I'd like to see the source code :). I know I've been pestering you with that a lot recently, but rules are rules and releasing the code only benefits the project.

Many thanks for Dingoo support. I would like Empire city 1931 running fullspeed in the dingoo version of MAME if it already isn't. I bought a dingoo recently and would love to play that game.  I believe the game had problems in the GP2X version.

d_smagin has started working on a new FinalBurn Alpha emulator for the Ritmix RZX-50, Dingoo A-380/A-320e, Dingoo A320 and GCW Zero. I don't know if there's going to be support for legacy Dingux but I think that we don't really need it anymore after the release of OpenDingux.

You can find his work here: https://github.com/dmitrysmagin (https://github.com/dmitrysmagin)

Slaanesh thanks for your return

A few questions:

You talked a few time ago for a version of dosbox with 30% speed increase, can you release this version please?
Can you release Source code or port at Open Dingux?

FBA, In my opinion the best emulator of arcade for dingoo thanks!!!
Can you release Source code or port at Open Dingux?
It is possible add System16/18 games support?

Respect Mame4all for dingux, this games need a fix:

Hook (No sound) Its a driver problem, no sound in all irem mt games.
Alien Storm. (Not run).
Altered Beast (Graphics glith unplayable)

Alekmaul?s nativeos port not run more games for not enought RAM  but with swap runs very well in your Dingux por:

The simpsom.
Snow Bross 2
Do Do panchi
Caveman Ninja
...

In my opinion the best way to improve mame4all  is porting a new version for Open-Dingux fixing:

Alien Storm, Altered beast and other system 16/18 games that not working.
Add sound to IremGA games.
Add a fast z80 and 68K cores for mips.
More overclock options.

Thank for your work, specially for you fba port!!!!

I am more interested in that Dingoo Native versions of MAME4ALL and shortly FBA. There are significant increases in speed just because it is not running under Linux.

I also like the "instant on". Virtually no wait time for start up.

However I will do some OpenDingux vesions too as I like the sound of the GCW-0. As soon as I get one I will do OpenDingux versions of everything.

Well, OpenDingux supports hwsurfaces with double buffering. That's a significant boost in the framerate.

Remember In Dingux and OD you can use Swap memory, and use Tv out with overclock (in native OS you cant use Tv out with overclock).

In native OS or use a cache files like fba or is impossible run many games.

In dingux with swap no RAM problem.

FBA for native os should be great ;)

We should not forget that OpenDingux uses compressed ram (zram) to extend the amount of available fast memory (unlike swap on SD).

Haven't tried Mame recently on Dingux but last time I did (which I admit was a while ago) it ran a hell of a lot smoother in native.

Either way, wish people weren't so anti native. :(

Am really starting to feel that native development isn't welcomed by this community any more, which isn't pleasant. I like native and I don't like Dingux, but I certainly don't want to convert anyone over or mock anyone that prefers Dingux. Fact is we have a choice and it shouldn't matter what any person's personal preference is.

Also getting tired of the source code bitching. As much as I understand why it should be released and agree that it should indeed be released, it seems very one sided at the moment.

I would know how fast is (fake) crunched ram vs real ram.
On linux Swap memory use harddisk and it's really slow compared with DDR Ram.

Since you keep it in ram, it should be of the same speed as uncompressed ram.
The only difference is, you use cpu to compress/decompress it, so if any, I'd look for the speed decreases here.

Massive +1

I usually just use native, I think it's a nicer interface and has better emulators. Kinda funny seeing as not many people develop for it.

In fact if the A320 just had Dingux I probably would have sold it a while ago.

No worries Alek.

16MB looks about right. I ran a little test program which malloced RAM until in ran out.
My process was about 2-3MB and the malloced died at around 13MB.

Whilst it doesn't sound like much it's enough for 95% of MAME games. The bigger ones will fail but that's okay as FBA will take up the slack for those.

The ones that do fail are all available under FBA anyway so I will remove some of these large ones from MAME4ALL.

FBA works because it can create cache files for the large games.
MAME4ALL doesn't create cache files and would be a pain to modify to do so - so I'll leave it as it is.

Zear, compressed RAM would be slower than real RAM. Such RAM would have to be compressed into blocks or pages and then uncompressed again when in use.
For maximum performance which most emulators need, compressed RAM might be okay for storing graphics/sound data but I think that would be about it.

Also, I've been getting another little GEM to work on Dingoo Native - Temper the PC Engine emulator.

I have the first few games working yesterday. It's a pure native port, no SDL. I think it should run most games at full speed and full frame rate at 420Mhz.

