanced, cropped and pixel pushed in Corel Photo Paint.

Legal Stuff:
I NinJato, being of sound mind and body do hereby declare that these images are public domain to be used however anyone may see fit
(but if you profit from them, break me off some!).
:P
I do not need to be credited if you use them in a future release or "pack".

Right-click and save files (remove the "-3", "-4" when saving)... Overwrite your old GNU Chess Images.
(Images have been "tuned" for, and appear differently on Dingoo)

My Set:

Re-colors:

(or mix & match sets) - Updated December 4

If I see that enough people like them, I will make more... I have ideas for at least 10 different sets... It sure would be nice to change the pieces on the fly within GNU Chess... Maybe in a future release? The file names all have "29" in them and it would be pretty easy to name the sets with different numbers, allowing you to keep them all in one folder.

Merry Christmas Dingoonity!

Thanks again Ninjato, these look really nice as well

a bit of personal suggestion and definitely not criticism, I haven't tried them on my dingoo so maybe its just on my monitor but its difficult to differentiate between outline and shadow (particularly on the blue), maybe using a lighter shadow might help, i think the tiny size is the problem not your 3d studio skills, either way these are really neat and i'll try them out next time i get a chance

Yeah... I agree.
The Red and Blue ones are re-colors (not actually rendered in those colors). I think they are about 5-10% too dark. I'll see what I can do and repost them. If they program a piece selector into the chess program, I'll make a few different sets in different colors... Once I got MAX open, I got sidetracked.

 :P

 ;D

Edit:
I have updated the pieces (December 4).

Added 5% brightness, contrast and illumination to the Red & Blue Pieces.
Lightened shadows on all the pieces to be more subtle. (any lighter and you wouldn't see them on the dark squares)

 :)

Nice work again, the updated ones are a lot more distinct from the shadows now.

I've dropped a line to Zx-81, the original creator of Dingux-Chess, on his Dingux-Chess comments page to see if he's interested in updating it with a piece selector, I also asked if he could give us a run down of the setting so we can change the difficulty

It could be nice to have a "skin" selector in dingux-chess. I will work on it :).

That would be great!  ;D

I have already created another set.  :P

I wanted something that gives a feeling of how old the game actually is (from back in the Middle Ages). A set of pieces that were as simple as possible, made from "chunks" of raw materials with diverse coloring and textures (instead of the 'ol monochrome 2-color sets). A set that reflected elegant simplicity, yet indestructible timelessness.

:)

Right-click and save files (remove the "-1" when saving)... Overwrite your old GNU Chess Images.
(Images have been "tuned" for, and appear differently on Dingoo)

Raw Iconic:

My new favorites... Enjoy!

Edit:
Updated December 16 (one pixel was out of place on the Pawn shadows).

 ;)

finally i've found the time to work on it, i do plan a new release soon. You would be able to change not only piece skin, but also colors, board image etc ...

The new release should include NinJato skins (if you do agree)

@zx-81
Could you keep a better color contrast between selected and not selected text in the game menu?
I'm colorblind and I have hard time telling which option is currently selected.
That's also relevant for some other programs that use your menu. Some of them are fine, but the others not.
Thanks in advance :)

@zear: you'd better modify the background.png file and make it darker using gimp or any image editor tool.
