Buyers Beware!
« on: December 18, 2009, 03:57:58 am »
Hi, I'm new to this forum, registered here to tell my story.

No, this is not spam!

I bought a Dingoo on Thinkgeek.com.

http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/retro-gaming/bd6f/

"a320 Pocket Retro Game Emulator" they call it and it costs $99.99
thinking this was a legit place to buy it, I went ahead and ordered it.
UPS Shipping cost me $37.79

So that makes it... 137.78$
(Expensive, but my story doesn't end here)

Today I got a call from customs, saying that they are charging me 78? (112.234$), used xe.com to convert it on 12/18/09 2:55AM GMT-1

This bring my dingoo to the grand total of: *Drumroll*

250.014$ For a friggin' DINGOO!

So people, if you live in Europe, do NOT buy dingoos from Thinkgeek.com
Actually, if you're in Europe, don't bother going there AT ALL!

I warn you guys so that you won't make the same mistake I did!

(Could've got it from DX, but since it was a Xmas gift from my brother to me...well... he wanted it to come here fast, and we all know how FAST Dealextreme's orders are ;D)

Anyways, that is all!

Merry Xmas!

There are a few European retailers in this topic: http://boards.dingoonity.org/dingoo-hardware-general/where-does-he-get-those-wonderful-toys/

But yeah, if you buy anything like that from outside of the EU and have it imported, you're almost certainly going to get whacked by a big customs bill; that's fairly standard. You can usually avoid it in the case of something like t-shirts, but not large items, electronics etc.

Where are you from?

78? for customs? Even in germany (wich is always expensive) you only have to pay 19% of the total price...

Registered just to answer this. ^^

DX is a hong kong retailler (they themselves state it here http://help.dealextreme.com/Frequently%20Asked%20Questions.ashx#How_are_Tax_and_Customs_duties_handled_7 ).
So it isn't safe for european people under aggressive customs to order from them.

If you're european, it's always safer and better to order from a shop within european limits.
(I got my Oblivion US game taxed because of that ... a 30 euros product ! )

I got mine from the official UK retailler www.dingoo.co.uk .
Around 80 euros, delivered fast, fully charged and with a nice (but not waterproof or resistant) bag.

The only thing I would rant about is the lack of a proper manual (no "first time use" paragraph, poor translation, got installation problems the first time I pluged it on my pc).
This and the nearly useless L+R buttons (too hard, damn it !  >:( ).

Back on the topic, order in UK as much as you can, if you live in an european country.
Even if the ? is more expensive, you shouldn't get taxed or face other international ordering surprises.

I'm also from Portugal and decided to order from gbax.com just because they seem trustworthy and with a good reputation in the community.
They ended up delivering it late because they were restocking the product, but to make up for it they sent it by Royal Mail.
If you're European, I recommend them.

Yup.  I got mine for $82 American...from Hong Kong.  And, at this point, unlike in times past the American and Canadian dollar are almost equal in value.

Used to be the American dollar was worth a lot more, but not anymore, after years of stupid economic policy.