:D

I'm using the Windows version of mipsel-gcc4.1-nopic http://code.google.com/p/dingoo-sdk/downloads/detail?name=mipsel-gcc4.1-cygwin-nopic.tar.bz2&can=2&q= (http://code.google.com/p/dingoo-sdk/downloads/detail?name=mipsel-gcc4.1-cygwin-nopic.tar.bz2&can=2&q=) and it's driving me nuts.

It's crashing with some compiler options.

Of course ;-)

The author is a programming genius. He's the same guy that did the Gameboy Advance emulator that you see everywhere (including the Dingoo Native).

Just coaxing some speed out of it.

Got some nice gains using DMA video copy without waiting so it happens synchronously with emulation.
I'll use this same technique for the MAME4ALL too. This is a fairly large gain.

I also tested an assembler blitter but it was just a smidge slower.

The default 'C based copy is *really* slow. I wouldn't be using that, ever!

Also will profile the code for another 10% gain in performance. Unfortunately complex code seems to crash GCC - thus my plea for a later version of GCC.

There's also a CPU recompiler ie. "dyna-rec" though it's a "C" based one not machine language.
It doesn't seem to have the "wait-loop" detection which seems to make it slower in some cases and faster in others.

What a lot of bullshit. Have you tried OD recently? The fact are, OD loads as fast as the native OS, and the apps that run on both native OS and OD are faster on OD (see pocketSNES).
And we're not done working on it, there are a couple of areas that require work, and that could lead to major performance improvements.
Title: Re: New version of MAME4ALL for Dingoo Native v1.1
Post by: slaanesh on October 18, 2012, 03:17:16 am
I haven't tried OD at all.

I was comparing to Legacy Dingux as that is all I have.
MAME4ALL on legacy Dingux is signifiantly slower than the Native version.
Booting legacy Dingux and then starting whatever emulator you wish to start is also significantly slower.

That's my observation - or do I need to state that whenever I write something?

I don't think your rude reply is really warranted nor is it necessary.

Post by: pcercuei on October 18, 2012, 03:45:42 am
Then next time you claim that the apps are faster under the native OS because "it is not running under Linux", just make sure you tried the latest Linux version...

And you know what else is rude? Not caring about the GPL. And not replying to the several emails and PMs I sent you asking for the sources.

It's very close to ready but I've been distracted now with MAME4ALL and Temper so DOSBOX can wait it's turn again.

HI Slaneesh,

Thank you very much for announcing the new version of MAME4ALL 1.1 for native.

One bug I recall on the 1.0 version was when you rotated the screen from vertical, to horizontal orientation - and back again -  the emulator could freeze up on you, or crash. (I used to change the orientation of games to play vertical on the LCD screen, and then change back to horizontal for TV OUT, again. The emu didn't like the change back again).

I recall that Vulcan Venture was a bit slow - don't know if this can be fixed, or that is the way it is.

I have a Caanoo, a native Dingoo A320 and JXDs601. I still rate the Dingoo, it is so petite and has a good screen. This machine cheers me up when I feel down. I do not feel compelled to mod the original Dingoo and applaud efforts to produce programs for this version, still.

In the readme for this version of MAME4ALL can you tell us how to re-define keys for games like Robotron, please. That type of game is ideal for the Dingoo layout.

Thanks!  ;D

V1.1 is not out yet. I'm hoping for this Sunday, local Australian time.

I will post a link here too.

I don't have an A380 so I cannot test with it. MAME4ALL Native is optimized for handhelds which have a 320x240 screen.

Defining keys is easy and can be done through the internal MAME config.
When in game - pressing <SELECT>+<B> gets your to this screen.
In here are options for defining keys for all games, current games, autofire, etc.

Other combos are:
<SELECT>+<Y> Pause
<SELECT>+<X> On screen options - mainly volume and brightness
<SELECT>+<L> Profiling info (devs only)
<SELECT>+<R> Emulation speed and framerate. You generally want this to say "100% 60/60"
<SELECT>+<START> Insert P1 credit
<START><L><R> Exit game or ESC key. Can be used to stop loading a game when you get to the info screen on loading.

I haven't got v1.0 of MAME4ALL on my Dingoo at the moment, does <SELECT>+<B> work?

Hi Slaneesh,

Yes I got the <Select> + B key function up, on MAME4ALL 1.0 native.

I can see how it would work (like PC MAME), but I lacked the competence to reconfigure Robotron. Just stuck with 2 x fire buttons left and right :<

That is me not working it out, rather than an absence of any options in the emu.

Long live Native Dingoo!

Yay!

Finishing off a few things, always takes longer than I expect due to lack of time with family commitments.

I have been working on yet another project - Atari 2600 emulation.

So, that's MAME, PC Engine and Atari 2600 coming, in that order. FBA as well.

Great!

