Android OS port, possible? useless?
« on: November 13, 2011, 10:07:51 am »
I read that theres a MIPS port of Dingoo, is it any way possible to port it, and could it bring more potential features to the Dingoo, or is it just useless?

In my opinion this is interesting but there is an OpenDingux on the table and starting now with new OS now will be a big pain for devs. But let them talk for ourselves :D

That's impossible. Android requires a touchscreen at least.

No it doesn't. There are non-touch laptops with android.
Sorry guys for not caring about dingoonity lately. It was nice to be with you, and maybe I'll come back, but not now...

Yes, but they do have a mouse or a touchpad. What I meant is that you can't control an Android device only with a keyboard or in our case only with buttons.

If you just want to start apps or so buttons are enough. Of course touch screen gems won't work, but some emulators can just use the buttons.

EDIT: I don't mean it's useful anyway. :)

That's worse than that, you can't even launch an app without a pointing device...

I still think you can launch apps with buttons (on my android tablet when I connect USB keyboard I can control it), but even if you can't you could use virtual mouse driver for launching apps.

I think you're arguing over wrong thing. The questions here would be (in this order):
Does it work with MIPSel CPUs?
Would it work under JZ SoC?
Is there enough RAM on Dingoo to run this?
Would any of the applications run at a decent speed?

Even if the answer to the above was true (somehow), I bet it would still require some work to make it run on Dingoo.

AFAIK there is no way to port Android:
-it requires ARM cpu with (at least) Thumb instruction set (Dalvik VM uses Thumb heavily)
-too little ram- first Android device (Google G1 aka t-mobile g1) had 128 MB
-CPU speed after overclocking possibly could be enough for OS itself but rather not for any more complicated (eg. games) apps
-UI was designed for touchscreens

Maybe ARM/Thumb requirement was changed -I see that there is MIPS Dalvik source available but why they demo it on HTC hardware?

It's more likely but:
-only 64 MB ram
-most likely graphic drivers that Android could use would have to be written from scratch- framebuffer alone is not enough for Android (if cpu has 2d/3d gpu/core/subsystem)

Before you ask- yes, I do have some knowledge of Android
