Is Dingux really this unstable, or is it just me?
« on: January 17, 2010, 09:16:00 pm »
I installed Dingux yesterday, and while the emulators are nice and fast, it's constantly kicking me out of running emulators and resetting, sometimes booting me back out to dmenu where it hangs.  It happens a lot, I'd say 50% of the time.

It's happened on pretty tame, simple games like Ms. PacMan in MAME or Space Invaders for SNES.   Do I have something set up improperly?  Is this normal?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Yeah, something's got to be wrong.  Super Punch Out in Snes9x, DonPachi...it doesn't matter what I play, I'm going to get booted out about a minute in or so.   I have not played a full, stable game yet in Dingux.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the overclocking is what is to blame.  I know this is working fine for most people, but its been a frustrating disaster for me.

Either I am doing something really wrong, or this isn't ready for prime time yet.  back to the original firmware!

Some Dingoos are prone to freezing/errors when overclocked. Try without overclocking and see if that helps.

Thanks for the reply.  What is the normal speed without any overclocking?  I notice the settings go down pretty low on some emulators.

But the standard clock for the cpu itself is 400 mhz.

Thanks for all the help.  So, I have been running Donpachi at 336, default settings, no tinkering.  The game always crashes at some point, it's different every time.  Today I had it crash at the ship select screen, at the first boss entering, and on the title screen.  It's different everytime.  Same thing with MAME4ALL.

It's so frustrating beause slaneesh has put together some absolutely amazing emulators, and I know everyone is enjoying these.

I wonder, would I benefit from getting a new zImage?  I'm using the unofficial one with the shut-down option built in.  I think I'll try going back to an old one.

Anyway, thanks again for all the help!

...another reply to myself.  ;D  But, there's some insightful information here:

I replaced the "unofficial" zImage (the one with the power-off switch hack) with toddler's official build, and the problems have all but disappeared.   Donpachi played through without a hitch, as well as most SNES roms (one wouldn't run, but I suspect the rom is bad, or zsnes won't support it.)  Guwange still boots me immediately out, but I've read that game might have some problems.  Anyone else?

Also, I played through dozens of MAME4ALL games without a single crash, which never happened before when I was using the unofficial build.

So, something learned, and hopefully others can benefit from knowing this.
