Neko Project II for Dingux
« on: January 06, 2010, 12:41:39 am »
I found Neko Project II for the Dingux source code. I had a look at the binaries that someone had compiled but decided I would compile and optimized version myself.
Anyway, I've got it all working (as such) however, I can't find any PC-98 software that seems to work with it. Both .FDI and .HDI files so far boot but nothing actually starts.

I'm really intrigued by NP2 and the PC-98 scene, but I need some help getting anything it to run!
I'm interested mainly in games that don't need Japanese language as I cannot read Kanji, etc.
Some shooters would be best. See http://www.pc98.org/main.html.
If someone can help, I'd like to further optimize NP2 for maximum speed for the Dingux - can anyone help?

I've found some info. http://fullmotionvideo.free.fr/pc98/neko.html

Looks like I need VFIC to convert FDI images. Can't find it. :-(

Just tried this emu with a couple of games and it works ok!
i think you need to put these rom files (link below!) into the np2pc98 folder
I only got fdi files working and not d88.
hope this helps!

Oh and this forum is interesting  ;D

a few games need you to go to device/keyboard and then select joy key-1 to be playable.
ive tried a few hdi files and they work good, im really impressed with this emu!
some games are a bit stuttery but its looking good so far!

I've got a few games working now thanks to VFIC. Thanks for the link, rip.

It's a pretty solid and impressive emulator. I've made a few A320 specific tweaks and I will upload my optimized binary shortly.

Anyone know of any good shooters that work? Something like Gradius or similar?

Night Slave is a good mecha action game not unlike Front Mission: Gun Hazard, although you may want to turn the pornography off. I had to use Anex86 to run it on Windows though.

Last Breakers is highly regarded as well, and is a vertical scroller, but I've had no luck finding an image as yet.

I can't get much to work on NP2 - which is a shame. It just doesn't seem very compatible - and my lack of Japanese doesn't help either.
With Night Slave, the system boots into 'DOS' but doesn't get any further. I get some Japanese text come up - I can see there's something about 2.5Mhz and 5Mhz but that's all I can make out.
Doing standard 'dir' of the HDI contents reveals the usual mass of files. I tried executing a few *.exe, *.bat, etc but nothing much worked.

Any ideas? Any other suggestions? I'd like to work on NP2 for the Dingoo A320 but if nothing much works for it I'll devoted my attention to something else.

Got it! The 2.5 Mhz and 5Mhz message was the clue. The trick to get seemingly most HDI games to work is to set GDC to 2.5Mhz. This is accessible only when booting.
The procedure is:
HDD->SASI1
Emulate -> Reset with help key
Device->Keyboard->Keyboard

In the Japanese BIOS screen, select the 2nd option on the left hand window. The bottom option in the right hand window will have the letters GDC. Hit 'A' to enter.

In the following screen set the last option (GDC) to 2.5Mhz.  The select the last option - presumably 'exit', and then the last option again.

Your game should boot! Well I've gotten 2 out of 2 games (previously not working) to boot using this method: Steam Hearts and Night Slave. Alright I'm excited now about NP2.

Tried to get Windows 3.1 to run, no luck :( Gets stuck after smartdrive, then 3 lines of japanese and a blinking cursor. The hdi is for anex86 though...
edit: Now i tried with a ms dos disk,  i only get a blackscreen after running win... Sad.
Somewhere is a Win 95 version too, but that is very hard to find (and download)... a donkey might help you.  ;D Win 98 and 2000 shall be available for pc98 too (donŽt quote me!).

Would it be possible to run, ahem  ;D, older Windows games on top of it (sloooooooow of course, just as a proof of concept) theoretically?

Nice, but I don't think I'll bother learning Japanese  just for that :p In fact, that's why I never tried Neko Project on the Dingoo ;D
