Is it possible to play "Wasteland" on the Dingoo?
« on: May 19, 2010, 05:10:27 am »
The wiki says Wasteland ran on Commodore 64, Apple II, and DOS. What options would we have here?
Would be interesting to perhaps try the First Fallout, but I could only begin to imagine what that would require.
I wanna say Fallout actually used Direct X, Ran on 16MB of ram, something like 100Mhz CPU I could guess that the hard drive demands would actually be met easier than anything else, but a Direct Sound compat sound card was something I had to do without back when it first came out, I think I managed to slip a third party driver that actually managed to play sound but was a little crippled but otherwise very playable. I'm really interested in Wasteland though to be honest,

Wasteland on dos works fine, there is no keyboard support yet but if you are desperate you could just map the key commands to the buttons
Or you could play wasteland just fine on the c64 emulator.

Fallout on the other hand will not come close to working, only stuff up to a 386 25 mhz ..

1) How would I go about mapping the buttons if I were to do so

2) How is it the C64 emulator would work better? Btw THATS SOME KICK ASS INFO

3) 386 Based Games at 25 mHz or below huh? Now all I need to find is a list....

MUAHAHAHA THE SEARCH BEGINS!

1)for Dosbox at the moment you have to make a txt file to map the keys, its easy really.

2) c64 would be better for wastland because it has a virtual keyboard, few if any bugs in the emulator and it allows you to make a savestate!

There's already a long, long list. Here' show to compile it:

1. Go to http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/dos/
2. Under Year, click on 1994 or earlier
3. For each year, a Game List is generated on the right

Many DOS games started to transition from i386 to i486 minimum requirements in 1994-95, so if you select a 1994 game, there's an additional step:

4. After selecting a game, click on "Technical Specs" in the left column; the important info is listed under "Minimum CPU Class Required" (chances are good that the game will be playable in DOSBox if it requires a 386 or lower)

Of course many types of games, such as pixel-hunting adventure games, will not be enjoyable/playable on the Dingoo regardless of system requirements, so you'll have to experiment (which is part of the fun!).

Happy experimenting :)

UPDATE:

I realized you can also filter by Minimum CPU Class Required, so here are the game lists broken down by minimum CPU requirements...

80386DX: http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/dos/tic,11/ti,1437/
80386SX: http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/dos/tic,11/ti,1436/
80386: http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/dos/tic,11/ti,66/
80286: http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/dos/tic,11/ti,65/
8088/8086: http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/dos/tic,11/ti,64/

You can then filter further by genre and other things...it's pretty fun just to browse through all the old classics -- it's like being in a vintage vinyl shop.
