nanonote versus dingoo: relation? mutation? evolution?
« on: November 25, 2009, 02:46:39 pm »
http://www.qi-hardware.com/products/ben-nanonote/

pretty popular on chinese low-cost gadgets... it is basically a pocket notebook way cheaper than most similar devices.

what is intresting is that some specas AND hardware parts looks a lot similar tha our beloved dingoo.

was already comented that dingux could be ported to that device, but i wonder about the interaction... with way more keys and a better screen (i think) maybe some emulators and tools (basic text editor, some old pc games, etc...) could work

so, what did you say about this device? any relation with dingoo? are they "friends"? maybe hardware-wise it is a mutated dingoo... well opinions, opinions, opinions.

anyone?

What can I say.. I already ported a couple of dingux games to that device. It's fully binary compatibile, the only difference is the color depth (16bpp on dingoo and 32bpp on nanonote).
And the difference between the hardware is that nanonote uses an "low end" version of the cpu used in the dingoo, and can't overclock to 430MHz. It runs in 330MHz and overclocking isn't recommended.
Oh, and forgot to mention that they're in touch with booboo, so any kernel tweaks they get there will probably also benefit the dingoo.

Here's a couple of pics of my eduke32 port to nanonote:

I did not, they're not in mass production yet.
It's just a testing unit, one of the devs ran it on.
He'll do quake pics tomorrow :)

BTW, here's a paper model of (I hope) a real size I printed out and compared to other devices:

i'm kinda sad now...

anyway, when will they mass product these beauties? and how much will it cost?

Psx4all was ported already. Side by Side runs with ~30fps (on Dingoo it's 40-48fps).
I'm not even mentioning the lack of gaming controls. And the keyboard is too small to really enjoy games.

That's what they say:
Quote
If everything goes according to plan we will start shipping from the US first and then add shipping from Europe. Figure the device to ship at somewhere close to 99 USD excluding shipping and taxes

i'm not planning to play the king of fighters... just some mid-range RPGs and tactical games (FFT advance, fire emblem, bahamut lagoon, some final fantasies, shin megami tensei... etc)

Zear, thank you for the clarification. So it really pays of to be a dev, isn't it? Ha ha. Thank you for the additional pictures. My heart skipped a beat when I saw a Psion in the picture. My beloved Psion 5MX has a broken flxi-cable (all Psions will suffer from this old age problem, repair is kinda expensive if still possible). Glad to see somebody still respects the old lady enough to compare it to modern clam shells. I still use a Psion clone for my schedule and address book (an Oregon Scientific Osaris with a much smaller screen and bad keyboard).

How is the keyboard of the Nanonote? Rubber or hard plastic? Does it type well (taking into consideration that it is as small a keyboard as a Blackberry)?

That's not a Psion, that's Jornada 720 (also running linux) ;)

Well.. no idea. I don't own that device, so I can only judge from the pics.
Here's a nice set of Nanonote photos: http://downloads.qi-hardware.com/hardware/Photos/

Then I want a Jornada! Looks exactly like a Psion to me. Gonna look for a place where they (still?) sell them. Curious what the price is...  :)

The only source for them is currently ebay. And it's second hand only.
Jornada 720 is a year 2000 device, with 200MHz ARM and 32MB RAM. The screen reaction time is rather poor. Not for movies/action games.

But let's get back to the topic, shall we? :)

http://downloads.qi-hardware.com/hardware/Photos/ FTP of lots of photos of this unit.

I would be interested if it had WIFI.. Without WIFI as stardand, it's personally kinda pointless to me..

Why do I still want one though?  :P
