Title: Anyone want to help me beta test Chip World?
Post by: Harteex on April 26, 2010, 08:54:08 pm
The release of Chip World is getting closer, but I still haven't played through all the levels.
And there might also be other problems I haven't noticed.

So if anyone wants to help me to test it, please post here or PM me and I'll send you the game.
If you have played Chip's Challenge before, that's great.

What I'm interested in is mostly gameplay problems. Some other things are not even done yet, like some of the sounds and the music. So this is if you want to help, if you just want to play the game, I suggest you wait for the real release.

I have enough free time and patience to be a beta-tester.

I'd love to since me and my wife loved to play the original game.

By the way, is the game being made with the dingoo_sdk?

Congrats on the project.

Yep it's made with the dingoo_sdk, if you refer to our multiplatform SDK (http://code.google.com/p/dingoo-sdk/).

I'm just about to head out, but I'll send a PM later.

Great! I'm studying the code and making some little demos with the SDK and it's working great.
Keep up the excellent work you guys are doing in it.

Since I'm a developer eager to learn about dingoo programming do you think you can send me the source code of the game (or part of it) so I can learn how you did it?

Thanks a lot and have a nice day.

Thanks

It will be open source when I release it, which will probably be this week.
Although some parts of the source are a bit of a mess.. :P

For now, AstroLander by Flatmush is a good example on how to make a game (with timing / locked fps and so on). You'll find that in the samples folder of the SDK.

Sorry for taking so long to play the game and post any feedback. I've been busy studying a lot besides work.
I've been playing for an hour and all is fine with the game. I must say that it's very professional and
you did a perfect job porting the levels. No bug detected but I'll play more.

One question: when using the dingoo-sdk, is it possible to test the game on the PC instead of compiling and
moving the app file to dingoo everytime?

Excellent game! Keep up the good work.

[EDIT] An option to Restart Level during game would be great because there was a few times that I've got stuck or just knew I couldn't go further. :)

just press X to restart the level. ;)

Regarding dingoo_sdk:
For now you have to move the app to the dingoo every time to test.

Regarding Chip World:
I did find some bugs myself on some levels around 40 so I'll have to fix them first...

No problem. You guys are doing a fine job on it.

New to this but curious, you've got Chips Challenge to run on the Dingoo? I thought that was an old Windows 3.0 game last I remembered it. Then again I'm not quite sure I get what SDK is either but still very curious.

Nah, he's making an open source clone of Chips Challenge, called Chip World. SDK = Software Development Kit, it's a kit you use to develop software with, in this case for Dingoo native ;)

Hey thats neat reminds me of a Linux based version of Fallout, I think you played as like a cyborg Tux kicking ass and chewing bubble gum sort of adventure. That sheds some light on the subject for me thx btw for that. So when you use this Software Development Kit to make a game does he have to start from scratch or is it possible to make use of the original games data to sort of "lead" you more or less to reconstitute it via different software manipulation? I'm thinking a sort of "connect the dots" concept. Enlighten me. ^_^

This depends. If the original project is open source, you can reuse code. If not, you can't. In this case, as far as I know, Chip's Challenge's source is not available, so I'd put my money on that Harteex has written it from scratch.

Yes it's written from scratch. I found a reference on the level file (chips.dat) so I wrote a loader to load the levels from that.

I'm using a level editor to change the levels in Chip's Challenge to test different situations and then I try to make my game behave in the same way. By observing bugs from Chip's Challenge (there are quite a few) I can also in some cases get a feeling for about how the implementation of the original was made.

Anyway I've found a few new bugs to fix, so it's delayed a few days...

New version at the same location, feel free to give a quick test.
Apart from bug fixes I added a skip level functionality, so that you can skip up to 5 levels.

This version can be considered RC, and the final release will most likely be tomorrow.
