mplayer really slow
« on: October 18, 2009, 01:31:56 am »
hello all again,
just wondered if u guys were having success running videos in mplayer.  the ones i've tried have been VERY slow, but they are also high quality AVI's.  anyone recommend what format video's i should convert so that I have optimum playback in either mplayer or the native video player? thank u

Xvid 320x240 bitrate between 512 kbit/s and 1 Mbit/s
mp3 any bitrate
in an AVI container

Plays just perfect ;)

@benoitb so the quality is pretty much the same after conversion as the original (albeit on a smaller scale), right?

Wonder if mplayer has any chance of reducing the quality to compensate for the poor performance of higher quality .AVIs..

I have the following problem after running it:

Can't create proc/;z/imem nonexistant directory

Anyone see this before?

Yes, it happens when you don't use an IPU kernel.

I guess this may sound stupid, but I thought I had placed the kernel correctly. I assume you mean the zImage file in the original Mplayer archive?

Where should it be?

replace it with the current zImage in the main directory of the SD card

Hi Zear,
Just to clarify, the zImage "zImage_9331_ipu" for the Mplayer should become "zImage" in root?

I tried that, and Dingux won't load at all with that new zImage. 9331 is the correct version for me.

I remember in the instructions for Mplayer, it said "zImage_9331_ipu" for the Mplayer should become "zImage2" in root, but while Dingux loads, it has the error I referred to earlier.

To boot a kernel, you have to rename it to "zImage". There's no other way.
And if it doesn't boot, it's a problem with a shitty SD slot quality or something. Usually after I remove the card from the slot, I have to reinsert it several times for the Dingoo to finally read it and boot linux.

The normal zImage I had before worked fine, so I don't think it's the SD card?

Is it possible I didn't configure or install the mplayer files correctly instead? Or maybe this new zImage for Mplayer isn't quite compatible with something on my system?

This is what I did:

-------------
dingux-mplayer basic readme:

1. copy the appropriate kernel-image to your sd and rename it to zImage - I used the patched version from http://a320.freeforums.org/mplayer-with-rmvb-supported-for-dingux-t1512.html
2. copy mplayer.dge to local/mplayer or anywhere else on your sd
3. copy config and input.cfg to home/.mplayer - I only saw input.conf so I made a copy of it and renamed it to input.cfg. There's input.cfg AND input.conf in home/.mplayer

You can either create a new entry in dmenu like:

MenuItem MPLAYER
{
Icon = "res/media/gmu.png"
Name = " Mplayer"
Executable = "./mplayer.dge scrat.avi"
WorkDir = "/usr/local/mplayer"
}

If it was due to something in the filesystem, the kernel would boot and then crash on something.
If it doesn't boot at all, either the kernel file (zImage) is damaged, or it's the problem with the card I mentioned before.

I only tested mplayer with the unpatched IPU kernel.

Yes you don't loose any visual quality on the Dingoo's screen.
