Max sd expansion size?
« on: November 25, 2009, 04:29:05 pm »
I just placed an order for my Dingoo. I know the specs state 8gb max size in the advert and on the box - but at times firmware updates etc expand that.

I'd like to order a card so it's here when my Dingoo arrives.

What is the current max size it recognizes?

Thanks!

8 is the max for which no problems of any kind are reported.

I, myself, use an 8 - and have nearly 1,000 different games on my dingoo, between the card and the 4GB of internal, and plenty of room left.

Others report no problem with using a 16...some have reported problems.

16 is the highest I've seen anyone claim to be using...and, as I said, some have reported problems with 16, others have reported no problems.

I use a 16GB card on occasions, But only for the native firmware, As i have never had any success in booting into Dingux (Freezes at boot screen) when using said 16GB card. The native firmware has no problems browsing and running programs etc, whatsoever with that card. For Dingux, I have been forced to use a 2GB card, As i don`t have card larger that will work with Dingux.

If it truly conforms to the SDHC specification it should handle 32GB and possibly more, depending on what the state of the art is when micro SD cards larger than 32GB become available at a reasonable cost.

The current standard limits the maximum capacity of an SDHC card to 32 GB.
SDHC cards also have a maximum capacity of 2 TB based on the card data structures, but this is artificially limited to 32 GB by the SD 2.0 document.

Sandisk are supposed to be releasing a 32 GB Micro SD card in the coming months. But I reckon they will cost just as much as a Dingoo.  ;D

Thanks everyone. I scored an 8gb off ebay for a little under $20, shipped.

Should be a fun toy when it's all said and done.

Doesn't it depend on the brand of the 16 GB/32 GB SD card if it's fully functional or not?
Finally got me a new Dingoo after I Kentucky ~~::fried::~~ the other one. Yippee! [edit] And lost it!

Honestly could not say...don't know if anyone has taken notice of the brands that fail, versus the brands that succeed...or if that is at all relevant.

All I do know is...8GB always works.  Anything over 8, and you are taking your chances.

SanDisk 16GB Class2 MicroSD with MiniSD Adapter works great.
32GB is now available.
My 16GB Card was $50 Canadian on eBay.

The Class 2 is plenty fast enough. Purchasing a Class 4 or 6 will only save time when copying to the Card. For me this is not an issue... I setup all my folders and files on the hard drive, then copy the whole tree to the Card and walk away. It takes 2-4 hours to copy 16GB to the Class2 Card.

Do not waste your money on a fast Card... You will never use transfer rates of 20-30 MB/s while watching a 1.3GB movie over a 2 hour period.

I run Dingux without issues. Have tons of stuff loaded like MAME, Genesis, TurboGRFX, OpenBOR, Wolf3D, Doom, Duke3D, Methane Bros., etc... No corruption.

 ;D

As for the 32GB Cards... I was told that they are in Canada - FutureShop (I think), and that they were $120 a Card. I just searched Google for a place to buy online, but can only find "pre-order" sites.

I have an existing 256MB SD card in my Palm T/X.  I up graded it to 4GB, same brand.  The new 4GB SD card is not recognized.  Will my T/X recognize a 4GB SD card?  What is the largest size I can go to?

You know that you are writing this to a dingoo forum??

Anyways ... SD specification covers sizes up to 2GB.
SDHC is artificially limited to 32GB.
There are some non standard 4 GB SD (not! SDHC) cards. Those cards violate the SD standard, and often cause problems, and many devices do not support them at all.

So if your device supports SDHC you can use any size.
If there is only SD (without high capacity) stick to 2GB cards.

Brand is completely irrelevant. (there are some speed differences, but no compatibility difference)

I shoulda specified what I meant about 8GB never being a problem, and 16GB sometimes being so...refers specifically to Dingux.

I've never tried anything larger than 8GB in any Dingoo I own, because all of my Dingoos are flashed with Dingux.  I don't own a Dingoo that does not have Dingux on it.

Basically, I just put the card in once, and then leave it alone thereafter.  I don't go changing cards.

For every device I own that needs an SD card (not just Dingoos), I just buy a card, specifially for that device, and then put it in and leave it in.

DDUSA is getting in some 32gig cards so no doubt we'll be hearing how those stand up to vigorous testing shortly!
