Best snes emulator to date
« on: March 09, 2012, 06:53:48 pm »
Hey everyone. As I have been playing through the recent updated emulators for the snes, on both dingoo native & dingux, I felt I wanted to open a topic to what everyone thinks, so far, is the best snes emulator for the dingoo, in general... either native or dingux.

So far, the three best are the following: DINGOOSNES V1.1, POCKETSNES V.2.3.2 & SNES9X4D(dingux). They all have their advantages & disadvantages, but out of all 3, currently, I still believe snes9x4d, release 12/27/10, is still the king. Not only is the speed incredible, the compatibility of it is without equal. It plays EVERY snes game flawlessly, even some Squaresoft hi-res releases, such as Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 & Rudra's Treasure. It also plays Star Ocean.

Now, the only negative to snes9x4d that I read about in the past is its speed. After messing around it with it some more & researching, I was able to figure out a way to increase its speed with a simple adjustment. All I had to do was increase the overclock of the emulator's mhz to maximum output, 415mhz. Oh, sorry I didn't mention, I use a dingoo a320 by the way.

After adjusting the overclock speed, the emulator played perfect. If you want slightly quicker fps per game, turn off the transparency effect. But with the overclock to 415mhz, with transparency ON, it still runs perfect. Anyways, those are my two cents. What do you all think??

The sound is crap in EVERY Snes9x made by Science, there is a annoying background noise in every game, and the sound is too cheap(like a radio sound) and it get even worse in some Enix games.

I thought it was normal and everything, but in drowsnug Snes9x version the sound is cristal clear:

I know some people don't care about music and even play with the dingoo speakers, but to me is a sin don't play Donkey Kong Country games and others without a good earphone and a perfect audio.

You're correct about the sound... in snes9x4d, its a tad bit off compared to the crystal clear quality of some other snes emulators... but i mean, overall, the snes9x4d emulator on dingux, in my opinion, is the OVERALL favorite & winner.

It's my fav as well. As far as the sound is concerned, I never use my Dingoo with sound above 50%, so I admit I never noticed/was bothered by subpar sound quality.

I personally use PocketSnes on native, it pretty much runs the games Snes9x4d does, and has more options.

Without telling that, without overclock, you still run games almost perfectly.

I agree... it's just I am a HUGE fan of the mana series on snes & snes9x4d is the only emulator that plays these games correctly. I am referring to the hi-res text boxes. Snes9x4d runs mana, mana 2 & rudra's treasure perfectly. These other emulators for native or dingux don't... unfortunately.

As I see, nobody prefers DingooSNES. Maybe I should not have to create it?

For speed: DingooSNES v1.1, use the 1.3 version out of the two that come bundled with it.  The speed is absolutely terrific, even while transparency is on.

Best all-round compatibility: PocketSNES.  It doesn't run Megaman X2-3 like DingooSNES can in it's slower form, but it does have Star Ocean and Hires text box compatibility.  Recent improvements made it snappier than it used to be too.  I'm kind of surprised that it isn't as fast as DingooSNES by now though, for as long as it's been worked on.  But that's just IMO.

Full Compatibility mode: DingooSNES, slower version.  It can even run Kirby's Super Star, extremely slow but it can be run.  The only things that can't be run that are of note technically (in theory, that I've noticed) are Star Ocean and the Secret of Mana games.

Snes9x4d is for Dinguix, so I haven't personally tried it yet.  From what I hear, it's slightly worse than DingooSNES in some areas, better in others.  They're both based on the same emulator so they're somewhat similar though.

@lion lol, realistically I'm the only one out of two people in the thread who's mentioned native sim files.

It depend on the game...

Some games will run slower and not at full speed even when at 400Mhz+

Some games run fast when Transparency is off but the games need it... try playing Zelda with it off ;)

Also not every Dingoo can Overclock to over 400Mhz.

I had 3 Dingoos and one would crash after 400Mhz, another could go upto 420Mhz and the other to 430Mhz.

Don't be silly, the more the merrier. I couldn't speak about your alternative as frankly I just didn't have the time to even try it. Not that I'm not bothered about trying PocketSNES, but playing time as been very sparse in my agenda lately! If I do get the chance, I'll definitely try it though.

*EDIT* BTW, one of the reason I stick to Snes9x4d is not for the special chips support, but because of cheats support! I don't have much time to play, so when I do, I want to chill out! Any chance to add cheats support to DingooSNES?

For me, dingoo snes is the best snes emulator for dingoo.

Faster, very good sound  and nice screen filtering.

Hi, could someone please upload DingooSNES v1.1 somewhere? Accidently deleted it.  :'(
The authors download is gone an v1.2 is pretty useless cause of screen flickering.

Late thanks to Madmatt for the upload!
Since Lion is still improving his DingooSNES i've just made the jump to v1.3fast and its REALLY IMPRESSING  :o!
No chance for PocketSNES or 4D, speedwise at least.
Hey Lion: Please keep up the good work!  ;)
Is there any chance for high-res support in the future? No SoM or SD3 makes me a little sad...

I have also tried several and currently prefer DingooSNES 1.3 fast. I like the interface, and it plays all the games that I care about very nicely. I'm not crazy about Dingux and prefer the simplicity of Native emulators where possible.

I have to agree with Raygan, DingooSNES is th best SNES i'v seen on any open-sourced handheld without having to install any extra craziness like dingux. And to Lion_srm, Keep up the great work! We really appreciate everything you do. :)
