Lowest under clock speed for Dingoo A320?
« on: November 26, 2010, 10:52:33 pm »
What is the slowest clock speed anyone has managed to get their Dingoo to run at?

The reason I ask is that I've just added clock speed changing to Oh Boy http://code.google.com/p/ohboy/source/detail?r=169f76f83bf1e9e9d2ab509439e437bd27163edd

I've not really been able to clock below 200 Mhz on my ("fake") Dingoo. The machine locks up on me at 150Mhz.

Under clocking for (some) Game Boy games seems to work really well, PD game Adjustris at 200Mhz runs fine. Tetris needs 300Mhz (still lowed than the default speed). Still hopefully enough to keep the Dingoo cooler and use less power.

On the other extreme, the title sequence in the PD game Binary Chaos runs full speed at 400Mhz (the game itself is fine at a lower clock speed). I've not tried to go above 400Mhz though :)

Any experiences anyone else can share on this topic?

Chris

Dingux can go as low as 100MHz without issues.
Anything below 80MHz and the screen starts to flicker, but to about 70MHz you still can use your dingoo. On even lower clocks you lose the telnet connection and can't test anymore.

From my testing I can Overclock to 472Mhz and underclock to 68 Mhz without problems, Anything beyong that gives me some segmentation faults running anything.

I'm running at 35MHz without problems.

Wow! I'm surprised people are able to go so low. I ended up restricting Oh Boy to go as low as 200 and as high as 400 Mhz. I think those are ranges that are reasonable to expect reliable performance and behavior from the CPU.

Thanks for the replies,

Chris

The A330 (A320 clone as opposed to the new arm based one) can clock a little bit higher than the A320, not sure how low it can go though.

I have an original, white, 4 GB, Dingoo Digital A320 from China (S.N. A320WH0160373)
with native firmware Version 1.20

I was unable, after many tries, to upgrade to the official 1.22, 1.30 or to other
firmwares with the "DOWN button pressed while starting-up" method, haven't tried the
USB method though as I'm not on Windows but Linux Ubuntu (and I'm fine with 1.20).
Maybe I'll try another time, so I could boot Dingux, but so far programming for the
native Dingoo's OS looks more like I would rather do. I have a number of software
and hardware-hack projects in the back of my head since I got my Dingoo in Dec. 2010.

The "secret message" of my LCD-test-screen is:
Vendor ID: 0x 1be1369.
SDRAM ????!
LCD MODULE: LCM_MODULE_ILI9325
LOADER SUM: 0x  90614d.
OS SUM:     0x a2d83c8.
OS?汾: Sep 25 2009 09:26:15
??ص?ѹ:  265078.

With the nice and well done CPU-and-Memory-clocks-overclocker APP, I could overclock
safely at 440 MHz (CPU) / 146 MHz (Memory), but 448 and above freezes the A320.
Underclocking, on the the other hand, freezes with this APP with anything bellow 335.
With another dedicated 200 MHz (CPU) APP (wihout any display), I can change the clocks
and now the first APP shows 198 MHz (CPU) / 66 MHz (Memory), and everything works fine
but slow (I use that to slow down fighting games when bosses are too fast for me ;-)
and to save some power while using my A320 as an e-book reader).
I have seen the A320 underclocking-itself without any warning for the user when the
battery power is low.

Also I'll post here a little info about CPU and Memory clocks frequencies:
I found that their values (I think there are dedicated registers for them) are reseted
to default whe quitting an APP (or a SIM) unless: - I am pressing a button constantly
while quitting and navigating the menus (I use the Y button for that because it doesn't
disturb navigation), OR - I am not running on the battery but from USB +5 V power.

P.S. I'd like to say I'm very thankful for the whole effort of the Dingoo community and
I'm a little bit sorry of Dingoo Digital's fate ... long live homebrew and retro games !

Be careful. I have HTC Herald for 4 years, it was running 100-300 mhz while the stock is 200mhz, and now there is peep from the screen on the stock 200mhz and i have to run it on 216mhz. Same with dingoo, i've already got peep from the screen, but it's almost silent.
