Dingoo freezes when MicroSD card inserted
« on: February 20, 2012, 12:08:33 am »
I've recently acquired a Class 4 8GB Kingston Micro SD card, and whenever I put it in the Dingoo with the adapter (the adapter's brand is SanDisk, but I don't think that's the problem...), the Dingoo freezes. I've tried formatting it with different cluster sizes and with different programs but nothing seems to work. I have a Mini SD card that the Dingoo will see, but not recognize. It doesn't freeze with that in, though. I don't use the Dingoo to format the card, by the way. The Micro SD card came with a SD adapter.

I have opened the Dingoo up, and the reader seems to be intact.

Any ideas?

Where was it from? EBay?

I got a Kingston class 4 8gb MicroSD from eBay recently which was faulty (probably a counterfeit or rejected card) and would format fine under different programs, checked out ok in HTest2W yet wouldn't take an Android rom and frequently froze whatever device I put it in.

Does it take longer than expected to transfer files to it from a computer?

I'll try a different adapter if I can find one.

I bought the card from Amazon. The card itself seems pretty legit (then again, I've never experienced a faulty card). I'm a bit surprised at the speed, too. I'm not sure this would make a difference, but maybe it's the different brands of the card and the adapter?

Does it take an abnormally long amount of time to tranfer files in Windows (or whatever you're running)?

Mine was weird, it formatted like a normal card but took much longer to write to (3 minutes for 19mb!) and while it was being written to the progress bar in XP would  constantly adjust back and forth, like it was having problems writing the files.

I think the seller had a few returns that week which is why I think there will have been a dodgy batch on there again. Some sellers (not just on eBay) buy counterfeit cards and cards that have not passed quality control to sell. Did it come in retail packaging?

@lemmywinks

The read+write speed seem pretty good, although it takes a while to format on my laptop (but not on other systems)... The only thing that didn't come in retail packaging was the adapter, although the adapter seems legitimate (it has the SanDisk logo right on it along with MicroSD Adapter).

@Coccijoe

Did your Dingoo freeze when you had JUST the adapter in?

I saw this picture today and am wondering if it means anything at all? The only differences between the card on the right and mine is that the number on the bottom next to the FC is 56, there is a ' v ' on the right of the FC, and since it's an 8GB card, instead of C02G it's C08G.

I should be getting a different adapter (Kingston this time). Perhaps I'll test another card, too, if I can get one.

Caption under image: "In two separate orders, received slightly different cards. CHINA card was bootable in embedded Linux system (Zipit Z2). TAIWAN card was not."

I've got absolutely no idea if this means anything or not, but I just thought I should ask.

Received a different adapter in the mail today, but no luck. I've tried two different cards that are smaller in size but both Kingston (and both made in Taiwan), but they froze the unit too.
I should receive an 8GB SanDisk microSD card tomorrow; I'll check with that and post back when I find out.

I use Kingston with no problems...

Are you trying Dingux off them?

Have you tried format Cards to Fat32 and just move over a few MP3s and Videos, and few Roms then see if it freezes the Dingoo?

At first I tried booting Dingux, but gave up on that to figure out a way to make the card work on the Native OS. I've put files on the card and even then it froze the Dingoo. I've also formatted the card using a couple of different programs and even a different operating system to no avail D:

I'm beginning to think it's just my Dingoo. I've had that thought for a while but now I'm about ready to call it quits. I just need to wait until my other 8GB card from SanDisk comes in.

I should probably mention (or should I?) the other two cards I tried are not readily accessible to me.

It's the Dingoo. The card I ordered came in the mail today, but the Dingoo froze just like it did with the other cards. I'm just going to get another Dingoo, or a device that's better than a Dingoo.

Thats such a shame, if you can get another Dingoo and try the Cards then that would rule out a problem with the Card.

Have you tried as i said?

Format the Card Fat 32 defult allocation.

Create Folder Called MP3 put few songs in.

Create Folder Called Video put a Xvid/Divx Video in

Create a Folder Called Game and put a few NES Roms in

Then put into the Dingoo and if it freezes the Dingoo then you just have a problem with your SD Slot or some how something else is conflicting with it.

Dingoos are not made to the best standards.... one of mine has a faulty spring on the SD slot, so when you eject the SD card you have to be careful or else it shoots it out across the room lol.

@daniel-ntl
All of the pins are contacting the respective places they should be contacting. If I remember correctly (don't quote me on this), when the pin all the way to the left (with the Dingoo's slot facing away from oneself) wasn't contacting, the card would not freeze, but it would appear as empty. I didn't try one of the microSD cards that time as I didn't have them, but I'm not sure it matters (or does it?).

@bigdavebear
Yeah, it was formatted and I put some stuff on it, but still a no go D: It's kind of weird, too - the back light likes to function normally when it freezes, but nothing else likes to XD I'm pretty sure it's the stupid SD slot.
I'm thinking with your spring it might be fun to shoot people with miniSD ammo >:D
