Oh Boy / gnuboy for native new release with .zip support
« on: December 13, 2010, 03:14:45 am »
gnuboy and the frontend Oh Boy have been updated.

Screen shot showing mono GB game with color tones (available from options menu). This is not ColorIt support like in Heig-Boy.

New features since the last public release:
  • .zip support
  • change clock speed - you can underclock to try and save power for original gameboy games and overclock for gbc games
  • background in menu is changeable
  • bug fix when there are many files in a directory
Download available from http://code.google.com/p/ohboy/downloads/detail?name=dingoo_native_20101212_396da4b5fff1.zip

Extract to a new directory, e.g. "ohboy" and go :-)

Home pages; http://code.google.com/p/ohboy/ and http://code.google.com/p/gnuboy/

[edit, forgot to include home pages]

Finally got me a new Dingoo after I Kentucky ~~::fried::~~ the other one. Yippee! [edit] And lost it!

Not at the moment, whilst I have Dingux on an sd card, I find I mostly use Native. I bought the Dingoo expecting to use Dingux way more than native but it was the other way around for me.

My laptop's "massive" 18Gb hardrive doesn't have enough space for both a native and Dingux tool chain :-( Which is the main reason I've not yet done a Dingux (or OpenDingux) port.

If anyone wants to help, I'm happy to try and answer questions (although if you can edit a Makefile, there shouldn't need to be much more to do). I'd love to get a known/working Dingux makefile, and I'm happy to host binaries on the project page. Ayla has told me sound is screwy under Dingux with gnuboy due to some timing/SDL issues. Sound under native wasn't great until Harteex fixed an SDL sound issue. NOTE the sound code in Oh Boy is not the same as the code in plain gnuboy. So it is possible that Oh Boy will need some attention in the area of sound.

I really like the color option for ye'ol B/W Gameyboy games!  :)

I'll let you into a secret, gnuboy has had this capability for years... but you have to mess with config files which on the Dingoo really means you have to set this up ahead of time from your PC. See http://code.google.com/p/gnuboy/source/browse/trunk/docs/CONFIG for details, what Oh Boy does is let you do this easily in game (well you can select from some presets, you don't have full control over all colors/colours and filters).

Heig-Boy for Dingux has this feature (sort of) :)

ColorIt support in Heig-Boy is way more advanced than this :) The good thing about this feature is that it is automatic, you do not need to create color tiles. But it is very limited and is simple color remapping rather than the proper coloring that Heig-Boy has.

Thanks for the bug report.

It sounds like the problem only occurs when opening up a/some roms. Can you confirm what ROM you are loading and if other roms work?

I can confirm that the following PD roms work for me, Adjustris (GB) http://www.pdroms.de/files/910/ and Binary Chaos (GBC) http://www.pdroms.de/files/379/

Could you try those out as a test, please? They happen to be good fun games as well as good test :)

I would also like to know which rom(s) this happens on, in case there is an emulation issue.

Also keep an eye out for stderr.txt (or stdout.txt) in the directory where the .app file is, these tend to get generated when problems occur.

I forgot to also add a link to the controls wiki page. http://code.google.com/p/ohboy/wiki/DingooOhBoy

Thanks!

wy_scorpio:
What kind of A320 to you have... Dingoo Digital or Dingoo Tech?

clach04:
What version of the SDK did you use to create Oh Boy?

The reason I throw these questions out is that freezing on load of a second ROM is a known issue with 3rd party emulators and apps on the Dingoo Tech A320. The problem was fixed via a patch that, as I understand it, was later incorporated into a new version of the SDK.

Perhaps what's happening to wy_scorpio is related to this...or perhaps not. I'm just sayin.'

headrevs (i.e. later than the current available downloads of the SDK), I'm an occasional committer on the SDK project :)

This is a very valid point to bring up (so thank you for doing so), the native SDK has had a few small but significant impact changes; if you are using the native SDK, it is always worth checking what is new just in case you are missing something. Harteex's SDL sound fix being the most recent one (and available to download), http://code.google.com/p/dingoo-sdk/source/list is the easiest place to check what is in svn (and may not be in a download).

Yeah it got a bit like that since I haven't had too much time to maintain it, I'll do some updates soon I think, when I get time.

I'm hoping that if I get a GA330 at some point then I can make the native SDK cross-platform, though it will have to either make two binaries, or I'll have to do some ASM trickery to make double-size binaries that work on both platforms.
