In the old days, the dark times, there used to be a limit in things like DOS such as a 255 files in a directory, mainly due to the way the FAT (file allocation table) was constructed and stored on ye old 8 bit computers...

It may be something like that.

(taken fomr a random forum thread with a quick google)

A FAT32 directory can have 65,536 directory entries. Each file and
subdirectory takes from two to thirteen entries, depending on the
length of its name, so those entries can disappear long before you
think you've used them all up. Your total of 22,657 files could very
easily use 65,000 entries.

so yeah, possible it's hit the limit if they're all in their own folders or something?

have you tried sorting them into folders for each letter? i can get all the megadrive roms on no problem (probably less though)

originally all 6,000+ files were in 1 directory. lastnight i sorted them into directories by 0-9, and a-z. the largest directory is "s" which has just over 600 files. each directory is loading fine now. =)

cheers

Could it be possible this is actually a limitation of the Dingoo's firmware and not a general limit of files per directory? Yesterday I added about 500 new songs to my dingoo, and now it freezes up everytime I try to select either the Playing or All Songs choices. Folder Once works fine, though since I organize my songs by album, this means I can only listen to an album at a time.

While trying to load all the songs causes the official Dingoo firmware to freeze, they play perfectly fine through Dingux (mPlayer). What gets me is there are only ~1600 songs on my Dingoo.

Guess the OS was never tested with that many..

This brings to mind the possibilities for disk errors, or disk fragmentation although it's prolly not that big a factor on flash media?