Can you tell us a bit more about the PCE emulator? Is it similar/based upon the existing Hugo port on native?

Re the Mame emu, the current native one is pretty darn good however there are a couple of small things that could be improved upon:

- Any way of creating a single .app file instead of multiple ones?

- Better button combos for inserting credits, navigating the menu, quitting etc.

Slaanesh said earlier it is a port of Temper which I think is also on the Wiz/GP2X. Had a quick read and it seems to be a really quick and efficient emulator so is something I'm really looking forward to.

Thanks for the update on the MAME 1.1, Slaneesh.

In the big scheme of things an improved MAME emu for native Dingoo is the best priority  ;D

The Dingoo screen is very crisp, actually, and I prefer that screen to the Caanoo screen, which is bigger but less sharp.
Some of the MAME games look very nice indeed on Dingoo. (It is just that rotation issue that puts me off the Dingoo, sometimes as if I touch it it can crash if I re-orientate the screen back again. I do like my vertical orientation, when I can get it.)

Thanks to Slaneesh for trying. This Emu scene respects people like you and you have an impact upon many users.

I have been working on yet another project - Atari 2600 emulation.

So, that's MAME, PC Engine and Atari 2600 coming, in that order. FBA as well.
I can't wait PC Engine and Atari2600 emulators for Native

Sorry guys I'm not MIA, just get distracted with other stuff. I've been working heavily on Atari 2600 emulation which has been really fun for me. So other things like MAME and Temper slide a bit.

Take your time, buddy! We appreciate your hard work and contributions to the Dingoo scene.  I'd rather have emulators that work than ones that cause headaches.  Thanks again!

Yes I am. I've been working a lot on MAME4ALL and keep improving things.  But's it's time for a release as everyone's patience is probably up.

I've been busy the last two months working on various Dingoo Native projects: First release will be MAME4ALL v1.1

I've gotten a new module working which will feature Midway and Williams games:

Mortal Kombat, Smash TV, Terminator 2, Trog... even NARC!
NARC is a bit slow but the others play nicely given the A320's constraints. I've had a lot of fun with MK and Term2.
Attached are some photos.

I've also been busy preparing a DosBOX release for OpenDingux.

He's released Dosbox for OpenDingux with sources, give the guy a break.
Just because he learned we made our own Dosbox port for A320/GCW (not yet released, but videos were presented). We tried to get the sources of Dosbox from Slaanesh since 2010. We've been asking, begging, threatening, bribing, but nothing helped. So then d_smagin had to re-do the entire work from scratch, mainly fixing and expanding the psp dynarec core, which was a lot of hard work. Now when d_smagin presented his progress, suddenly Slaanesh decided to release his work.

So yea, I wouldn't count on a change of heart, he won't release the MAME4ALL sources, unless someone makes his own port. Then he will release his code a day before, just so he can be the center of attention.

Really, that guy's impossible.

First of - I have very limited time. I'm 43 years old and I have a family to support. I do all this in what little spare time I have. This is the first chance I've had to revisit this thread. I bet the demographic here is very much younger than this and probably have tonnes of spare time.

On top of this, the last couple years I've had virtually zero motivation with new releases and I pretty much ignored all emails and messages from various boards. I admit that. I was busy with my family and in my spare time pursuing other hobbies.

As for DOSBox, I had no idea d_smagin was also working on another version of DOSBox - I literally stumbled upon whilst doing some research on the 'net AFTER I released it. What motivated me to get working on DOSBox was that Justin (GCW-Zero founder) offered me a free GCW-0 to get it done and released - and that is what I have done. I sent him regular emails indicating my progress on this - feel free to ask him about it.

Anyway I have done so and the next thing on the list is MAME4ALL Native with sources, etc.
This is finished, the last thing to do is some profiling of the code and you guys can have something else to play with.
I'm going to make another DOSBox release tomorrow and then I'll get to MAME4ALL later in the week.
It will come, I've spent loads of my spare-time hours working on it.

I don't like to start a flame or anything, but none of the stuff you mention justify it. GPL is GPL and you are OBLIGATED to release the source code, after people request it. We don't care how old you are or how much spare time you have. Released a binary of something based on GPL license? Release the code. You pissed off quite a lot of people not doing so.
If you don't want to release the code before the product is finished - don't release any binary builds before. It's that simple.

Your help is still welcome :)
Best way to contact us is joining our IRC channel #gcw on freenode.org.

Double standarts.

Under MAME4ALL, the Irem M92 games either don't work or have no sound. These were only successfully emulated later on.

FBA on the other hand may do them, Ill have to check.

EDIT:
The only Irem M92 game supported by FBA for the A320 is "Hook".
However, the GCW-Zero's version of FBA will support pretty much all the M92 games listed in he previous post.
