Title: Possible to connect USB mouse?
Post by: Margot on February 07, 2010, 01:42:50 pm
Some emulators emulate mouse with the D-Pad, so I tried to think (hope I did not fail)... Would it be theoretically possible to connect a USB mouse to the Dingoo's mini USB port and let programmers take advantage of that mouse in emulators like DCaSTaway and UAE4ALL and so forth?

My bad if this has already been discussed, I searched but did not find any topic.

There has been no specific discussion about mouses, but more generally it is not possible to connect USB peripherals to the dingoo "as is".

The idea is that the USB protocol is an asymetric protocol: there is a host device on one side, and peripheral devices on the other side. Unfortunately, the configuration is not only software: the hardware must provide USB host capability in order to be able to connect peripherals. In particular, it must be able to provide 5V power to the peripherals, because most peripherals (including all mouses) are not self-alimented.

The dingoo doesn't have this hardware configuration, so any attempt to use peripherals would first need to modify the hardware. I remember someone saying this would be possible, but AFAIK nobody has ever done it.

Thanks for the reply, guess we will not see this in a near future then.

It would not be enough to somehow half the voltage of a 9V battery and place this in the case of the mouse? My guess is that this might be possible.

But I see how this sound now, even if it was possible it would not be a very classy mod, nor would it be easy to first exchange the USB connector and then build and solder some electronics to convert 9V into 5V in the mouse and then fit a 9V battery in the mouse case... To much work, and way to many possibilities for spectacular failure (i only have one Dingoo).  :P

Better to run UAE on my Aspire One then.
