DMenu 0.6
« on: January 06, 2010, 09:43:50 pm »
I'd like to do the most recent DMenu, as I'm currently running 0.4

Here's what I want to be sure of...

I looked in the structure of 0.6 and it looks like...if I save my dmenu.cfg file from previous...and then my custom icons for my emulators, for the menu from the res folder....

I would then just drop the new DMenu folder right in...
copy my dmenu.cfg into "theme.cfg"
copy my custom icons into the res folder under THEME

And I'd be good to go...with only the default theme to pick from.

Right??

And then, to add themes...I'd have to copy all that crud to every single THEME I put on my system.

RIGHT??

Seriously, this stuff is hard, folks!!
I want to be sure I'm doing it right....before I go and screw up something else!

I wasn't able to use my existing theme as-is when upgrading from dmenu 0.4 to 0.6. Dingux would constantly reboot with a segfault. What I had to do was to first boot dmenu 0.6 with the default theme, then copy the icons over, then I rebuilt my existing theme by copying/pasting the menu entries from my old .cfg files into the new "theme.cfg". I did it in stages, checking periodically to make sure I could still boot into the updated theme.

Dmenu can be a bit finicky, but I recommend upgrading to 0.6 as 0.4 had memory management issues. I couldn't get Simpsons to run under MAME 1.2 until I upgraded to Dmenu 0.6.

Make sure you back up your existing dmenu folder first though (rename it dmenu04 or something). You can always revert back if you feel a migraine setting in. :)

that would work?  And it would not allow for any Themes to be added, right?

I just don't really want to play around too much with Themes.  I'm not going to be looking at that screen for very long, I'm more interested in gameplay than themes, ya know?

Doing it this way just updates the dmenu its self not any configs and themes - because it dont contain any  ;)

Dmenu 6.0 its great and now we have the power off Kernal with RTC its even better......

Sweet.  Thanks for the info.

NOPE!!  Tried that, and it does not work that way.
Dingux throws a fit on startup, wanting the default/themes folder.

I just want to know how do I update, without screwing up everything I already have in there.

It wasn't quite that simple for me, but I was upgrading from dmenu 0.4

That was sorta what I THOUGHT I was going to have to do.

The icons will go back into "res" and the dmenu.cfg file will have to be copied and pasted into "theme.cfg"

But first, I should have to do a clean boot of 0.6, and then move stuff over.

Damn.  Was hoping to be able to avoid that....oh, well.

EDIT: Thanks QBert.  It was a long PITA process, but I finally managed everything.  The good news is, now, for my second Dingoo, I CAN just drop everything in!!  Just take the files all off my first Dingoo, and put them on the second Dingoo.

I noticed a few things, though.

Every once in a while, MAME or FBA won't start, it will go back to DMenu...but then, if you select it again...it will execute.
Same thing happened to me with the re-boot, once.  But on second try, it went.  Still does this from time to time, but no biggie.

The other thing I noticed is...now you do not have to hold down "Select" when booting into Dingux.  Just press and release "Select" and you're on your way to Dingux...no more holding it in, no more screen discoloration from holding the button forever...

And, of course, if you want Native, just don't touch the Select button on bootup.

You don't have to, but it's not a bad idea to make sure dmenu 0.6 is working fine with the default theme first.
